Missing Person Ivy Dawn Merck FOUND Safe

A 25-year-old Athens woman who had been missing for nearly a month was found alive and well in Florida, authorities reported late Saturday afternoon.

Ivy Dawn Merck turned up in Miami, where she has been reunited with her parents, according to message that was posted about 6:30 p.m. on the Facebook page of the Camden County Sheriff’s Office in southeast Georgia.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The agency had been searching for Merck since Aug. 23, after the University of Georgia graduate drove from her home in Athens to her hometown of Kingsland in Camden County, but never showed up at her parents’ home.

Authorities had feared the worst, and on Friday even said there was a high probability she had intentionally disappeared with plans to harm herself.

Friday was Merck’s 25th birthday, and family members set up a special Facebook page that day for people concerned about the woman’s well-being to post birthday greetings with hopes she would read them and let her family know she was alright.

Details of how she was found were not immediately available Saturday evening.

The Camden County Sheriff’s Office announced that Merck had been found in a brief statement on the agency’s Facebook page:

“Ivy Dawn Merck was found alive today in Miami. Her parents are with her at this time. More details will be forthcoming but she is alive. Thank you all for your help, support and prayers through this very trying time.”

Merck lives with a roommate on Inglewood Avenue off Oak Street in eastern Athens and is a technician at Good Hands Veterinary Hospital in Oconee County.

On Aug. 21, she told her roommate and supervisor that she was leaving to visit her parents, but Steven Merck said he knew nothing of plans by his daughter to drive from Athens to Kingsland.

She boarded her dog in Kingsland on Aug. 23. One week later, a sheriff’s deputy in Florida’s Broward County found Merck’s car in the parking lot of a shopping center in Deerfield Beach, some 350 miles from her parents’ home.

The car had virtually run out of gas and the tires were so bald it had to be towed from the parking lot, authorities said.

Merck left notes for her parents and roommate in the car that described personal problems she needed to work out, but did not mention anything about harming herself, according to Deputy William Terrell, spokesman for the Camden County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators turned over those notes, Merck’s diary and other evidence to a group of criminal profilers on Thursday, and the consensus was that she had likely intentionally disappeared with plans to harm herself, Terrell said.

But investigators never lost hope, and one theory they pinned slim hopes on was that Merck might have dropped off the radar because she was embarrassed about publicity her disappearance created, only compounding the personal issues she was struggling with.

That’s why authorities and family members appealed to everyone who was concerned to post birthday wishes on the newly created Facebook page, “Find Ivy Dawn Merck.”

“We created this page to give people a place to express their concern for Ivy and show her how much she is loved and valued by family, friends and the community,” said the missing woman’s sister-in-law, Stephanie Baker Merck.

“We made this page with her birthday in mind, but we would have done it regardless,” she said.

On an Internet site where many concerned friends and even strangers posted birthday messages on Friday, a day later dozens more already were expressing emotions of joy and relief.

“An answered prayer!!!” one person commented.

“I am so glad that she was found alive,” another wrote. “Thank you God for keeping her safe.”

Arson Investigation 2 Homes in Girardville, PA

GIRARDVILLE – A fire that heavily damaged two homes early Saturday was arson.

“This is a set fire,” said state police fire marshal Trooper Michael Yeity of the blaze that started to the rear of unoccupied homes at 201-203 B St.

Yeity is working with Girardville fire Chief Frank Zangari Jr. and borough police to bring the arsonist to justice.

Yeity said someone lit the fire at a shed behind the properties and flames spread from there.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

Although the fire marshal said the fire was set at the western side of the shed, he did not elaborate on the exact cause.

Firefighters were called about 12:15 a.m. for a shed fire but borough police Officer in Charge John Borchick arrived within minutes and reported flames spread to the homes.

Borchick said there was heavy fire to the rear of both homes when he got there.

He was at the police station two blocks away completing paperwork when he received the call about the fire, and he had no trouble finding where to go.

“I could see the flames when I left the station,” Borchick said. “The whole back was blazing.”

Both Yeity and Borchick said the investigation into the blaze is continuing.

Earlier in the morning, Borchick said one man was taken into custody for questioning about the fire but no arrests had been made.

Zangari said firefighters quickly knocked down flames to the rear of the building and were able to keep the damage to the two vacant structures.

Firefighters from Ashland and Shenandoah brought their aerial devices to the scene to assist with ventilating the roof of the 201 B St. home and helped battle the blaze.

Zangari credited firefighters with containing the fire despite all the homes having a common attic through which the flames could have spread.

“The firefighters did an outstanding job,” he said. “They kept it to the two vacant buildings despite the common attics.”

Zangari said one firefighter was injured, apparently suffering from smoke inhalation, and was treated at a local hospital and released.

In addition to the homes at 201-203 B St., homes on B Street, Vine Street and Ogden streets sustained heat damage to vinyl siding.

Steve Brozyno, who with his wife and son and daughter lives at 205 B St., said there was apparently minor smoke damage to their home.

Brozyno said he was at work then the fire was discovered and that his family was able to get out of the home safely.

EMS units from Lost Creek, Frackville and Mahanoy City assisted at the scene along with borough fire police, who provided both traffic and crowd control.

Identity Theft Hormel Worker in Austin, TX Arrested

Mayo Clinic Health System of Austin documents have led Austin police to a man who may have been illegally working at Hormel for more than five years.

Police arrested Caltzontzin Gonzalez-Alonso, 33, on Sept. 12, after Mayo officials discovered that someone had been receiving care under the name of a deceased person. According to the court complaint, Gonzalez-Alonso had used the name Francisco Nanez Jr at Mayo and had an outstanding bill of $698.50.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

A detective found Gonzalez-Alonso at Hormel on Sept. 12, wearing a hard-hat with the name Nanez. According to the complaint, a detective confronted Gonzalez-Alonso with the Nanez ID, and Gonzalez-Alonso admitted that is not his name. Gonzalez allegedly told detectives he used Nanez’s ID and social security to gain employment at Hormel. Nanez died in Missouri in 2008.

Police searched and found a Mexico Matricula card, Mexican license and bank cards under the name Gonzalez, along with a Hormel ID under the name Nanez.

Arson Investigation Man Set Fire to Stolen Car in Brazos County, TX

An 18-year-old Hearne man investigators believe is linked to the death of ex-councilman Charles Workman is in the Brazos County Jail, accused of arson in the burning of Workman’s vehicle last Sunday night on Old San Antonio Road.

Workman, 63, was found dead in his Hearne home on Monday with a gunshot wound to his head.

Investigators believe that Kevin Aundrell Godfrey set fire to Workman’s white 2000 Jaguar the day before Workman’s body was discovered.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

A probable cause statement for Godfrey’s arrest put him at the scene of the burning vehicle north of Texas 6 at Old San Antonio Road around 10:30 p.m. last Sunday when firefighters arrived.

Godfrey approached firefighters at the scene and requested that they give him a ride. He also approached a deputy at the scene and said that he had been left by his girlfriend at Denny’s Restaurant at Texas 6 and Harvey Mitchell Parkway and saw the emergency lights and thought he might get a ride, according to the statement.

Godfrey was arrested late Thursday night at the intersection of Dartmouth and Krenek Tap Road in College Station and booked into the Brazos County Jail early Friday morning.

Investigators spoke with a witness who said he had seen Godfrey with the Jaguar the night of Sept. 8 and that Godfrey had tried to sell the vehicle to him.

Investigators met with the witness again on Wednesday and were told that Godfrey had a gun in the waistband of his pants. Godfrey also told the witness that he had “just hit a lick,” meaning that he had robbed someone, according to the probable cause statement.

Police obtained further evidence on Wednesday of Godfrey’s connection to the burned vehicle from the Get-N-Go convenience store at Texas 21 and Harvey Mitchell Parkway in Bryan.

Security footage from the store on Sept. 8 showed a black male driving a white Jaguar at the location. Police identified the male as Godfrey and the vehicle as belonging to Workman.

An arson investigator with the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office determined that an accelerant was used in the interior of Workman’s Jaguar near or on the front passenger-side floorboard.

The Jaguar contained property belonging to Workman, including clothing, compact disks and paperwork, according to the probable cause statement.

Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk said Godfrey is a person of interest in the investigation of Workman’s death.

According to the Hearne Police Department, a preliminary autopsy indicated Workman’s death was a homicide.

Hearne detectives and Texas Rangers are investigating a link between Workman’s death and the arson.

Godfrey is charged with arson, a second-degree felony and is being held in the Brazos County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.

Insurance Fraud Rockland, MA Woman Charged with $28k

BOSTON —

A Rockland woman who ran a physical therapy business in Brockton has been indicted in connection with a scheme to fraudulently collect more than $28,000 in insurance payments.

Olga O’Connor Rich, 41, is charged with 46 counts of motor vehicle insurance fraud, four counts of larceny over $250, and three counts of attempted larceny.

“We allege that the defendant submitted fraudulent bills to insurance companies to collect for treatment that was never provided,” Attorney General Martha Coakley said in a statement released Friday.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Rich was the sole owner of South Coastal Physical Therapy in Brockton from 2001 through 2009. According to authorities, she used her position at the business to submit fraudulent physical therapy bills to several automobile insurance carriers. These “supplemental bills” were allegedly sent months or years after the initial billings were sent to the insurers for purported treatment that was never rendered, prosecutors contend.

According to authorities, Rich continued to submit the supplemental bills to insurers even after her business closed in December 2009. Authorities allege that Rich continued to make calls to insurers seeking reimbursement as recently as August 2011. Prosecutors say Rich submitted fraudulent bills totaling nearly $60,000 to insurance companies and received payments of more than $28,000 between August 2007 and August 2011.

A statewide grand jury returned indictments against Rich on Thursday. Rich will be arraigned in Plymouth Superior Court on a later
