Arson Investigation Sparta House Fire Probed as Arson

A fire deemed ‘suspicious’ by Sparta police has been ruled an arson, according to a report on NJ.com.

A Fox Trail Road home was gutted Thursday night by the quick-moving fire, and resident Lindsay Kiensicki, 26, suffered burns to her head, face and arms, Sgt. John-Paul Beebe had said. Homeowners Robert and Lois Kiensicki were not home at the time of the blaze, Beebe said.

Investigators initially deemed the fire suspicious, and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating it as a case of arson, NJ.com reported.

“There’s no cause for public alarm,” First Assistant Prosecutor Greg Mueller said.

Kiensicki remains in critical condition at St. Barnabas Medical Center.

Missing Person 3 Missing CO Woman Have Online Modeling Profiles

Three young women who disappeared in Colorado reportedly all had profiles on modeling social networking sites.

According to Fox 31, The National Women’s Coalition Against Violence & Exploitation says Kara Nichols and Raven Furlong both had profiles on ModelMayhem.com. The group says the site is a common link in several cases of missing girls.

“We’re up to 13 or 14 cases that we’re familiar with,” the organization’s co-founder, Michelle Bart, told Fox 31.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Nichols, 19, of Colorado Springs, has been missing since Oct. 9, 2012. She told her friends she was going to Denver for a modeling job and disappeared, KRDO Newschannel 13 reports. Furlong, 17, has been missing from Aurora since Feb. 5. Police consider her a runaway, according to KRDO.

A third missing woman, Kelsie Schelling, appears to have a modeling profile on the site Explore Talent. Schelling was last seen on Feb. 4. Her empty car was discovered in Pueblo.

Furlong’s aunt discovered her Model Mayhem profile after she vanished and saw some disturbing correspondence.

“The photographers asking her to do nude photographs after asking her if she was 18 and her telling them no,” Buckley told Fox 31.

According to the station, Furlong called her family last month, but her mother says the call wasn’t normal.

“She said she had to go because it’s not her phone and they need their phone back,” said Lin Furlong.

Professional model Jillian Mourning, 25, says she learned firsthand the dangers of modeling websites when she was 19. She tells KRDO that she connected with a “manager” on Model Mayhem and was sexually assaulted during a shoot in Arizona.

“He came into my room with three guys, and they [all] proceeded to rape me,” recalled Mourning. “They took pictures of it, and would even show me pictures of things that I was doing, and videotaped the whole thing.”

She says at 19 years old, she felt trapped. She said she was trafficked and forced to have sex with men for six months until her manager went to prison for an unrelated crime.

The owner of Model Mayhem, Internet Brands, said in an emailed statement to KRDO that it cooperates with all law enforcement investigations involving people on the site.

“Model Mayhem strongly believes that safety should be top of mind when doing anything online. Because there are scams on the Internet, Model Mayhem tries to educate users about scams and how to avoid them. The site offers detailed safety advice to help members understand what to look for when they are contacted by others. This can be found here,” said public relations manager Joe Ewaskiw. “The site also has a feedback mechanism called “Contact a Moderator” that allows any member to let site moderators know of any suspicious activity they encounter. Moderators view and respond to each and every inquiry.”

Police have not officially linked Model Mayhem to the girls’ disappearances, but the company does have an “F” rating with the Better Business Bureau, according to Fox 31.

Identity Theft South Florida Leads Nation

Florida lived up to its worst stereotype last year, leading the nation in complaints about fraud and identity theft.

In 2012, the number of consumer complaints received by the Federal Trade Commission topped 2 million for the first time, up from 1.8 million in 2011. Of those, 369,132 – 18 percent – were related to identity theft, a 3 percent increase from a year ago, the agency said Tuesday.

Identity theft tops the complaint list for the 13th consecutive year. Debt collection complaints came in second with 199,721, or 10 percent.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Florida is the state with the highest per capita rate of reported fraud and other complaints with 133,973, or 693.5 per 100,000 population. Nationwide, consumers reported paying more than $1.4 billion in those fraud complaints. The median amount paid to fraudsters was $535 nationally.

The Sunshine State is also first in identity theft complaints, with 69,795, or 361.3 per 100,000 population.

Among metropolitan areas, Palm Beach County, Broward County and Miami-Dade County combined rank first in the nation in identity theft-related complaints. With 35,914 ID theft complaints from South Floridians in 2012, that’s 645.4 per 100,000 people.

Michael Galvin, spokesman for the West Palm Beach-based Better Business Bureau of Southeast Florida and the Caribbean, said the numbers do not surprise him. The BBB is one of the organizations which contributes data to the FTC’s annual report.

“The demographics lead the charge. Due to the age of the population, people are more vulnerable,” Galvin said.

“People who were dealing in drugs and weapons are now dealing on the Internet and doing identity theft because it is easier. If they get caught, the time is not as much as it is dealing with drugs. These are syndicates, gangs that are well-organized,” Galvin said.

People need to be vigilant about who they give personal information to, especially on the Internet, Galvin said.

“People are entering personal information and don’t think twice about it. Everybody has to be prepared to make changes. Corporations on the Internet are asking for information that is vulnerable,” Galvin said.

Insurance Fraud Charles County, MD Woman Charged

Police have charged three Charles County women for intentionally setting a car on fire because the owner couldn’t afford the monthly payments.

Police say Nichelle C. Underwood, her sister Tanya R. Mathis, and Angela Y. Hemsley destroyed a 2007 Chevrolet Corvette purchased by Underwood in August. Underwood got her sister involved when she was unable to make the $1,300 monthly payments on the $77,000 car. Hemsley eventually agreed to burn the vehicle for $500.

The Corvette was found completely destroyed near Friendship Landing Park on the morning of Dec. 9.

Mathis and Hemsley have been charged with arson and conspiracy. Underwood faces conspiracy and malicious and fraud charges.

“When someone commits arson and vehicle insurance fraud, they are stealing directly from the pockets of hard-working, honest Marylanders,” Maryland State Fire Marshal William Barnard says in a release.

If convicted, all three could spend anywhere from five to 20 years behind bars and/or fines of up to $30,000.

Pedophile Tracking Ex-LDS Official Sentenced

A former employee of the Mormon church has been sentenced to two years in the Davis County Jail for sexual offenses involving two children.

Timothy Bothell of Centerville drew the sentence Friday in 2nd District Court after earlier pleading guilty to one felony count of attempted aggravated sexual abuse of a child and one misdemeanor count of lewdness involving a child.

Ogden’s Standard-Examiner reports (http://bit.ly/VnIoOu ) the plea was part of a deal so the sisters, ages 11 and 13 at the time of the abuse, would not have to testify.

The 43-year-old Bothell was terminated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ missionary department when charges were filed in August and was relieved of his position in a Centerville LDS church stake high council after his arrest.

Identity Theft Forsyth County, GA Man Arrested

A man was arrested this week in connection with multiple crimes involving fraud and identity theft, authorities said.

David Lamar Beck, 51, of Sardis Road in nearby Gainesville, was arrested Wednesday following an investigation stemming from a January purchase of a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a local business. Beck is suspected of purchasing the vehicle with a counterfeit check.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

As investigators went deeper into the case they gathered enough information to secure a search warrant of Beck’s residence.

Upon the search on Jan. 16, investigators discovered copies of fraudulent Georgia and North Carolina driver’s licenses, numerous stolen checks and mail items, as well as a laptop computer connected to a burglary in White County, Ga. Investigators totaled 16 individual and three business victims involved in Beck’s alleged crimes.

The suspect was turned over to Hall County authorities after being held at the Forsyth County Detention Center on similar charges. He was booked into the Hall County Jail and charged with forgery in the first and second degree, two counts of forgery in the third degree, nine counts of fraud and identity theft, theft by taking, and 16 counts of theft by receiving.

Beck is being held on a $161,000 bond and was expected to appear before a judge this afternoon. His arraignment is scheduled for March 15.

The case remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigations Division.
