Drug Dog Sweep NC Man Jailed After Drug Dog Died

NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina man whose hidden cocaine was found by a police dog that bit into the package and died has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.

Federal prosecutors said a judge Friday ordered 33-year-old Jamie Gonzalez-Lopez to spend 135 months behind bars. He pleaded guilty to several drug charges.

Authorities say undercover federal agents ordered a kilogram of cocaine from Gonzalez-Lopez in July 2011. Gonzalez-Lopez then hid the drugs in a Brunswick County field while waiting to meet the “buyer.”

Agents arrested Gonzalez-Lopez, and a sheriff’s drug-sniffing Belgian Malinois named Viper was sent into the field to find the drugs. Viper accidentally bit into the package and bit and shook it, ingesting a fatal amount of cocaine.

More than 200 people turned out for a memorial service for the dog.

Fraud Investigation Daniel Garcia Possible Ringleader

FOX 2 NEWS cameras were at the scene last night as a laundry list of high quality goods were pulled from a trio of McAllen apartments and it’s allegedly involving a month’s long case of credit card fraud.
Big screen TV’s, plush leather couches, brand new golf clubs and even a black hummer, along with many other top quality goods were pulled from a trio of apartments near the corner of 23rd and Redbud.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html
The McAllen Police Department, with the aid of McAllen Public Works spent the better part of Tuesday evening hauling the goods onto trucks to be carted away as evidence.
A member of the McAllen Police Department, told FOX 2 NEWS, off camera that this may be related to a credit card fraud and abuse case that they’ve been following for months
And it’s these high priced purchases that had caused neighbors to take notice.
It is believed to be a credit card fraud ring which brought about the arrest of this man, Daniel Garcia, believed to be the ringleader.
He will be serving 2 years in prison and forced to pay $74,000 in restitution.
No word yet on if more arrests will follow.
And although one arrest has been made, which may or may not be directly involved with the case, a member of the McAllen Police Department did inform us, off camera and with the amount of goods involved, that this is an ongoing investigation.

Identity Theft Scam BBB Warns

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — A scam that hit much of the country in June has now reached utility customers in Alabama, natural gas company Alagasco and the Better Business Bureau of Central Alabama said today.

According to a BBB spokeswoman, Alagasco and media accounts from other states, scammers have been going door-to-door and using text messages, social media and handbills to solicit personal data such as social security numbers. The scammers claim that a grant program authorized by President Barack Obama will pay their utility bills, if they provide the personal data.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

The Better Business Bureau of Central Alabama has received “dozens” of reports of the scam in greater Birmingham, an operator said.

The scam is believed to be in support of identity theft.

“In some cases, scammers have asked for social security numbers in order to allow for credits toward or to apply payments to customers’ bills. This scam represents an identity theft risk,” Energen said in a prepared statement.

Utilities urged customers to call police and the Better Business Bureau requested if they encounter the scam.

Alagasco said customers should exercise caution and note that its employees carry proper identification and do not go to customers’ homes and ask for social security numbers.

Arson Investigation in Grace Chapel Fires

The neighbors don’t think the fires that destroyed a pair of mobile homes were an accident – neither does the Caldwell County Fire Marshal.

Fire Marshal Robbie Wilkie has announced that the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office is searching for suspects in the most recent fire to break out at 4779 Rock Creek Circle. Neighbors reported the fire just before 2 a.m. on Friday morning. Investigators think the trailer fire is related to a fire that destroyed a second trailer on the property about two weeks ago.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

Tim Annis lives across the street from the two burned-out trailers in the Grace Chapel area of Caldwell County. He was the man who called 911 to report the first fire after he spotted flames at about 11:30 p.m. on June 24.

“I saw really bad smoke and when I kept looking, I saw fire,” Annis said. “By the time the firefighters got here it was fully-involved.”

The blaze gutted the trailer.

“The flames were mostly coming up out of the roof in the middle,” said Gail Hilton who lives beside the burned trailers. “I sat out on the porch and watched it burn.”

The second fire burned for a longer time before it was called in. That’s why the second trailer was almost leveled and the first one still has its exterior walls up, Annis said.

Both of the homes were rental property owned by Ronald Franklin of South Carolina. Both trailers were vacant at the time of the fires. Neither trailer had electricity when they burned.

Neighbors suspected that drug dealing or other activities were being conducted in the homes before the tenants were evicted – but the possible arson was unexpected.

“I didn’t think they would set the house on fire, and I was shocked when the second one burned,” Annis said, adding that Rock Creek Circle is a peaceful neighborhood where neighbors treat each other with respect.

Hilton said the people who rented Franklin’s trailers had worked hard to improve them. They’d put in new floors and waterlines while keeping their yards nicer than Franklin ever had. But she, too, was worried that illegal activities may have been happening there.

“I hate that he lost his trailers, but he should have known the kind of people he had in there,” she said. “If he wants to sell that land, I’d consider buying it so I could decide who lives there.”

Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call the Caldwell County Fire Marshal’s Office at 757-1280.

Insurance Fraud New Law in Florida

Three new measures and anti-fraud auto insurance laws will be included among 150 new regulations in Florida, in a part of the state’s efforts to crack down on a serious scam problem with their personal injury protection (PIP) laws.
The changes take direct aim at the way that auto insurance functions within the state.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

The PIP coverage has been in place in Florida since 1972. Since that time, all drivers in Florida have been required to take out coverage that will pay for anyone who is injured in an accident, which will provide payments that will allow those individuals to receive the treatment they need without delay. The minimum allowable coverage requires the insurer to pay up to $10,000 toward the lost wages and medical bills of injured parties, no matter who caused the accident.
Though is program is designed to ensure victims of accidents can always afford medical treatment, fraud abounds.

According to state officials, fraudulent claims and staged accidents have been responsible for a significant amount of the $1.4 billion increase in the cost of PIP since 2008. The new auto insurance law, however, places a 14 day limit on seeking treatment following the time of the accident.

Another change to the system is that there is now a cap of $2,500 on benefits unless an “emergency medical condition” is declared by a doctor, dentist, osteopathic physician, supervised assistant of a physician, or advanced registered nurse practitioner. It will not be possible for chiropractors to determine that this situation is present. The same can be said about massage therapists and acupuncturists.

Though this is meant to ensure that the only people who are receiving the auto insurance payouts are those who actually require medical services, many chiropractors, acupuncturists and massage therapists are concerned that this will mean that many people who have been legitimately injured and can benefit from their services will hesitate to do so as they will be required to pay for them out of their own pockets. This could be hard business for these providers and may limit the forms of treatment available to accident victims.

Cyber Investigation DNS Changer Malware

What is the DNS Changer Malware?

On November 8, the FBI, the NASA-OIG and Estonian police arrested several cyber criminals in “Operation Ghost Click”. The criminals operated under the company name “Rove Digital”, and distributed DNS changing viruses, variously known as TDSS, Alureon, TidServ and TDL4 viruses. You can read more about the arrest of the Rove Digital principals here, and in the FBI Press Release.

http://liarcatchers.com/cyber_investigations.html
What does the DNS Changer Malware do?

The botnet operated by Rove Digital altered user DNS settings, pointing victims to malicious DNS in data centers in Estonia, New York, and Chicago. The malicious DNS servers would give fake, malicious answers, altering user searches, and promoting fake and dangerous products. Because every web search starts with DNS, the malware showed users an altered version of the Internet.

Under a court order, expiring July 9, the Internet Systems Consortium is operating replacement DNS servers for the Rove Digital network. This will allow affected networks time to identify infected hosts, and avoid sudden disruption of services to victim machines.
How Can I Protect Myself?

EAST CHICAGO | A man using a stolen identity to work in the city was arrested Tuesday after the real resident tracked him down at a South Side factory, police said.

The 30-year-old victim told police he was informed that his unemployment benefits from a previous job were being terminated because he was now working at Trai-Cor Processing, 4809 Tod Ave.

He was arrested on fraud charges. Police said Thursday that the man still had not been positively identified.
