Fraud Investigation Barren County Financial Adviser Sentenced

LOUISVILLE—A Barren County, Kentucky financial adviser was sentenced in U.S. District Court by Chief Judge Joseph H. McKinley, Jr. on December 14, 2012, to six years in federal prison and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $2,278,692.81 to 14 victims, announced David J. Hale, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky. Jonathan Neal Leber, 36, of Glasgow, Kentucky, plead guilty on September 4, 2012, to charges of defrauding clients residing in Kentucky and southern Indiana, of approximately $2.3 million.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

“These are serious crimes. For many of the victims, the money stolen represented nearly all of their life savings,” stated U.S. Attorney David J. Hale. “Investigating and prosecuting those who defraud investors is a priority of the Department of Justice and my office. We are grateful for the outstanding work done by the FBI and Kentucky State Police, which helped to stop these crimes and bring Leber to justice.” Leber was charged in a one count federal indictment on June 13, 2012, with devising a scheme to defraud and to obtain money and property by means of false and fraudulent pretenses, representations, and promises from individuals who were clients of the defendant’s financial advisement business, Intrepid Financial Strategies Inc.

According to the indictment, between August 1, 2007 and January 14, 2011, Leber would promise to invest clients’ money in bonds and tax lien certificates paying returns between four percent and six percent; reinvest clients IRA accounts in to qualified “rollover” investment accounts paying higher rates of return and would not result in fees or cause tax liabilities; and invest client money in stocks, bonds, annuities, and a Styrofoam recycling business. The indictment states that Leber never intended to make the investments that were represented to the clients and instead intended to and did expend these monies for his personal benefit and gain and for the benefit and gain of a personal business venture—Cedar Ridge Shooting Ride Academy LLC—that Leber formed, owned, and operated.

Leber was previously indicted in Bullitt Circuit Court on three felony counts of forgery and received a probated sentence after entering a guilty plea on all counts. He was sentenced in Jefferson Circuit Court in June 2012 to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud charges and is currently serving this sentence in Kentucky state prison.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jim Lesousky and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Kentucky State Police.

Pedophile Tracking Maine Felon Transported Owensboro Girl for Sex

OWENSBORO, KY—Archie M. Whalen, from Hancock County, Maine, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison today by Chief District Judge Joseph H. McKinley, Jr. for transporting a minor across state lines with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, announced David J. Hale, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.

A federal jury in Owensboro, Kentucky deliberated approximately one hour on July 26, 2012, before finding Whalen, age 46, guilty of all charges.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

According to testimony presented during the three-day trial, Whalen took a 13-year-old Owensboro girl from her home on September 26, 2009. A multi-state Amber Alert was issued and within 24 hours, and the minor girl was found with Whalen in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, on September 27, 2009.

Whalen was arrested after a Sturgeon Bay Police officer observed the Maine license plate on the vehicle Whalen was driving and conducted a felony traffic stop. The Sturgeon Bay Police acted after being notified by the FBI in Kentucky to be on the lookout for Whalen’s red Ford Explorer with a Maine license plate. According to the minor girl’s mother, a text message on their shared cell phone helped police identify Whalen. The minor girl and her mother had met Whalen while they briefly lived in Maine earlier that month. After the Amber Alert was issued, employees at a McDonald’s in Breckenridge County alerted their local Sheriff’s office that they believed Whalen and the victim had been in the restaurant around 5:30 a.m. Surveillance video obtained by the Breckenridge County Sheriff’s Office and provided to Daviess County authorities was used to confirm Whalen’s identity and that the missing minor was with him. When Whalen’s Maine plate was run by a police officer in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, although no traffic stop was done, law enforcement authorities in Kentucky were able to confirm that Whalen was in Wisconsin and likely headed in the direction of Sturgeon Bay, where one of Whalen’s family members lived.

Whalen has a prior state felony conviction for second-degree assault in New York and a prior federal conviction for unlawful possession of a firearm in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marisa J. Ford, and it was investigated by the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Owensboro Resident Agency, with invaluable assistance and cooperation from the Sturgeon Bay Police Department in Wisconsin; the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department in Maine; the Evidence Response Team in the FBI’s Milwaukee Division; and the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney in Daviess County, Kentucky.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and to identify and rescue victims. Private Detective Jewelery Store Thief in Woodford County

The owner of a jewelery store in Woodford County decided to take matters into her own hands after she noticed more than one hundred thousand dollars in antique stones and gold missing. Her bravery may have stopped the thief from breaking in, but the investigation isn’t over.

Helen Ringus, owner of EquiTreasures in Midway, takes great pride in the jewelry she makes. So when she noticed someone was stealing from her, Helen wasn’t going to stand by and let it happen without putting up a fight.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

“I decided to sleep on the floor, lights out, all the curtains drawn, and see what happens,” she said.

That was Sunday night. A few days after the jewelry maker noticed stones and gold were missing from trays under the display cases. Helen says more than 100,000 dollars worth of precious gems and metal is gone. Then she discovered someone had pried open the back window.

“I knew who he was, and I know that he’s a wimp, and I didn’t think he was armed,” she said.

That’s why Helen decided to take her chances, and confront the thief if he broke in again. Sure enough, it happened early Monday morning.

“Of course I started screaming and he kept approaching me saying, give me five minutes to explain before you call police, and I said don’t come near me! I think I said that twice. When I could reach him, I clobbered him with my stick.”

The thief got away. Versailles Police are investigating, but at this point, that’s all they’ll say.

As for Helen, she may be small, but she’s not one to mess with, and she says she’d do it again, to protect her jewels.

“I took a chance but this is my life. This is my money. I work hard for this. He doesn’t have a job. He doesn’t work. He steals from people. He deserves to be punished.”

Helen says even though she recognizes the thief she doesn’t want to jeopardize the investigation by naming him. Meanwhile, police won’t say if they’re looking for someone specific.

Private Detective Police Looking for Serial Wallet Thief in Lexington

We have a warning for shoppers about a disturbing trend over the holidays. A woman is stealing credit cards and wallets from purses in Lexington. It’s happening at area Kroger’s and TJ MAXX stores.

It’s that time of year when folks open their wallets a little more, spending money on family and friends. But having an open purse when you’re shopping? Police say that might get you out of the holiday spirt real quickly. Especially if you run into the person who police say has stolen wallets out of the purses of twelve women, mostly elderly, at area stores.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

“Keep your bags closed,” advises Detective Michael Helsby with the Lexington Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division. “Maybe if you are going to the grocery store take one credit card you are going to use and a driver’s license and keep them in your pocket.”

The alleged culprit was caught on camera at the Walmart on Richmond Road and the Target in the Hamburg area. At Walmart, surveillance cameras show a woman putting about $2400 dollars total on three reloadable gift cards, using stolen credit cards. Minutes later, she’s seen at the Target.

The victims tell police she has an accomplice, a woman who distracts the victim with a question or conversation while the other thief makes her move and steals the wallet out of the purse. They hope the public can help identify the culprit.

“We’ve had some witnesses who’ve stated they believe it was a man dressed up as a woman wearing a wig” says Detective Helsby.

Police urge women to keep their purses on their shoulders, not in their shopping carts, and they also suggest store employees should check identification when customers use credit cards to buy gift cards.

Police say the thief also used the stolen credit cards at the Apple Store at the Fayette Mall.

If you have any information, contact Lexington Police at 859-258-3600.

Identity Theft Smart Phones Playing Larger Role

PHOENIX — Smart phone technology is playing a larger role in stolen identity crimes. Thieves take pictures and video which has led to a new breed of criminal called “Shoulder Surfers.”

Becky Frost with Experian said people can record audio, video and take pictures while standing in line behind victims at the store.

“You get these shoulder surfers who are snapping pictures of your credit and debit cards,” she said. “They also take pictures while you’re filling out a credit card application in the store. If you’re signing up for a card ask the retailer for a private place to fill it out or block the application with your body or hand.”

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Frost said consumers need to keep store receipts safely stored away. Don’t just toss receipts in the trash; shred them.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Jason Davis sais stolen smart phones also provide a wealth of info for identity thieves.

“They can look for anything you have stored in there: Personal info, credit card numbers, pictures of a check, bank routing numbers and other info that thieves could use to wreak havoc on you.”

Arizona used to top the nation when it came to identity theft and, although the state has dropped to fourth in the country, it is still a big problem.
