Cold Case John Clark Russel Arrested

On March 11 1979, 23 year old Alma Zuniga was fatally shot and stabbed.

The 23 year old’s remains were found in a shallow grave in an El Rio agriculture field off North Rose Avenue.

Members of the Ventura County Cold Case Homicide Task Force say DNA from a criminal data base helped them solve the case.

With assistance from Bakersfield Police, officers arrested 63 year old John Clark Russel outside a gym Thursday and served a search warrant at his Bakersfield home.

After the murder, Zuniga’s toddler son moved to New Mexico to be raised by his grandmother.

By phone Jaime Zuniga said he was shocked, and relieved.

Jaime Zuniga says his Mother moved to Oxnard with him after his parents split up.

But the day she was murdered they were trying to work things out on the telephone.

His mother was on a payphone outside a bar talking long distance to his father in Oklahoma.

His father told him that he had heard the attack on his mother and had called 9-1-1.

Zuniga says he has overcome a lot.

Zuniga says relatives suspected his father at first.

But his father wasn’t in California at the time of the murder.

Years ago he reunited with his father in Mexico and then found out his father was murdered in Mexico after his half brother was kidnapped.

Zuniga is raising a family and now studying to be a physical therapist.

Jaime Zuniga says his mother would have turned 57 tomorrow, July 28th.

Anyone with information about this cold case or others is urged to call Detective Sergeant Rhodes at (805)384-4724 or Ventura County Crime Stoppers at 1(800)-222-TIPS(8477)

Missing Person Samantha Weaver of Shawnee

SHAWNEE — Police are not confident a missing Shawnee woman is still alive, although her mother says she has not given up hope. Samantha Weaver, 27, was reported missing on June 15.

“I’m going to believe she’s alive until there’s proof she isn’t,” said Leona Dohren, 62, of Wisner, Neb. “I’m her mother, and it’s too horrible to think anything else.”

Shawnee police detective Ron Wilson said Weaver had gone to a casino in Norman with friends. She left with a man she knew, who said he dropped Weaver off two blocks from a house in Shawnee.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Weaver sent a text message to the father of her two daughters on June 15, saying she would be at his house “in a bit,” but she never showed up. He reported her missing, Wilson said.

“For a young mother not to have contact with her kids for this long — something is not right,” Wilson said. “I don’t think she’s alive or she would have made contact with someone by now.”

Wilson said records show her cellphone hasn’t been used since the day she went missing.

Dohren said Weaver would not have abandoned her daughters, ages 2 and 6. Weaver and the girls’ father had separated. The children live with their father, but were with Weaver during the day while he worked.

Weaver telephoned her mother on her birthday about a week before she was reported missing.

“She talked about the future — getting a home for her and the girls and getting a job,” Dohren said.

Weaver also wouldn’t have left her father. The two had a standing weekly lunch date and spoke daily, she said.

Weaver is an amateur artist and poet who carried sketch pads and notepads with her wherever she went. Her notebooks were found in the home of the man who claims to have dropped her off the night she disappeared, her mother said.

“She’s basically a good kid who may have gotten messed up with the wrong people,” Dohren said.

Wilson agrees.

“It was likely someone she knew. She had been running with a pretty rough crowd,” Wilson said.

He said he has interviewed a couple of people who may be connected with Weaver’s disappearance, but police continue to search for evidence that could lead to an arrest.

Weaver is 5-foot-4, weighs about 115 pounds and has brown eyes and light brown hair.

Anyone with information can call Wilson at 273-2121.

Missing Person David John Goeser of UCLA

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles police are searching for a University of California Los Angeles honors student who has been missing for more than four days.

Officials say 22-year-old David John Goeser’s 2001 white Toyota Corolla was found late Wednesday in the Pacific Palisades, where authorities are searching for clues in thick vegetation Thursday. Officers on horseback and aided by hound dogs are combing mountain trails for signs of him.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Goeser was last seen by his roommates at his home and family members had not heard from him in over a week when they went to the home to look for him.

Police say they discovered the English major’s cellphone, identification and credit cards at the home.

Family members tell police that he is under a doctor’s care and needs regular medication.

Wrongful Death Family Sues After Man Falls From Bridge

Bernard Burrows, a 58-year-old bridge mechanic at CSX Transportation, fell to his death when he tried to urinate off a bridge that he was working on. In their lawsuit, the family claims that CSX failed to provide portable toilets for the workers, forcing them to urinate and defecate off the bridge, reports the Philadelphia Daily News.

As Burrows went to relieve himself, he allegedly fell through a large hole on the bridge that was covered by an unsecured platform. He fell 90 feet to his death.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

In the wrongful death action, Burrows’ family will likely have to claim that CSX was negligent or engaged in misconduct in not providing toilets for its employees. Regardless of where someone works, it should be reasonable to expect that employees be given a place to relieve themselves. You would imagine that this would be especially true when the employees are working on a bridge or other dangerous area.

It wasn’t reported what damages the surviving family members are seeking, but they can typically seek recovery for loss of support, services, lost prospect of inheritance, and funeral expenses. A court will consider the victims’ age, his earning capacity, and financial circumstances of his family members in issuing its award.

Along with the wrongful death lawsuit, CSX transportation could also face a separate OSHA action for providing an unsafe workplace for its employees. Employers almost always have to provide a restroom for their employees, and forcing employees to urinate off a bridge is probably not acceptable.

Cold Case Police Solved 2 with DNA

State police have solved cold cases involving Kenneth LaManna, of Waterbury, who was last seen on May 16, 1980, and Phat Quy Mai.

Phat Quy Mai was struck and killed by a car on Interstate 91 in Meriden in September 2008.

Investigators couldn’t identify him at the time, but the state police missing person’s unit was able to connect with a Massachusetts family looking for their relative. Within weeks, the DNA was a match.

http://liarcatchers.com/cold_cases.html

LaManna was a missing person case. He was 31 when he was reported missing. He was found in Waterbury in 1981. Police said he committed suicide.

According to the National Missing Person’s Database, LaManna’s mother saw him last when she left for work 32 years ago.

It wasn’t until the missing person’s unit got the case that Waterbury police were finally able to identify LaManna after taking a DNA sample from LaManna’s elderly mother in Pennsylvania.

“Everybody working together for one family to get an answer to what happened. And it really brings forth an answer to the question that keeps many of these families up at night,” said Michelle Cruz, a victim’s advocate.

One of the biggest weapons investigators have is the Web site for the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

The public can look up missing people and work with the state’s new unit to find answers.

There are more than 20 local unsolved cases.

“If you think that you may have some information on any case, please call us. As you can see, that help can bring closure to families right here in our state of Connecticut,” said Lt. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police.

Officials believe the majority of the skimming devices were installed inside gas pump panels.

Opening the panels did not disrupt service or trigger any alarms; and it only took seconds to install the skimming devices.

The devices were undetectable from the outside and were only noticeable when the panels were opened.

Detectives are notifying banks and their customers of the stolen credit card numbers and ask that gas station operators check all their equipment.

If a skimmer is found, operators are advised to not touch or remove the device, and contact local law enforcement.

Each suspect is being held pending bail of $2,000,000 or more.

Wrongful Death Man Kills WIfe for $1M in Insurance

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Authorities say a Columbia man killed his wife to get $1 million in insurance money, then killed his partner in an illegal gambling business to try to pin the homicide on him.

Prosecutors revealed more details about the April killings at an upscale suburban Columbia home just before a judge denied bond for 42-year-old Brett Parker during a hearing Thursday. Parker was charged last week with two counts of murder.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Prosecutors say Parker was $600,000 in debt and was having two affairs when he killed his 44-year-old wife, Tammy. Authorities say Parker then used a second gun to kill his gambling business partner, 46-year-old Bryan Capnerhurst.

Parker’s attorney calls the accusations by prosecutors ridiculous and says Parker killed Capnerhurst in self-defense after Capnerhurst killed his wife.

Missing Person Darrold Bendush

KALKASKA — A search began today in Kalkaska for a 76 year old man named Darrold Bendush. He’s been missing for the past two days, and officials believe some legal issues may be the reason Bendush left.

The Kalkaska Police Deptartment has teamed up with the Michigan Deptartment of Corrections and local K-9 units to search for the man. They are using GPS tracking technology to grid search for him.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Officials searched a two to three mile area around Bendush’s last known location, a McDonald’s, near a storage unit he owns, and throughout a 40-acre wooded property near Kalkaska.

Officials have also entered him into a national database for voluntarily missing individuals.

The Kalkaska Police Sergeant, Glenn Artress, stated, “There’s nothing that says Mr. Bendush is an endangered person. He left on his own free will, he’s not dependant on any meds, he’s not dependant on oxygen. Mr. Bendush is actually a pretty stable individual.”

Bendush is about 6’3″ and 180 pounds with blue eyes and sandy blonde hair. He has a scar on his face. If you see this man you’re asked to call the Kalkaska Police.
