Wrongful Death Body Found in Wooded Area is Missin 15 yr old

MARRERO, La. — The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of a body in Marrero. Deputies made the discovery in a wooded area in the 1200 block of Robinson Ave, near Barataria Boulevard.

An autopsy Saturday confirmed the body was missing Marrero boy, 15-year-old Allard Winfield. Winfield had been shot multiple times, according to the JPSO.

Around 6 p.m. Friday, deputies searched the area around Johnny Jacobs playground, looking for Winfield who has been since earlier this week but were unsuccessful, according to JPSO spokesman Col. John Fortunato.

About an hour later, authorities were called to the Robinson Avenue location. The aunt and uncle of the missing boy asked deputies to search the wooded area for their missing nephew, said a statement from Fortunato.

“(A)round 7:52 p.m. our officers located the body of a male subject lying in a drainage ditch behind 1244 Robinson Ave. The body appeared to be that of a young black male who appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds,” said a statement from Fortunato.

Due to the condition of the body the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office was unable to confirm the identity as the missing teenager, according to Fortunato. An autopsy later determined the identity of the body as well as the cause of death.

Accident Reconstruction 5 Dead in Queens Accident

Five people were killed, including two children, after leaving a Nigerian heritage celebration in Queens early Sunday when their speeding SUV, swerving after blowing through two red lights, slammed into a concrete pillar, rolled over and burst into flames, police and witnesses said.

The dead included Nnenna Obioha, 57, of Michigan, who helped organize the convention and was the founding president of immigrant group Arondizuogu Daughters Association, relatives said. Emergency workers said the crash of the black Mercedes-Benz SUV was one of the most horrific wrecks in recent memory.

“This is the worst single-car accident I’ve gone to in my career,” said Chief Stephen Browne, a 26-year FDNY veteran. “To see this much human life devastation in a single-car accident on a side street is not normal.”

The 45-year-old driver, whose name was not released but who hails from the Bronx, was barreling east on Atlantic Ave. when she slammed into one of the pillars that support the AirTrain to Kennedy Airport.

Authorities clear an automobile involved in a single-vehicle crash that took the lives of five people, including two children, near the Van Wyck Expressway on Sunday.

Firefighters went to work extricating three victims with the Jaws of Life while simultaneously putting out the engine fire. They pulled two boys, ages 7 and 9, from the rear window of the burning SUV, but a 9-year-old boy died at the scene. An 8-year-old girl who was thrown from the vehicle was found dead on the ground about 10 feet from the SUV.

Three women died in the crash. One woman was found dead still wearing her seat belt in the front passenger seat. Another victim was thrown from the SUV and pinned underneath it, officials said. Many of the eight passengers did not appear to be wearing seat belts, officials said, and the SUV is designed to carry no more than seven people.

There were no immediate charges against the driver, who had a clean and valid license, cops said.

The driver, her 7-year-old son and a 26-year-old man who ended up outside the vehicle survived the crash and were taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition.

The driver was in emergency surgery Sunday afternoon, while the man was set to be released, a hospital spokesman said. The boy was being treated in the pediatric emergency room.

A motorist traveling north on the service road of the Van Wyck Expressway said he had a green light and was crossing the intersection at Atlantic Ave. when the 2008 SUV nearly hit him.

“All I saw was headlights,” said Ryan Jardine, 24. “She ran the light, almost hit us and then hit the pole. She swerved to avoid impacting us. We saw the car just hit the pole, and it went into a somersault. It just started flipping. It was horrible.”

The victims had just left a party at the Golden Terrace banquet hall on Atlantic Ave. in Richmond Hill celebrating the conclusion of the two-day annual convention of immigrants from the Nigerian town of Arondizuogu.

“The convention was supposed to bring us together — not end in tragedy,” said Anthony Nwankwo, 49, of Houston, who attended the festival.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The victims, who are all related, were heading to a home in the Bronx to sleep, relatives said.

“Nobody’s coping,” association President Obioha’s cousin Evelyn Anyaogu, 68, said of the tragedy. “It’s not one dead. It’s not two, three, four (but) five.”

Drug Dog Sweep 857 lbs of marijuana Found on Bus

EL PASO — Some buses from Mexico are carrying more than passengers on vacation or a weekend shopping spree. Smugglers are using the buses to bring drugs into the U.S., and the bigger the vehicle, the larger the load of drugs.

“There are a lot more compartments in a bus than a car,” said Joe Raigosa, a Customs and Border Protection officer, as he waited for a bus to pull up to the border checkpoint at the Bridge of the Americas in El Paso.

“Most of the people who traffic drugs into the United States will use areas you just don’t have in a car — like a commode,” Raigosa explained.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

Last Friday, CBP officers in El Paso found 857 pounds of marijuana in a secret compartment near the sleeping cab of the bus. A drug-sniffing dog discovered the stash.

That’s a large haul, but it’s not surprising, said Frank Chavez, a Customs and Border Protection officer. “We’ve had seizures about that size before,” he noted.

Buses pose a special challenge for customs officers who must search the vehicle and also screen the passengers and luggage.

“Not only are the passengers searched, but the buses themselves are searched with canines, X-rays if necessary, and physical examination by our officers,” Chavez said.

In the El Paso area, officers are finding buses carrying drugs, but the size of the loads is larger than in past years.

Along the Southwest border in 2010, CBP officers found 59 separate buses carrying 3,809 pounds of illegal drugs.

The following year there were 42 buses loaded with 5,587 pounds of drugs. And so far this year, officers have seized 34 buses with 4,310 pounds of drugs — mostly marijuana.

“It’s good they’re doing safety checks,” said Gabriela Romero, a passenger traveling from Celaya, Guanajuato to Denver to visit her daughter.

Buses still have to go through highway checkpoints on the way to other U.S. cities, but some clearly make it beyond the border with drugs on board.

Just last month, a Montgomery County sheriff’s deputy and his drug-sniffing dog Ranger discovered a million dollars worth of cocaine and heroin on a bus traveling from Houston to Chicago.

After passing through security at the border, Romero and the other passengers loaded their suitcases in the luggage compartment, boarded the bus, and continued their journey on Interstate 10.

CBP agents expect the biggest surge in buses crossings at the border Thursday through Saturday, when visitors from Mexico travel to Texas to shop. Officer Raigosa said agents will examine 15 to 18 buses on those days.

Drug Dog Sweep Two Arrested in Montgomery County with Heroine

WINTHROP, N.Y. — Two men are arrested in Montgomery County after deputies discover 13 bundles of heroine in their car during a traffic stop. Raymond Russell, 26, of Oneonta, and Arthur Lynch of Winthrop, Massachusetts were both arrested on drug charges.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department said they received a report of the two men behaving suspiciously in a car in the village of Palatine Bridge. They found the car driving down Lafayette Street, swerving along the road.

Deputies said once the car was stopped, they brought in a dog to search the car. That’s when police said the canine found 13 package of heroine, money with drug residue on it, and other drug paraphernalia. Russell was also charged with a DWI.

Arson Investigation 20 Fires in 2 Weeks in Stockton, CA

STOCKTON, CA – Firefighters believe the 20 fires that broke out in the past two weeks in the Mormon Slough area of Stockton were arson.

On Saturday, someone set three of those fires. On Sunday, there were two more fires around Hazelton Avenue and Stanlislaus Street.

Those fires are taxing Stockton fire crews.

“Grassfires like that take rigs out for a long time,” Battalion Chief Mike Lilienthal said. “There are lots of hotspots. With the high temperatures, we can’t leave until it’s under control and safe.”

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

As they battle those fires, they continue to fight house fires, like the one on Wallace Avenue and Princeton Street on Sunday.

“Almost half the engines in Stockton are committed right now to either the Mormon Slough or to this structure fire,” Lilienthal said.

Triple digit temperatures have also exhausted firefighters. One firefighter was treated on scene for heat exhaustion during Sunday’s house fire. On Saturday, another firefighter in the Mormon Slough area was hurt when a glass bottle exploded.
