Private Investigator Given Tip on Possible Location of Missing Person

An anonymous tip has sparked a new search for a 14-year-old Massachusetts girl who disappeared 23 years ago, according to reports.

Melanie Melanson vanished in October 1989 after partying with high school friend in some woods on the outskirts of Woburn, some 25 minutes north of Boston.

Investigators believed she was killed, but a body was never found and no suspects were named.

Sources told FoxNews.com that an anonymous New Hampshire man recently told a private investigator working for the missing girl’s family that her remains might be in Middlesex Fells Reservation in nearby Stoneham.

The man claimed some teens who were partying with Melanson the night she disappeared were later spotted at the 2,500-acre state park, Fox reported.

The tipster was said to be an old friend of some of the teens.

The investigator, Michael Garrigan, who has been searching for the girl since 1991, said volunteers and cadaver dogs were set to search a section of the park on Saturday, Fox Newsreported.

The Middlesex County district attorney’s office said the Woburn Police Department would help with the search.

“We’re hopeful that we can find Melanie and give her the proper burial that she deserves,” Jessica Pastore, a DA spokeswoman, told Fox News.

According to Melanson’s family, Melanie was last seen with two boys around her age in a wooded hangout popular with local teens sometime before dawn on Oct. 28, 1989.

The two boys were questioned by police, but they were never charged.

In 2009, the district attorney announced a $5,000 reward for information that might help solve the case.

Melanson, a high school freshman, was just five days shy of her 15th birthday when she disappeared.

Identity Theft Hospital Worker Used Dead Patient’s Credit Cards

A Florida hospital employee used a dead patient’s credit card information to purchase plane tickets, buy shoes and pay off her phone bill, police said.

Margaret Nunn, 53, who works as a patient registration representative, was arrested Wednesday on one count of identity theft and seven counts of credit card fraud.

Police said Nunn admitted stealing from the unidentified 63-year-old victim, who died in the emergency room at Sarasota Memorial Hospital on June 10.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

“Within hours after his death his three credit cards were used to purchase airline tickets, bridal shoes, pay phone bills and other assorted items totaling over $1186.00,” Sarasota police said in a statement.

Detectives worked with the hospital’s public safety office to identify Nunn as a suspect, police said.

She was suspended from her job and was later terminated on June 29, said Kim Savage, spokeswoman for Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

“It was an isolated individual,” Savage said. “In this case she just wrote down the information while she was registering the patient.”

The hospital routinely conducts audits to ensure that employees are only accessing patient information for legitimate reasons, Savage said.

Nunn is being held at Sarasota County Jail and has a $10,000 bond.

Pedophile Tracking Andrew Fishback of Lexington

Investigators raided a house in a Lexington neighborhood near several schools Thursday, arresting a man on several child pornography charges.

State Police said Andrew Fishback was taken into custody following a 3-month long investigation, in which they found the 22-year-old was engaging in illegal activity.

LEX 18’s camera were rolling just after noon, as Andrew Fishback was escorted out of his house and into a police cruiser.

Investigators from several agencies removed concealed items from the home, which officials said he shared with his grandmother.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Fishback was charged with three counts of possessing child pornography and one count of distributing it. Officials told LEX 18, they could have continued the investigation and brought more charges immediately, but because the home is right next to Lafayette High School and the School for the Creative and Performing Arts, they wanted to arrest Fishback as quickly as they could.

“I think it’s ridiculous because we’ve always had a great neighborhood,” said Arminda Maxwell, who told LEX 18, she’s known Fishback since he was a child. “The school kids park down our street and walk down that way all the time, every morning… and I hope [Fishback] doesn’t live on our street any longer.”

Investigators said they have seized Fishback’s computer and will search it for any more child pornography. State Police said more charges against Fishback are likely.

Identity Theft Eric Chistian Trys to Open Account in Brothers Name

If at first Eric Christian didn’t succeed in identity theft by trying to open a bank account in his brother Thomas’ name, he tried, tried again—10 times since Dec. 27, according to Darien police.

According to the police account, the tenth time was a charm—for law enforcement.

Darien police gave this account of the matter:

At one area bank after another for the past seven months or so, Eric Christian, 28, of Amber Drive, Norwalk, tried to open a bank account, claiming to be his brother, Thomas. Each time, bank employees refused him.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

By Jan. 24, a Bank of Darien employee told police a man was trying to open a fraudulent checking account under Thomas Christian’s name. The bank had received notice for that name since the real Thomas Christian was known to be a victim of identity theft. The man left the bank after the employee refused to open an account for him.

A police investigation determined that the person trying to open bank accounts in Thomas’ name was his brother, Eric. Police didn’t say how they determined that.

Eric Christian had been arrested previously on charges including identity theft, criminal impersonation, larceny and violation of probation.

At some point, police applied for and received a warrant for Eric Christian’s arrest on identity theft and second-degree forgery charges.

Police eventually caught up with Eric Christian when they received a call from Jail authorities telling him that Christian was there. He was being held after an arrest on an unrelated charge.

On Saturday, police took Christian into custody, processed his arrest and released him on a $50,000 bond. Christian is to appear July 31 in state Superior Court in Stamford.

Pedophile Tracking Pedophiles Turn to Identity Theft

Convicted sex offenders are trying to slip undetected back into society by changing or altering their names and identities, a new study found.

Roughly one in six convicted sex offenders have adopted techniques usually used by identity thieves to avoid mandatory tracking and monitoring by law enforcement, researchers at Utica College said Thursday.

Some of the identity manipulation methods include adopting multiple aliases; using various social security numbers or dates of birth; stealing ID information from friends and family; altering physical their appearance and moving to states with less stringent laws.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

In one of the most alarming cases cited by the research, 29-year-old convicted sex offender Neil Rodreick enrolled in charter schools in Arizona posing as a 12-year-old boy in 2007.

Rodreick worked with three other men who played the parts of family members and was admitted to at least four schools under the name of Casey Price, The New York Times reported.

To carry off the group’s fiendish plans, Price shaved off all of his body hair, wore makeup and a baseball cap and rode a skateboard.

He was able to keep up the ruse for four months in the one town, Surprise.

Convicted sex offender Neil Rodreick posed as a 12-year-old boy at four schools in Arizona.

Rodreick’s charade was so complex that he actually did his homework while an “uncle” attended the school’s curriculum night.

The scheme finally unraveled in January 2007 at the Mingus Springs Charter School. Administrators were immediately suspicious when Rodreick tried to enroll.

“The person posing as the child obviously looked older than 12,” the school’s director, Dawn Gonzales told the Times.

When the pervert’s paperwork didn’t check out, the jig was up.

Cases like Rodreick’s mean “the management and control of known sex offenders has become a national, state and local priority,” said Dr. Donald Rebovich, who spearheaded the Justice Department-funded study.

Researchers said knowing what techniques sex offenders use to evade detection will help law enforcement officials keep better track of them.

Though the results were still preliminary, the study found that 16.2 percent of sex offenders manipulate their identities nationally, but some states, including Louisiana, Nevada and Delaware, saw absconder rates as high as 25 percent.

Private Detective Police Arrest 1 of 2 Shooting Suspects

Police in Mercer County said Thursday that they have taken one of two men who may have fired at deputies during a dispute between neighbors Wednesday night into custody.

Deputies say they responded to the report of a disorder at a home along Battlefield Road, just north of Perryville, around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. As deputies arrived, two men ran out of the house firing shots. Deputies say they don’t know if the suspects, Kenneth Ray Cook, 34, and Ashley Robin Sparks, 34, were firing at them or just into the air.

http://liarcatchers.com/index.php

“Whether in the air or in the ground, there is still intent to put fear in us and make us think we’re being shot at, even though they’re not actually shooting at us. It does make for a serious situation,” Scott Elder with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office said.

The duo ran into a nearby cornfield. Kentucky State Police and deputies searched the area and later went to a trailer about two miles away when authorities got a tip the two men might head there. After about six hours, there was still no sign of the suspects.

On Thursday morning, police say they arrested Cook. They are continuing an active search for Sparks.

Pedophile Tracking Duane Chavez Pleaded Guilty

ALBUQUERQUE—This morning, Duane Chavez, 27, of Los Lunas, New Mexico, entered a guilty plea to an information charging him with access with intent to view a visual depiction of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct under a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, announced U.S. Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Chavez will be sentenced to 36 months of imprisonment, to be followed by a term of supervised release to be determined by the sentencing judge. The plea agreement also requires that Chavez register as a sex offender after he completes his prison sentence. Chavez was remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service after entering his guilty plea. He will remain detained pending his sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.

The information to which Chavez pleaded guilty charged Chavez with knowingly accessing child pornography with the intention of viewing it between January 2011 and March 7, 2012, in Valencia County. At the time of the offense, Chavez was employed as a prison transport officer by the New Mexico Corrections Department.

According to the plea agreement, in January 2012, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) began an undercover investigation aimed at identifying those who possess, receive, and distribute child pornography. After the investigation revealed that an IP address subscribed to Chavez’s residence was participating in the distribution of child pornography, investigators with the New Mexico Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force executed a search warrant at Chavez’s residence on March 7, 2012, and seized a computer and computer-related media.

In his plea agreement, Chavez admitted that, while the search warrant was executed, he voluntarily participated in a recorded interview with ICAC Task Force officers during which he admitted that he used a file sharing program to download child pornography. Chavez also acknowledged that a forensic examination of his computer and computer-related media revealed 15 files containing child pornography, including an image of a child who has been identified as a child pornography victim and has been rescued.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Charlyn E. Rees is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the Los Lunas Police Department, the NMSP, Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the New Mexico Corrections Department, and the New Mexico Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory. Chavez was charged as part of Operation Artemis, an investigative effort by federal, state, and local law enforcement affiliates of the New Mexico ICAC Task Force aimed at identifying individuals throughout New Mexico involved in the distribution, receipt, and possession of child pornography through peer-to-peer file sharing programs.

In March 2012, federal, state, and local law enforcement officers executed 13 unrelated federal and state search warrants at residences throughout New Mexico and seized computers and computer-related evidence related to child pornography offenses. To date, five individuals have been arrested for violating federal and state child pornography laws based on the search warrants executed as part of Operation Artemis. The law enforcement agencies that participated in Operation Artemis include Homeland Security Investigations, NMSP, New Mexico Attorney General’s Office, FBI, Albuquerque Police Department, Los Lunas Police Department, Santa Fe Police Department, Rio Rancho Police Department, and the New Mexico Regional Computer Forensic Lab.

Operation Artemis was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and DOJ’s Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit http://www.justice.gov/psc/.

The Operation also was brought as a part of the New Mexico ICAC Task Force’s mission, which is to locate, track, and capture Internet child sexual predators and Internet child pornographers in New Mexico. There are 61 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies associated with the ICAC Task Force, which is funded by a grant administered by the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office. Anyone with information relating to suspected child predators and suspected child abuse is encouraged to contact federal or local law enforcement.

Pedophile Tracking Teacher Busted in Child Sex Sting

New tapes released by the state attorney’s office show detectives interviewing a private Christian school teacher and Episcopal priest after he was arrested for soliciting a minor for sex.

Brian Shriner told an investigator he went online to meet the girl because he was doing research for a novel.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Shriner: When she showed me some of the pictures, they made me uncomfortable because she looked so young. And the whole idea of her being 14.
Investigator: She was 14.
Shriner: I know. Oh my God, I swear, I don’t know how to let you know that I would never…

“I realize the level of stupidity of what I’ve done today,” Shriner told the investigator.

Investigator: You’re trying to say that the whole thing was just a research program for a novel.
Shriner: I am and I know that sounds ridiculous.
Investigator: It does.
Shriner: Oh my God, this is going to be a nightmare, then.

Investigators continued to question Shriner about why he allegedly sought out underage girls.

Investigator: So what you’re trying to say, you as the writer, got online, you subjected yourself, made a yahoo account. Get online, purposely waited until you found an underage girl.
Shriner: I talked to several of them. Didn’t meet any of them. This girl, she clearly had said, I have done things before.

Shriner told investigators he just wanted to talk.

Shriner: You notice that I told her I wasn’t going to meet her unless we were just going to chill out and talk.
Investigator: Talk and then if more happens, then more happens. And you said, ‘OK.’
Shriner: Because I wasn’t planning, I was just planning on sitting and talking with her. I know this sounds crazy.

But the investigator continued to press.

Investigator: So what sex acts were you talking about?
Shriner: I don’t because honestly, I didn’t intend to do any of them.

And still continued.

Investigator: What did you think was going to happen when you got there?
Shriner: Today? I thought we would sit down and I’d ask her questions…
Investigator: About what?
Shriner: Like, why does she prefer older men, has she ever done anything like this before?

Finally, the investigator summed up his questioning.

Investigator: Let me ask you this. Even if you showed up today, and you didn’t intend to have sex with her, which we’ve gone back and forth…
Shriner: I would have been so scared…
Investigator: Don’t you think that… hold on… don’t you think that it would be illegal to talk to a 14-year-old on a computer and ask her to have sex with you?
Shriner: Yeah, but somehow it doesn’t even seem like it’s real.

Shriner told the investigator he has four daughters, ranging in age from 12 to 22.

He pleaded not guilty Tuesday to traveling to meet a minor for sex, solicitation of a minor via computer and lewd or lascivious battery.

Shriner is out of jail on bond.

His trial is scheduled to begin on Oct. 15.
