Pedophile Tracking Pastor Sentenced to 330 Years in Prison

A US Christian pastor has been sentenced to a 330-year prison term for sexually assaulting five children between the ages of nine and 15 at his Los Angeles home.

The 69-year-old priest, identified as Oscar D. Perez, was sentenced Friday in a California court for abusing the children at his apartment near Los Angeles between 2007 and 2011, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Perez, an Apostolic pastor and bishop at a Laguna Hills Episcopalian Church, befriended various families at the church, recruited children to help with church services and invited his victims to his apartment, according to prosecutors.

He was detained and initially charged with assaulting two of the victims in September 2011 after one of the children told his mother of the abuse. Ensuing probes by police investigators led them to three more victims.

According to the report, the Christian preacher was found guilty in July on 22 felony charges of lewd acts upon a child under 14 years of age, among other felony counts of vulgar behavior against multiple victims.

Wrongful Death 2 Found Dead in Newark Motel, Including Missing Teen

The two people found dead inside a Newark motel were identified by Pleasanton police this evening as a missing teenage girl from Pleasanton and a Livermore man.

Pleasanton police would not release the name of either victim. They also would not confirm if the female victim was Patricia Martin, the 17-year-old who was reported missing on Monday by her mother.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

At 11:48 a.m. Friday, the Newark Police Department responded to the EZ8 Motel located at 5555 Cedar Court after employees reported an unconscious male and female inside a motel room.

The male and female had sustained gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. Newark police are investigating this incident as a murder-suicide or double suicide.

Pleasanton police said they were notified at 1:30 p.m. by Newark police about the bodies discovered in the motel.

Martin was listed as an “endangered runaway” by Pleasanton police early this week.

Friends on the social media site Tumblr said she attended Village High School.

Several left personal messages for her.

One person identified as ssammy wrote, “We miss you already baby, please please please come home.”

Another person identified as bubbletay wrote, “Please, please please spread and share this. We need to find her. We just want her home or… at least know she is safe.”

A Facebook page was also set up by some of Martin’s friends to help in the search for her.

The Pleasanton Police Department is working in cooperation with the Newark Police Department in this ongoing investigation.

Anyone with possible information related to this case is encouraged to call the Pleasanton Police Department at 925-931-5100.

Fraud Investigation 7 Charged in $17m Multistate Scheme

SACRAMENTO — A federal indictment unsealed Friday charged seven people with running a multistate Ponzi scheme and related mortgage fraud scams that prosecutors said cost investors and lenders a combined $17 million.

The years-long investigation resulted in the arrest of 55-year-old Lawrence Leland Loomis. He and his father-in-law, John Hagener, 76, were charged with operating a fraudulent California-based investment fund that cost more than 100 investors more than $7 million.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Both men are from Granite Bay, a wealthy Sacramento suburb.

They pleaded not guilty Friday in federal court in Sacramento. Loomis was ordered held, while Hagener was freed on $1 million bond.

Loomis and five other defendants are also charged in a 50-count indictment with costing lenders $10 million in losses through two mortgage fraud schemes.

Prosecutors said all three frauds were operated through Loomis Wealth Solutions, which was based in California and also worked with investors in Illinois, Washington and elsewhere from 2006 through 2008.

“We are bringing to justice some of those who are responsible for the mortgage crisis in this district and elsewhere,” U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner said in a statement announcing the indictments.

Hagener’s attorney, William Portanova, said the investigation was under way for at least four years before his client was charged.

“We’re looking forward to a resolution of this matter. It’s been a

long investigation, and we’re all ready to move forward,” Portanova said. “Large-scale, long-term, white-collar investigations are by their nature measured by calendars, not stopwatches.”

Assistant federal defender Douglas Beevers declined comment on behalf of Loomis. The other defendants did not appear in court Friday, and it was not immediately clear if they had retained attorneys.

Loomis and Hagener were charged with bilking investors through a program called Naras Funds in 2007 and 2008. The indictment said Loomis encouraged investors to tap their home equity and retirement accounts to buy shares in the funds and to help purchase residential real estate.

He called the investments “simply the best financial plan ever created,” according to prosecutors.

He and his father-in-law allegedly promised 12 percent annual returns and said the funds were guaranteed, but the indictment claims the men used investors’ money to pay themselves, their companies’ operating expenses, and to prop up the scheme by paying later investors with money from earlier victims.

Loomis and a real estate appraiser, Darren Fehst, 44, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, are also charged in connection with a mortgage fraud scheme, in which Loomis is accused of paying Fehst thousands of dollars to overstate appraisals so properties could be sold for inflated prices.

Loomis and four others also are charged with buying about 200 properties in Arizona, California, Florida and elsewhere while falsifying the sales prices and costing lenders about $10 million.

The others are Michael Llamas, 27, of Tracy; Peter Woodard, 54, of Ventura; Joseph A. Gekko, 43, of Yorba Linda; and Dawn C. Powers, 42, of Lincoln.

All are charged with mail and wire fraud. Each fraud charge carries a maximum possible sentence of 20 years in federal prison.

All seven defendants were ordered to appear in court Oct. 10.

Drug Dog Sweep $300k Worth of Opium

Authorities say a drug-detecting “wonder dog” helped federal agents uncover a shipment of opium-saturated decorative cloth from an international mail processing center near O’Hare International Airport.

Rogue, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, alerted authorities on Tuesday to the more than 28 pounds of narcotics-laden material, which had been shipped from Laos.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents said the drugs are valued at more than $300,000.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

“Rogue is a wonder dog in the international mail environment,” Steven Artino, Chicago’s acting CBP Director, said in a statement.

Artino said narcotic seizures from international mail are on the rise in the Chicago area. Rogue, he said, has now found more than 600 shipments of opium in Chicago, totaling more than $4 million.”

Rogue transferred to Chicago from Cincinnati last April. His fellow canines include German shepherds, Labradors and beagles.

CBP canines are trained to detect large amounts of currency, illegal narcotics, explosives, humans, or dangerous food and plant material, the agency said.

Another of those dogs in 2012 discovered more than 35 kilograms of opium-saturated twigs in a shipment that also came from Laos.

Arson Investigation Argyle Fire UPDATE

ARGYLE — Search warrants allege that a southwestern Wisconsin man accused of killing his three sons in a house fire last week hoped to collect $156,000 in insurance, a Madison television station reported Thursday.

The court documents allege that Armin Wand III told investigators he tried to kill his family in the fire to collect up to $100,000 on his wife and $10,000 on each of his four children’s life insurance policies, in addition to $16,000 on renter’s insurance, WKOW-TV reported.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

Wand, 32, and his 18-year-old brother, Jeremy Wand, face charges including first-degree intentional homicide and arson. In the criminal complaint, investigators allege that Armin Wand set his rented house in Argyle on fire in hopes of killing his family because his wife was complaining about money and he wanted a fresh start.

The complaint also alleges that Armin Wand told his brother to lock two of his sons in their room from the outside. The search warrants indicate that authorities took a doorknob with its lock assembly from the home.

Armin Wand’s three sons— 7-year-old Allen, 5-year-old Jeffery and 3-year-old Joseph — died in the Friday morning fire. His 27-year-old wife, Sharon Wand, lost her unborn baby and remained in critical condition Thursday at University of Wisconsin Hospital. Her family says the couple’s 2-year-old daughter, Jessica Wand, is healthy and safe.

Phone messages left Thursday evening at the offices of Armin and Jeremy Wands’ attorneys were not immediately returned. The brothers remained in jail Thursday, with bail for each man set at more than $1 million. Their preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 13.
