Arson Investigation 20 Fires Set on Eastern Shore in Virginia

OAK HALL, Va. (WAVY) – A serial arsonist on the Eastern Shore struck again Saturday morning.

State police say an abandoned chicken coop on Withams Rd. in Oak Hill caught fire around 2:30 a.m. This brings the total number of arsons to 20 in less than two weeks.

Police say the arsonist targets abandoned structures, and, so far, no one has been hurt. Police say the arsonist often sets several fires each night in different parts of Accomack County. Investigators are now reaching out to residents with abandoned property, and asking them to be on the look out for suspicious activity.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

“It’s really scary, said Susan Blake, an Eastern Shore resident. “Because maybe someone will think it’s a building is abandoned, they will set it on fire, and there may be somebody in there.”

It’s a concerned shared by Virginia State Police and the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office. They worry it won’t be long before these fires turn fatal.

“The potential is there that we will have a firefighter injured or we could have someone taking shelter in one of these abandoned structures at night especially with the temperatures dropping. The potential is there that somebody is going be seriously injured or killed as a result of these fires,” said Corinne Gellar, Public Relations Director for Virginia State Police.

Volunteer fire departments have been pushed to the max knocking down the blazes with little relief.

“I feel sorry for them having to fight them big fires, because when the fires are fully engulfed,” said Sherry Alfree, a resident on the Eastern Shore.

Investigators are now are asking citizens to be keep their eyes peeled for unusual activity around abandoned structures.

“Somebody out there knows something about these fires or the person or persons setting them. Our concerns is safety obviously of the community at large. We’ve got to put a stop to these fires,” said Gellar.

Anyone with information is asked to please call the Virginia State Police toll-free at 1-800-582-8350 or (757) 424-6820; or call the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office at (757) 787-1131. There is a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in these cases.

Two Greenup County Sheriff’s deputies are sent to the hospital after busting a meth operation.

The deputies were out serving a warrant in rural Greenup County, and once they got inside the home, Hubert Dehart barricaded himself in a bathroom with an active meth lab and tried to get rid of the evidence.

Wrongful Death SC Woman’s Body Found, Husband Arrested

NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC — A body found in the Broad River in Newberry County on Friday has been identified as a South Carolina woman, and her husband has been arrested and charged with murder, officials say.

The woman, identified by Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton as Cindy Marie Koon, 42, of Prosperity, was found near S.C. 213 around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Koon had been beaten, stabbed and cut, according to Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster. She died from a slit jugular vein, Newton said.

Koon’s husband, Allen Lee Koon, 42, also of Prosperity, has been arrested and charged with murder, Foster said in a statement issued Saturday.

Koon reported his wife missing almost at the same time her body was identified, shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, Foster said. Investigators used the state’s fingerprint identification system to identify Koon.

Investigators went to Koon’s home with a search warrant and found several items of evidence, Foster said.

Investigators declined to elaborate on the amount and type of evidence found. But the sheriff said Koon was arrested and charged based on the evidence from the search and statements made during police interviews.

The couple had a documented history of domestic problems dating back to 2007, Foster said. Neither Koon nor his wife had convictions of domestic violence, according to sheriff’s office records.

Koon is believed to have acted alone in the death and moving of his wife’s body, Foster said.

Koon is being held at the Newberry County Detention Center. A bond hearing before a circuit court judge had not been set Saturday afternoon.

Wrongful Death Florida Woman Arrested, Husband’s Body Found in Home

Detectives in Florida are trying to unravel the mystery of how a woman’s husband died after his body was found decomposing inside their home.

James Dennis Peters, 62, who has had a history of domestic violence arrests with his 56-year-old wife, Sheree Hines Peters, was found lying on the ground covered in a sheet, Fox 13 reports.

Relatives and neighbors in Haines City became suspicious after asking Sheree where her husband was the past three weeks. She claimed he was hunting, at a hospital or doing yard work, investigators say.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Two of James’ daughters and a sister-in-law approached the house Friday and discovered his body after questioning Sheree, who drove away and said she had to get gas.

Polk County Police later arrested Sheree at a Dundee motel room and charged her with manslaughter, possession of cocaine and tampering with evidence, Fox 13 reports.

Sheree told police that she shot James in a struggle over a gun, but after authorities couldn’t find the weapon in her home, she said she sold the gun to buy drugs.

Missing Person 3 Boys Missing Since Thanksgiving 2010

DETROIT — Tanya Zuvers says she’s ready to confront the man suspected in the disappearance of her three sons two years ago — the boys’ father.

She said she wants to visit John Skelton in the Upper Peninsula prison where he is serving a 10- to 15-year sentence after pleading no contest last year to unlawful imprisonment in connection with the boys’ disappearance.

Zuvers said it would be the first time she has spoken with her ex-husband since their sons went missing from their Morenci home over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2010.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“Where I’m at in my own personal growth, I’m ready to confront some things with him, and I have things I want to say to him,” she said.

On Sunday, supporters will gather at Wakefield Park in Morenci to raise awareness and remember Andrew, Alexander and Tanner, who were ages 9, 7 and 5 when they went missing.

Skelton has insisted he doesn’t know where his sons are and said they are with members of an underground sanctuary group. Police believe he murdered the boys.

Zuvers has thought about what she’d say to her ex if he accepts her visit. She even has jotted down some notes — but she wants Skelton to be the first to hear it. She said the conversation would mostly focus on their sons.

Maybe she’ll get some answers, Zuvers said.

“You know,” she said, “there was a time when we were in love, and I don’t know what went wrong there.”

‘Running out of time’

On the one-year anniversary of the boys’ disappearance, community members and other supporters filled the bleachers of the city’s high school gym. Zuvers pleaded for everyone to keep praying.

“And let’s not have to do this in another 365 days,” she said at the time.

But the two-year anniversary has come.

“Our hope is that we’ll get them home within the year,” the boys’ grandfather Don Zuvers said Tuesday. “I said last year that they would be home this year, but we’re running out of time.”

In the past year, efforts have continued to get information about their disappearance.

Members of an awareness group have been passing out fliers at rest areas and truck stops along major roadways, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children released age-progressed images of the boys.

Seeing her sons older was difficult at first for Tanya Zuvers.

“It was very emotional,” she said. “But now it’s almost like, when I think of them and maybe what they’re doing today, I can almost picture them looking like that.”

Despite the new images, the investigative task force still believes Skelton killed his boys and disposed of their bodies.

What records show

During a court hearing in July 2011, after prosecutors struck a plea deal with Skelton, Lenawee County Circuit Judge Margaret M.S. Noe read aloud details from police reports.

Skelton pleaded no contest to charges of unlawful imprisonment, and charges of kidnapping — punishable by up to life in prison — were dismissed.

Noe said Skelton told investigators that he wrapped his sons in blankets, gave them stuffed animals, put them in his van and drove away.

Noe said records show Skelton searched the Internet for information on how to break a neck a week before his sons went missing and reportedly took his sons’ winter coats and toothbrushes to his aunt’s house and said he didn’t need them anymore.

Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks said investigators believe Skelton disposed of his sons’ bodies within 80 miles of Morenci, based on information from cellphone records.

In a statement released Tuesday, police said Skelton’s story has been “wrought with inconsistencies.”

“His choice to hide behind this outlandish story is selfish and cowardly,” Weeks said in the statement. “If he cared about his sons at all, he would disclose the truth and bring resolution to this case.”

The next step

Zuvers holds out hope that her sons are alive but said she knows it is possible they were killed.

“But until they can give me 100 percent proof,” she said, “I don’t have to believe it.”

Zuvers said she has gone to counseling, which helped her realize “that there are things that right now in my life I have no control of. I cannot change certain things, so I have to accept that.”

She said she has realized she wants to speak to Skelton, who is being housed in a prison in Munising. If he won’t visit with her, Zuvers said she will write him a letter.

In the past year, Zuvers said, she has learned that she has to move on with life.

“You’ve got to keep living, you can’t not be a part of life and you’ve got to go on,” she said. “And that was a hard thing to come to that it was OK to keep living life.”

Identity Theft a Concern in Web Shopping

Cyber Monday — the term coined for the first Monday after Thanksgiving, when consumers are expected to shop online en masse for holiday deals — is two days away.

Many of those transactions require inputting credit or debit card information and other personal data online.

The National Retail Federation estimates holiday sales this year will total about $586.1 billion, a 4.1 percent increase over last year. Of those holiday sales, $96 billion may be done over the Internet, 12 percent more than in 2011, the trade association said.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Whether consumers are shopping online during Cyber Monday or any other time of year, officials say consumers should protect themselves against the potential of identity theft.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, 7 percent of U.S households, about 8.6 million, had at least one member age 12 or older who was the victim of identity theft in 2010, the most recent year for which data is available. Of those households, 64.1 percent experienced the misuse or attempted misuse of credit card information.

The bureau defines identity theft as the unauthorized use or attempted use of credit cards, existing accounts such as checking accounts, or the misuse of personal information to obtain new accounts or loans or to commit other crimes.

One way personal information may be stolen is over unsecure Wi-Fi connections, according to the Federal Communications Commission.

Wi-Fi networks, which many consumers use to shop, enable wireless connection to the Internet by extending broadband service in a home, or by connecting to so-called hot spots in public places such as coffee shops, hotels and airports, the FCC said in a release.

“In using these networks,” the FCC said, “it is important to understand that information being transmitted over them can potentially be intercepted if the networks are not secure.”

The FCC said consumers should be aware of whether they are using a secure (encrypted) or unsecure (unencrypted) network.

Encrypted information is encoded so it cannot be easily deciphered if intercepted.

When using an unencrypted network, consumers should be particularly cautious about sending sensitive information — whether that network is in a home or public space.

To turn on encryption, consumers should check instructions that came with their wireless router.

“If your computer and router will support it, WPA2 is the most effective encryption standard for Wi-Fi,” the agency said.

Activating the firewall on a home’s wireless router is another way to prevent unauthorized people from accessing the network.

It’s also a good idea to change the router’s default password, as many wireless routers come with default passwords others might know or be able to figure out easily.

“Change the password to your router to a unique combination of letters, numbers and symbols that only you know in order to ensure that you will be the only one who holds the keys to your router,” the FCC said.

The Ulster County Consumer Affairs Division offers tips on how to create secure Internet passwords.

“One of the problems with computer passwords is that users forget them,” said Patrick Long, senior consumer advocate for the division, in a written release. “In an effort not to forget them, they use simple things like their dog’s name, children’s names, birth dates, etc.”

Long said, for a potential identity thief, this is the equivalent of locking the front door and leaving the key under the doormat.

He said in order to create a secure password:

• Do not use personal information, like names and birthdays.

• Do not use real words.

• Mix letters, numbers and symbols.

• Use a different password for each application that requires one.

• Change the password at least every 30 to 60 days, and don’t reuse a password for at least a year.

A victim of identity theft may file a complaint with the local police department.

However, those cases can sometimes be difficult to solve because of jurisdictional issues, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. John Watterson said.

The FCC said if consumers are using an unsecure Wi-Fi network, they should determine if the website they are on is encrypted by looking for the letters “https” — the “s” stands for secure — at the beginning of the Web address, and a lock icon at the bottom or top of the browser’s window.

Also, if consumers are in a public Wi-Fi area, but not using the Internet, they may want to disable their wireless connection by either removing the external Wi-Fi card or clicking on the internal connection to turn it off.

Missing Person Body of Missing Statesville, NC Man Found in VA

Statesville resident Leroy Harmon, 61, described by those who knew him as humble, loyal and dedicated to friends, family and his work, was found dead in a vehicle at a camp site Saturday morning in Grayson County, Va.

According to Statesville Police Department Chief Tom Anderson, authorities there said no evidence at the scene suggested foul play. Harmon was listed as a missing person, and wasn’t heard from since Monday.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Grayson County is about 75 miles northwest of Statesville and I-77 north passes through the county. According to family friend Jackie Edwards of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Harmon owned a camper that he kept in that area as a sort of getaway.

Harmon was last heard from at 8:19 a.m. Monday, when he called his workplace, Black Automotive in Statesville, and reported having car trouble. Harmon, a mechanic for more than 30 years, told a co-worker he would take care of the repairs and return to work as soon as possible.

Sgt. Charlie Rambo of the Statesville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division said Friday that the phone call Harmon made to his workplace was traced to the Columbia, S.C., area.

Edwards told the R&L on Friday that Harmon told family members Sunday night that he was on the way to South Carolina to pick up a trailer.

Harmon’s brother, Bruce, said Friday it was unusual for Leroy to not keep in contact with family.

“He was the most loyal, honest and trustworthy person you could ever meet,” Edwards said Saturday after hearing of Leroy’s passing. “They just don’t make people like that. They just don’t. He was a genuine soul, and I can’t believe this has happened. I just can’t believe it. I was hoping to God they would find him. We were just hoping that maybe he wanted to get away.”

Bruce Harmon drove to Virginia on Saturday to identify his brother’s body.

“He was a great guy,” Bruce said.

William Boggs, owner of Boggs Motor Company, which employed Leroy for a number of years, remembered his former wrecker driver as selfless.

“He was just a very helpful person,” said Boggs. “He’d go out of his way to help somebody do anything. He was a very positive person.”

Leroy, a Statesville High School graduate, was not married and had no children, according to his brother. He lived with and cared for his mother.

And his favorite musician was Elvis Presley, said Edwards.

“He was probably one of the biggest Elvis fans you’d ever met,” Edwards said. “I cannot tell you the stuff he’d collected.”

Every holiday season, Leroy was known to pick up groups of elderly women from local churches and take them to see the Christmas lights at Tanglewood. His family is originally from the Banner Elk area, and he returned to the mountains each winter with his mother.

“Leroy was the type of person that — everybody always came before him,” Edwards said. “I never heard a cuss word come out of the man’s mouth. … I never saw him get mad. I never saw him get upset. He was always the same — friendly, happy, nothing ever bothered him.”

Boggs reiterated that Leroy would be missed in the community.

“The world would be a better place if there were more Leroy Harmons,” Boggs said. “He was a unique person.”

Anderson said he was saddended to hear of Harmon’s death.

In Harmon’s time as a wrecker driver, he regularly came to wreck scenes and answered requests from law enforcement to pick up broken down or abandoned vehicles.

“I’ve known him since I started working here,” said Anderson, who has been with the SPD for 18 years.

“He was a great, great guy.”
