Missing Person Police Looking for Man Connected to a 1980 Missing Girl

HAYMARKET, Va. (WUSA) — Prince William County Police want to know if you have any information about the homicide of Cynthia Joan Gastelle. DNA samples recently helped identify skeletal remains found in 1982 as belonging to Gastelle.

Her brother and police made a plea for information on Wednesday afternoon during a press conference. Police also released the photo of a man who they want to talk to about the case. We have posted the photo of him that 9News Now’s Peggy Fox tweeted on Wednesday so that if you know him, you can notify police. Peggy will have more on this story Wednesday evening.

Eighteen-year-old Gastelle was reported missing to the Takoma Park Police on April 3, 1980.

Almost two years later, on February 12, 1982, Prince William County Police found skeletal remains on Bull Run Mountain near Mountain Road in the Haymarket area. In 2001, DNA from the case was entered into the national database. That same year, DNA from her family members was collected in an unrelated case in another jurisdiction. Then, on May 10 of this year, Prince William County Police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Virginia, was notified of a DNA match from that DNA to the skeletal remains found in 1982.

The Prince William County Police are investigating the case as a homicide. If you have any information relating to this case, please call Crime Solvers at 703-670-3700 or 1-866-411-TIPS.
