Wrongful Death Murder-Suicide in Casey County

State Police say a Casey County man killed his girlfriend and then took his own life. It happened Friday night at the home of a friend of the woman killed. That woman spoke out about what happened to LEX 18.

It was in Gravel Switch where a tumultuous relationship came to a tragic end. “He was pretty violent with her, a lot. I think she always feared that this would happen,” says Dianne Reynolds, the neighbor of the victims.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Police say 61-year-old George Merrick killed his longtime girlfriend, 52-year-old Judith Duncil.

This had been going on for quite a few years and she was staying with me, I was just trying to help her out,” says Reynolds.

Reynolds was a friend of Duncil’s. “She was a really kind-hearted person she was always helping everybody,” she remembers.

The shooting happened at Reynold’s Little South Road home in Gravel Switch, where Duncil had been staying the past couple of weeks.

Reynolds says she heard Merrick arrive at her house late Friday night, driving up onto her walkway and her lawn, getting out and then getting into a verbal argument with Duncil. Reynolds says she heard the two yelling and then suddenly it stopped. “She was screaming and then I heard two shots and I peaked out the window and he had shot her,” remembers Reynolds. “I locked the door and called 911. I didn’t hear what went on after that.”

Merrick, Police say, had then turned the gun on himself. Reynolds hopes her friend is remembered for her kindness. “She had an uplifting spirit and she never had anything negative to say about anyone. She was very intelligent, but she could relate to anyone,” says Reynolds.

State Police are still investigating the shooting.

The Danville Fire Department responded to a home at 25 Oakland Avenue just after midnight Friday. The house was determined to be abandoned.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

At 8:32 p.m. firefighters returned to the scene to find the house on fire again.

Due to the extensive damage from the first incident, DFD personnel did not enter the structure.

Heat from the fire caused minor damage to a house next door. No one was hurt.

The DFD Fire Marshal’s Office ruled both fires an arson. There have been no arrests at this time but the investigation continues.

Fraud Investigation Virginia Beach Psychology Center Office Manager

A former office manager for a Virginia Beach psychology center has been arrested and charged with defrauding the practice out of more than $300,000.

Catherine Williams, formerly known as Catherine Rittenhouse, 53, made an initial appearance Friday afternoon in U.S. District Court after her arrest in Georgia earlier this month. She now lives in Ludowici, Ga., near Savannah.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

She faces five counts: conspiracy, health care fraud, aggravated identity theft, embezzlement and forgery. She pleaded not guilty to the charges, and a judge set a May 7 trial date.

An associate of Williams, Michael Inman Sr., faces the same charges. He also was recently arrested in Georgia and is awaiting transfer here.

From 2008 to February, Williams worked at Spectrum Psychological Services, making $10 an hour as an office manager, according to an indictment filed Feb. 21.

The indictment alleges that Williams stole health insurance checks meant for the practice and then gave them to Inman. It alleges that Inman then forged the checks, deposited them into a bank account and split the proceeds with Williams.

The indictment says 596 checks were stolen and that the practice lost $308,000.

Williams remains free on a $25,000 bond.

Missing Person Fox Executive Believed to be Killed

After months of speculation, Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators confirmed Thursday they believed missing Fox movie executive Gavin Smith was killed and publicly named a convicted drug dealer as a person of interest in the case.

The revelation came as investigators announced that the 57-year-old’s Mercedes-Benz, missing since his May disappearance, was found last month in a Simi Valley storage locker. Authorities said the storage locker was linked to James Creech, now serving an eight-year sentence for an unrelated drug conviction.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“The condition of the vehicle in conjunction with cooperating witness statements indicates he was killed,” sheriff’s Lt. Dave Dolson said. “At this time the evidence leads us to believe he was murdered.”

Investigators have “a good idea” of a motive, Dolson said, “but we’re not going to discuss it.”

The relationship between Smith and Creech was unclear — Creech told a Times reporter at his sentencing last year that he had never met Smith.

But Dolson said “there was a relationship” between Smith and Creech’s wife, who “met in rehab.” When asked whether that relationship was romantic in nature, Dolson declined to comment.

“They knew each other,” he said.

Chandrika Creech has spoken to investigators on many occasions, Dolson said. He declined to say what information she provided.

In the months after Smith was last seen, officials insisted the case remained a missing persons investigation, even as Creech’s home and vehicle were searched.

Smith, a former UCLA basketball player who worked in Fox’s movie distribution department, was last seen leaving a friend’s home in Ventura County’s Oak Park neighborhood the night of May 1. Wearing purple athletic pants belonging to one of his sons, Smith drove away in his Mercedes, leaving behind his cellphone charger, shaving kit and other items.

Numerous searches of the area were conducted after Smith disappeared, and his family posted a $20,000 reward.

Dolson said investigators received a tip leading them to the storage facility where Smith’s car was recovered. The locker wasn’t registered to Creech, Dolson said, but to someone close to him.

John Creech has not spoken to detectives while serving time at Men’s Central Jail for the drug conviction, Dolson said. Creech was picked up by Glendale police in a February 2010 drug bust, when he sold bricks of cocaine to a man whose car contained more than 2,500 oxycodone tablets. Subsequent searches of Creech’s home and business yielded drugs and cash.

Creech later admitted to police that he was a middle man between drug producers and lower-level street dealers, and pleaded no contest last year to one count of selling and transporting cocaine.

In January, his Hummer was found at a marijuana grow house in Granada Hills. Authorities searched the vehicle in connection with the Smith case, one of more than two dozen search warrants served in the investigation. Creech’s West Hills home was also searched at least twice.

Dolson said officials do not think that Smith was involved in any drug transactions.

Investigators believe Smith had already been killed by the time his Mercedes-Benz was moved from Porter Ranch to the storage facility about a week after his disappearance, but have not said why the car was in Porter Ranch.

Detectives are also trying to piece together how it got to the storage locker, and have asked the public for help in identifying anyone who might have been involved.

Smith’s wife, Lisa, told The Times she and her three sons were “devastated” by news that detectives believe her husband was killed, but it confirmed their worst suspicions.

“Truly, truly this is what my sons and I thought happened all along,” she said in a tearful phone call. “For the rest of the world to know that he didn’t leave us is huge. He would have never done that. We knew from the get-go that something horrible had happened because he just wouldn’t do this.”

Lisa Smith said she’s hopeful that detectives will find out “exactly what happened” to her husband and “bring it to justice.”

“I can’t believe they got this huge piece of evidence and I am so thrilled,” she said. “We were just waiting and now we are so much closer to closure.”

Identity Theft Skimmer Found on Access Door of a Union City, CA Bank

A man uncovered an identity theft scam at a Union City bank as he was trying to use the access door to get to an ATM.

Police said the scam happened at a Union City Citibank, but what’s unique in this case is that the card scammer targeted people before they even entered the door.

The ATMs are on the inside of a Citibank on Decoto Road in Union City, but customers needing access to their money after the bank is closed need to slide their ATM card into a machine to open the door.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Last Sunday morning, a man who talked to KTVU and asked not to be identified, noticed something unusual.

“When I pulled the card off, this whole device fell off in my hand,” he said.

The man discovered a realistic copy of a card reader attached to the face of the original, except the phony card reader has two blue bars.

He said the thieves were smart to avoid the actual ATMs where people are more aware of their surroundings.

“That is an extremely smart move,” he said. “As you said people are not going to be thinking about that; they just think that’s a way to unlock the door.”

Union City police said this is the first time they’ve ever seen a skimmer device on an access door.

They said the scam is more common at gas station pumps and victims can end up with a cleaned out bank account.

Police are checking if any account information was collected on the memory cards.

One customer was upset that she learned of the attempted identity theft from KTVU.

“Citibank never told me that there was a scam going on,” said Karen Merchant of Union City. “I was never told.”

The bank manager told KTVU they were waiting on police to let them know if there was any information on the skimmer before notifying customers.
