Identity Theft Tips to Protect Your Teen

Teens can be easy targets for fraudsters.

Scammers seek out teens because teens have clean records and no established credit reports. Teens are also avid social network and Internet users, where personal data are more readily available.

The result is that teens make up 31% of identity theft cases reported every year, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

ID theft happens when a fraudster uses your personal information — such as a Social Security, credit card or bank account number — to purchase goods and services.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Unfortunately, teens usually don’t find out about ID theft scams until they apply for a driver’s license or get a credit card. By then, the damage is already done, says Robert Siciliano, a Boston-based personal security expert. Identity thieves may have already racked up thousands in debt under the teen’s name.

Later, teens may have difficulty getting a student loan, credit cards and even jobs, because employers are now checking credit reports of prospective employees, he says.

Siciliano says that’s why explaining the risks and pitfalls of a digital lifestyle is very important. That means their best defense is probably you — their parent. Here are some ways to help protect your teen from ID theft.

Educate, educate, educate. One problem is that teens typically don’t check their bank accounts, says Sedgrid Lewis, founder of Atlanta-based Spy Parent LLC. So they’re the perfect targets, he says.

In countering that, Adam Levin, chairman of ID theft solutions site IDT911.com, says parents should stress that teens should exercise control over these assets, since their management can lead to financial gain, and lack of control can lead to financial pain. Your financial identity, created throughout your life as you save, spend and invest, can be seriously damaged by ID theft.

An identity thief can steal your Social Security number and use it to get a credit card, racking up charges, ruining your credit score and increasing your borrowing costs, if you even can borrow money after your credit is ruined.

Tell your child: Every dollar paid for having a low credit score is one you could have invested instead, Levin says. “It’s important to play a parental role because teens aren’t so concerned about providing information,” he says.

Begin by educating teens on digital behavior because they spend money online or take online quizzes, making them more susceptible to fraud, Levin says. Tell your teen to look for secure sites signified by a golden lock or only go to big sites such as Amazon or eBay. The golden lock signifies a high level of security in which your data are encrypted, so others can’t read it.

Also, warn teens about taking online quizzes or surveys promising free stuff, Levin says. Their purpose is to find out personal information, such as a teen’s favorite color or mother’s maiden name, so fraudsters can answer security questions that unlock their identity. “Some of them are actually sponsored by the bad guys,” he says.

Online gaming communities that use the Xbox and PlayStation game systems also can be dangerous for teens. You can play with people all over the world, and scammers may use fake identities in these communities to get personal information such as an account password or email address. Teens should be warned not to give out personal information online while playing these video games.

Need help educating your teen? Lots of online resources — even banks and credit unions — have primers and videos. For example, Palo Alto, Calif.-based Stanford Federal Credit Union offers tips for preventing teen ID theft. The San Diego-based Identity Theft Resource Center website also has tutorials directed at teens.

You can use a teen checking account as a teaching point. Helping your child open a checking account is a great starting point for educating them, Lewis says. “Show them how to protect data like account numbers and checking balances on a daily basis,” he says.

Check their Facebook page. As enthusiastic social networkers, teens unwittingly may share vital information, such as their birthday, address or phone number, on Facebook and other social media venues. Those are some of the same details used to verify your identity on financial documents.

“Kids shouldn’t create big mistakes that take years to put back together,” Levin says.

Scrutinize their checking account balances. Kids typically don’t check their banking records, so parents should suggest downloading their bank’s mobile app to check their accounts daily, Lewis says. Parents also can follow up by checking their kids’ online or monthly statements.

They should look for account charges by unknown entities. “You want to know how they’re spending their money anyway and to make sure that no one else is using their accounts,” Lewis says.

Ratchet up security. Teens don’t always use proper password security on computers or smartphones, either forgoing security measures entirely or coming up with dumb, easy-to-uncover passwords for computers and laptops, Levin says. Or they leave their smartphones lying around.

And it’s not just the teens who are at risk. “Parents can be significantly damaged if their home computer is breached and tax information is on it,” IDT911.com’s Levin says.

One solution is to put parental blocks on computers used by teens, says Xavier Epps, a financial adviser for XNE Financial Advising LLC in Woodbridge, Va. Parental blocks are online tools that limit computer use, blocking specific websites. LifeLock Inc., of Tempe, Ariz., monitors a person’s identity for a monthly or yearly fee, but it can be set up to cover the family, too, he says.

Lewis advises to help your child download password-protection apps so no one can steal financial data, and to instruct teens not to give out their passwords to anyone. “Teens are notorious for sharing their online passwords,” he says.

Using preventive measures now is worth it to avoid financial pain later.

Missing Teen Denver, CO Avery Dawn Workman

DENVER — Friends and family members of a missing Elbert County teenager are saying they believe a dreadlocked man drugged the girl and took her on a bus against her will.

Avery Dawn Workman, 16, was last seen Sunday afternoon at the 16th Street Mall performing stunts with her circus group. A witnesses told Workman’s friends and a family a man with patches on both his overalls and hat grabbed her.

“He has dreadlocks, light brown or blond hair and a little bit of scruff on his face — not like a homeless person, who would have a full beard,” Workman’s friend Jo Petit said. “We believe that he drugged her and put her on a bus against her will. A witness also said the bus was coming to Boulder.”

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Based on that tip, Workman’s friends headed to Boulder Tuesday to hand out flyers and look for the missing teen. She is approximately 5-foot-4-inches tall and weighs about 120 pounds. She also has a birthmark under her left eye.

Anyone with information is being urged to call police.

Matthew Denholm, who was already in jail for a double shooting at a Berea apartment back in November that left one man dead, is also charged in the deaths.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Keene and Denholm are due back in court for a status hearing in January. The trial date for both in murders of Warford and Walker was set for August 12, 2013.

According to court documents, Keene admitted to kidnapping Warford and Walker from their apartment. He says he and an accomplice, now named as Denholm, took the two to an area off Tates Creek Road in Richmond, where the two were tortured. He said Warford was shot execution style, while Walker was stabbed several times, had his throat slashed, then had his gold teeth removed.

Pedophile Tracking Victory Christian Rape Case

TULSA, Okla. —

The District Attorney’s office has filed four felony charges in the case of a 13-year-old police say was raped at Victory Christian Center by an employee of the church and school.

20-year old Chris Denman now faces one count of first degree rape of a victim under 14 years of age, forcible oral sodomy on a child under 14 years of age, lewd molestation and use of a computer to facilitate a sex crime.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

A filing in district court says Denman used “his computer and/or smart phone device to communicate on Facebook with the 13-year-old (victim) for the purpose of facilitating the rape and/or oral sodomy of (the victim).”

Police say the attack occurred on Aug. 13th at Victory Christian Center, 7700 S. Lewis Ave.

An arrest and booking report obtained by KRMG last week identifies Denman’s status as unemployed, but lists Victory as his former employer and police have confirmed to KRMG that he was working at the facility at the time of the reported assault.

Police records go on to indicate the girl claims she told Victory “leaders” about the rape on Aug. 15 and that they failed to notify police or the girl’s parents until Aug. 30.

Tulsa Police Officer Leland Ashley tells KRMG the process of determining who those “leaders” were remains a focus of investigation.

Neither police nor the D.A.’s office has yet indicated whether any investigation into other personnel at Victory Christian is underway.

It is unlawful in Oklahoma to know of the abuse of a child and not report it.

Detectives caught up with Denman on Sept. 5 and arrested him on complaints of first-degree rape of a minor and forcible sodomy of a minor.

He remains jailed on bonds totaling $100,000 and has a court appearance scheduled for Friday, Sept. 14.

Identity Theft Florida Man Sentenced to 34 Months

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Florida man was sentenced Monday to nearly three years in prison on access device fraud and aggravated identity theft charges. The sentencing follows an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

According to court records, J’Melle Hooks, 26, of Cocoa, Fla., was apprehended and searched at the Peace Bridge in September 2011. Hooks was attempting to enter Canada from the United States. Hooks was found to be in possession of stolen healthcare records containing personal identifying information for hundreds of individuals.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

It was later discovered that tax returns were fraudulently filed using some of the identities listed in the medical records. Refunds issued by the Internal Revenue Service were automatically put onto debit cards. The defendant had six of these debit cards in his possession at the time of his arrest. Hooks used these credit cards in multiple locations in the United States and Canada to make purchases and obtain cash.

The victims say they are in Lexington from Korea working on a film about Kentucky.

Missing Person Laguna Hills Man Maybe Victim of Foul Play

LAGUNA HILLS – Investigators are asking for the public’s help to find a truck driver who has been missing for nearly a month, authorities said.

Since Oscar Javier Contreras Escobar went missing, investigators said they have spotted suspicious ATM transactions on his bank accounts, said investigator Don Voght of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Officials believe he may be the victim of foul play.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html
Oscar Javier Contreras Escobar has been missing since Aug. 28. Authorities suspect he may be the victim of foul play.

The 29-year-old truck driver was last seen Aug. 28, just after he finished a long haul from the East Coast, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Department.

Escobar arrived at Victorville at 6:30 a.m. with his big-rig. Sometime between 7 and 9 a.m., he was dropped off by a friend in Fontana near Foothill Boulevard and Mango Street to meet up with a female friend. Authorities have yet to identify her, Voght said.

“His phone is either turned off or the battery has died since,” Voght said.

Escobar has not contacted family members, which is odd for the Laguna Hills resident, he said.

His family members filed a missing-person report Sept. 4.

Investigators have found suspicious transactions in Escobar’s accounts and are trying to track down that information, Voght said.

Escobar lives in Laguna Hills, but he frequents the Inland Empire. He also stays in motels in Fontana. Several family members live in Lake Forest.

He is described as a Latino man, 5 feet, 5 inches tall, 135 pounds with brown eyes and a bald head. He had a moustache and goatee.

When he was last seen, he was wearing a white T-shirt, brown cargo shorts, and white Nike shoes with a black swoosh.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 714-647-7055 or 714-628-7170.

Missing Person Brittany Dickson of Harland, Michigan

It has been 24 hours since Aimee Lawrence last saw or had any contact with her 17-year-old daughter, Brittany Dickson.

The family has tried to file a missing person report with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department, but was told they must wait until Friday before they can do so because of Brittany’s age and if there is a question of her safety.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

According to Deputy Sokol of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department, because Brittany is 17, she is considered to be a legal adult.

“If she’s 17, you can’t file her as missing unless you have some reason to believe that she’s in danger,” Sokol said.

The family recently received a text from a “boyfriend” telling the family he knew where she was. Although Lawrence says she she does not know the boyfriend and has never met him before, the family was told they must wait three days before her daughter can officially be listed as a missing person.

Lawrence says she will attempt to file another report on Friday if she has not heard from Brittany by then.

Brittany left her home in Hartland around 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon after a fight with her mother. The teenager walked out of the house with no shoes and left behind her cell phone.

“Yesterday when she left, I couldn’t believe it,” Lawrence said. “We got into a fight and all last night all I kept thinking was that last time I saw her, we were yelling and screaming at each other.”

Lawrence, who has been following her daughter’s Facebook page hoping for any new posts that may lead her to her daughter, believes Brittany may be at a girlfriend’s house, possibly in Rockford, but is unable to get confirmation and has had no communication with her daughter in over 24 hours.

“I want to hear from her,” Lawrence said. “My message, that is the most important to me, is I want to hear her voice, to know that she is OK and Sophia, her 7-year-old sister, is going to want to talk to her.”

Lawrence contacted the police on Monday night after her daughter left and was told she had to wait 24 hours before she could file a report. Now, Lawrence and her family are left “waiting for the phone to ring” hoping Brittany will call or to find out any information about their daughter.

“I am surprised that she has not contacted me or anything,” Lawrence said. “All I want is a call, a one-minute phone call.”

If you have any information regarding Brittany’s whereabouts, contact the family at 313-590-1892.
