Arson Investigation Possible Meth Lab Fire in Nicholasville

Nicholasville police continue to investigate after firefighters found equipment and ingredients associated with making meth at a fire scene Thursday.

The fire broke out inside a home along Mill Street around 5:30 p.m. Police say one person was inside at the time and made it out uninjured. Firefighters had to stretch nearly 1,000 feet of hose to reach the blaze.

Investigators say after the fire was out, firefighters found ingredients and equipment used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

Police say it’s too early to tell whether there was an active meth lab in the home, or if that was the cause of the fire.

Police say the man who was in the home was decontaminated by the fire department and taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Police say they have not filed any charges at this time, but continue to investigate.

Wrongful Death Johnson County Man Indicted in Parents Murder

A Johnson County man has been formally indicted in the murder of his parents.

Willie Blanton is charged in the death of Larry and Sandy Blanton, whose bodies were discovered back in February after being reported missing in September.

The Johnson County coroner tells LEX 18 that the couple found buried on their farm in late February died from “blunt force trauma.”

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The discovery of Larry and Sandy Blanton’s bodies ended a five-month long search for the two, who were reported missing in September 2012.

Blanton’s girlfriend, Amanda Fannin, eventually signed a plea agreement, meaning she cannot be charged and that, if found guilty, Willie Blanton cannot be sentenced to death.

Identity Theft Pizza Boxes Lead Auburn, NY Detectives to Suspect

The discovery of several uneaten pizzas and empty boxes in a hotel room helped lead detectives to a man accused of using phony credit card information to feed himself and stay at hotels in Auburn for free, authorities said.

Eric W. Hall, 28, a transient, was charged with two counts of felony second-degree identity theft, one count of third-degree identity theft, four counts of theft of services, one count of criminally possessing a hypodermic needle, and one count of petty larceny.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Auburn police first began investigating a string of identity theft cases at Auburn area hotels and pizzerias in early March.

Authorities said Hall stayed at hotels by giving what appeared to be valid credit card numbers to make the reservation and complete the stay. While staying at a hotel, he would order food — often pizza — and have it delivered to his room using the same credit card information. He would then ask for cash back while tipping the delivery drivers, and keep the extra money, police said.

But the credit card numbers belonged to people across the United States — one person lived as far away as Hawaii — and none of them had any connection to Auburn.

Each time the hotels and businesses fully processed the transactions later, they learned the credit card information given was stolen or reported as compromised. By the time the hotels realized what had happened, Hall was gone, police said.

A break in the case came when an officer checking a hotel for Hall on an unrelated warrant discovered several uneaten pizzas and pizza boxes in a room Hall was believed to be staying in. The officer alerted detectives and shared Hall’s name. Further investigation linked Hall to the identity theft cases, police said.

On March 30, police found Hall staying in a room at a Holiday Inn on North Street in Auburn. Police said he was charged in connection to the identity theft cases, the unrelated warrant and a a hypodermic needle found in his possession when he was arrested.

Police are reminding businesses to verify and match the identification of anyone using a credit card with the credit card information provided.

Missing Person William McCune of Carson City, Nevada

The sheriff’s office is seeking the public’s help to locate a missing and possibly endangered Carson City man today.

Foul play is suspected in the case of the missing William McCune, 62. McCune is employed with the state and has been listed as missing and endangered person. He is described as being 5 feet, 9 inches tall, bald, with blue eyes. Coworkers called the sheriff’s office to perform a welfare check today after he failed to board a plane for a business trip with a coworker, according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The man was a no-show at his work Wednesday morning and coworkers came to his apartment, knocked, and received no reply, although his car was parked in front of the Villas of Dolphin Bay Apartments in the 700 block of Silver Oak Drive.

When his coworker called their boss Thursday morning to report the man was not on the flight, other coworkers again came to his apartment. This time, his vehicle was gone and they called the police. The first vehicle was later found at an adjacent apartment complex.

The first deputy on scene found obvious and severe signs of a struggle inside the apartment and called for detectives, according to Furlong.

The sheriff’s office found signs of a physical altercation inside the apartment. Assistant District Attorney Mark Krueger was called and search warrant for the man’s apartment were being requested Thursday afternoon.

“We’re treating it as foul play,” Captain Ken Sandage said. “The sheriff’s office is taking every precaution and will collect biological evidence, including blood, that would be otherwise lost in its current form.”

McCune’s second vehicle, a 2000 maroon Dodge Dakota Pickup with tinted windows and license plate 769XTL, has not been found yet.

The sheriff has requested anyone with information or anyone who has seen the pickup either call the investigation division at 283-7851 or the communications center at 887-2013.

Pedophile Tracking Toney, AL Man Gets 40 Years

A Toney man was sentenced today to 40 years in prison after his conviction in October 2012 on child sexual abuse charges.

Tommy Dee Mason, 45, will have to serve the full 40 years in prison based on Alabama’s child sex abuse law.

Mason was convicted on four counts of sexual abuse of a child under 12. The victims in the case were the daughters of a close family friend of Mason and his family, according to trial testimony.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Mason was arrested in May 2009 after the girls spoke to their mother and later investigators about the incidents.

Madison County Circuit Judge Donna Pate sentenced Mason to 20 years per each of the four counts and ordered the sentences related to each victim to run concurrently – at the same time. But she ordered the 20-year sentences to run consecutively, for a total of 40 years in prison.

Mason’s attorney Bruce Gardner did not ask for a particular sentence, but did ask the court to show mercy to Mason. Mason denied the allegations during the trial.

Madison County Assistant District Attorney said Mason expressed regret that he put everyone through a trial, he disagreed with the jury’s verdict but respected the judge’s orders.

Gann said Mason’s punishment is appropriate.

“Judge Pate sent a message with that sentence,” Gann said. “It was a very strong sentence, but it was well deserved. He really did some evil to those girls and now he’s getting exactly what he deserves.”

Arson Investigation Mother and Daughter Critically Injured, Son Charged

A man has been arrested for attempted murder and suspicion of arson in connection with a house fire that left a mother and daughter critically injured early Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to a home on Featherhill Lane in Mira Mesa at 1:36 a.m. where they found a fire had broken out in an upstairs television room.

“As our crews entered, they encountered a lot of heat and some fire on the second floor,” said Maurice Luque, spokesperson for San Diego Fire Rescue Department.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

“A lot of the blinds and other items were melted from the heat but there wasn’t a lot of fire damage on the second story,” Luque added.

Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters found a man on the curb who told them there were two people still inside the home. The man had a slight injury to his foot, Luque said. San Diego police officers questioned the man about the fire.

Inside the home, crews found two women – a mother in her 60s and her daughter in her 40s – unresponsive in an upstairs bathroom. Crews performed CPR on the women at the scene.

Both victims were transported to local hospitals with critical injuries.

Officials say the victims are currently on life support. The daughter is not expected to survive her injuries sustained in the fire, officials said.

According to detectives, the house fire appeared suspicious in nature. The arson team was called to investigate the home and determined arson was likely the cause of the fire, officials said.

The home is now considered a crime scene.

The victim’s son, Thongsavath Sphabmixay, was detained by police on suspicion of arson and attempted murder. It is unclear if the son is the same man that firefighters found on the curb upon arrival at the home.

Officials say a witness saw the son leave the home shortly after the fire started. He returned to the house shortly thereafter.

“Some witness indication that he was there, left after the fire and then returned later,” said Lt. Jorge Duran with San Diego police. “We want to talk with him about why he left, where he went, what happened right before the fire started — those types of questions.”

A neighbor told NBC 7 a woman named Pamela Sphabmixay lives at the home on Featherhill Lane, though it is unclear if she was one of the victims critically injured in the fire.
