Private Detective Renoir Painting Added to FBI’s Top Ten Art Crimes

An oil painting by French Impressionist Pierre Auguste Renoir stolen from a Houston home last year—and estimated to be worth $1 million—is the newest addition to the FBI’s Top Ten Art Crimes list.

The painting, Madeleine Leaning on Her Elbow with Flowers in Her Hair, was stolen during an armed robbery on September 8, 2011. The homeowner was watching television when she heard a loud noise downstairs. When she went to investigate, she was confronted by an armed man in a ski mask.

“We hope that adding the Renoir to the FBI’s Top Ten list and publicizing the reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the recovery of the painting will prompt someone to come forward,” said Peter Schneider, a sergeant with the Houston Police Department who is a member of the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force in Houston.

Information about the painting has been included in the FBI’s National Stolen Art File, as well as other similar online tools—including the Art Loss Register and Interpol’s Works of Art database—that alert art dealers, gallery owners, and auction houses about missing and stolen artwork.

“If the thief tries to place the painting with a reputable dealer or gallery, or tries to sell it at auction, members of the art community here and overseas who regularly check these databases will see that the artwork has been stolen and will alert the FBI,” said Bonnie Magness-Gardiner, who manages the Bureau’s art theft program. “Our goal is to provide information about this theft to the widest audience possible,” she said.

Renoir, a master Impressionist, painted Madeleine Leaning on Her Elbow with Flowers in Her Hair in 1918. The canvas size is 50.17 x 41.28 centimeters, and the artist signed the oil portrait in the lower right corner. The painting was taken with its frame intact from the stairwell where it hung.

The masked robber, who forced entry through the back door of the home, is described as a white male, 18 to 26 years old, who weighs about 160 pounds and is approximately 5’-10” tall. He was armed with a large-caliber, semi-automatic handgun.

Sgt. Schneider said that while Houston has had its share of art crimes, few have been as high-profile as the theft of the Renoir. He added that the thief would likely try to sell the painting in a larger art community like New York or Los Angeles, or possibly overseas.

The FBI established the Top Ten Art Crimes list in 2005. Since then, six paintings and one sculpture have been recovered, including a Rembrandt self-portrait and another Renoir work titled Young Parisian stolen from Sweden’s National Museum. The current list may be found on our art theft program page listed below.

We need your help: Anyone with information about the stolen Renoir is encouraged to contact their local FBI office or the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, or to submit a tip online at www.fbi.gov. A private insurer is offering up to $50,000 for information leading to the recovery of the painting.

Accident Reconstruction 2 Died Near Reed Point, Montana

Two people died on Tuesday morning after a pickup truck crashed off of an Interstate 90 overpass near Reed Point.

Montana Highway Patrol Sgt. JV Moody said the crash happened at about 7:30 a.m. as an eastbound Chevrolet S-10 pickup neared the Reed Point exit on I-90.

It appears that the female driver fell asleep and the pickup veered into the median, Moody said. The pickup flew off the overpass and fell nearly 20 feet to the road below.

Neither the woman who was driving nor a male passenger wore seatbelts. One was thrown from the truck while another was partially thrown during the crash and both died at the scene, Moody said.

Investigators were still working to identify the man as of 11:30 a.m., but they believe both of them are from Washington, Moody said.

Their names and ages have not been released and the crash is being investigated. One lane of eastbound I-90 near the crash scene will be closed for a short time while investigators work.

Missing Person Tenesha Nunley of Muskogee

Kimberly Patton hasn’t heard from her sister in a week, and she and other family members are worried.

Patton said she hasn’t heard from her sister, Tenesha Nunley, since Sept. 11.

“We’re just hoping she’s OK,” Patton said. “We’re worried; this is just not like her at all. She calls for the simplest things, just to tell us what she’s cooking, stuff like that.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“To not hear from her for this long worries us.”

Muskogee Police Lt. Bobby Lee said a missing-person report on Nunley was filed Monday.

Nunley, 26, has had recent run-ins with the police.

She was arrested Sept. 11 and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled drug with intent to distribute and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

Nunley also was questioned as a person of interest in a recent shooting but was quickly cleared by police.

Lee said family members filed the report after rumors began circulating that Nunley had been killed.

“We’ve heard those rumors,” he said. “That’s exactly what the missing-person report says, that they’ve heard rumors she’s been killed.”

Patton said Nunley is a “good, but naive” person, who gets continually caught up with the wrong people.

Nunley is serving a 10-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty in 2010 to being an accessory to felony for harboring two men involved in the fatal Arrowhead Mall shooting.

“We try to tell her to be more careful, because she has these people she thinks are her friends, and they don’t care about her,” Patton said. “I’ve told her the only ones really there for her is her family.”

Lee said Nunley’s two children are with family members.

Patton said it’s possible that Nunley left town to avoid trouble, but she’d like to know for sure.

“If she reads this or someone who knows where she is reads this, please call us,” she said. “We don’t have to know where she is, we just want to know she’s OK.”

Drug Dog Sweep Drugs and Officers Gun Found in Harrodsburg, KY

Police in Harrodsburg say they discovered drugs and a gun stolen from a Lexington police officer during a traffic stop last week.

Officers pulled over a car last Wednesday along Park Place. Police say the vehicle was involved in an ongoing drug trafficking investigation. According to police, officers smelled marijuana and alcohol when they approached, and called in a drug-sniffing K9. When the dog indicated the presence of drugs, officers searched the car and found cocaine, a small stash of marijuana and a large amount of cash. Police say they also found a 9mm Glock that was later identified as a weapon stolen from a Lexington police officer. Officers say they found two addition weapons, later determined to be BB guns made to resemble an AK47 and M4 assault rifle.

Missing Person Hand and Foot of Independence Man Found

Independence, MO —

The skeletal remains of a foot and a hand found along Little Blue River this summer belong to a man who went missing earlier this year.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Sharp said Monday that the remains were that of Christopher Porter, 28, of Independence, who was reported missing in February.

Sharp did not comment on whether foul play was involved, saying that it was still a missing person case under investigation by the Independence Police Department.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Independence police spokesperson Tom Gentry said the case remain under investigation and the remains were still being reviewed by the medical examiner.

“It is still open,” Gentry said. “At this point, we have not determined if there was foul play involved. Until we get more from the investigation or the medical examiner, we can’t say what it is yet. It may sound strange, but because we only have a hand or a foot at this point, we can’t say positively that he is deceased at this point.”

Ronda Montgomery, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, agreed, saying that the remains were too badly decomposed to determine a cause of death on them alone.

Porter was last seen near Centerpoint Medical Center on Feb. 1. Police said that Porter had diminished mental capabilities because of a brain injury.

On March 6 of this year, police searched the property east of Centerpoint for Porter but did not find anything after about an hour of searching.

On June 25, a pair of kayakers on the Little Blue River discovered skeletal remains of a human hand. Ten days later on July 5, a fisherman found a shoe with the remains of a human foot inside.

The Sheriff’s Office sent the remains of the hand to the University of Texas to be examined because the county lacked the equipment to run DNA comparisons. The foot remains were sent to a Kansas City crime lab.

Montgomery said that numerous agencies assisted in the investigation.

Wrongful Death Body of San Jose Woman Identified

AROMAS — Police have identified the body of a woman found on a remote stretch of Cannon Road in Aromas Sept. 7 as Norife Herrera Jones, 29, a Filipino from San Jose.

Her death is being investigated by the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department and the Monterey Police Department as a homicide, said Lt. Leslie Fry Sonné. Police later arrested Jones’ ex-husband, Lawrence Jones, 69, on suspicion of homicide.

San Benito County requested the assistance of the Monterey Police Department last week because they believed Jones had recently lived with Lawrence Jones of Monterey. The couple had been married about five years.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Lawrence Jones is a distinguished Naval Postgraduate School professor and internationally recognized financial expert, according to the Monterey Herald.

San Benito County detectives served a search warrant at Lawrence Jones’ residence on the 100 block of Spray Avenue on Sept. 13, shortly after 8 p.m. Evidence found at the scene led to the Monterey Police assuming jurisdiction of the homicide investigation, Sonné said.

Detectives from both agencies continued working through the night and were able to locate Jones in Los Angeles County. Jones was brought back to Monterey on Saturday and is now in Monterey County Jail. He has been charged with homicide.

Sonné said police have had contact with Jones in the past in the upscale neighborhood of Spray Avenue. Sonné could not comment on the nature of the police response.

Members of the Federal Bureau of Investigations Evidence Response Team are assisting with the forensic investigation.

An autopsy was performed but police are not commenting on how Norife Herrera Jones was killed.

“From the beginning, this has been a multi-jurisdiction investigation with Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and San Jose Police Department working with San Benito County before the investigation moved to Monterey,” Sonné said. “Detectives from San Benito County and Monterey Police will continue working together on the homicide investigation. This appears to be an interpersonal domestic homicide. We did seize a vehicle at the Spray Avenue residence.”
