Fraud Investigation Police Warn of Phone & Computer Scam

Richmond Police are telling people to be on the lookout for some computer scammers calling you at home. Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock says someone called a man Wednesday and said he was with “Windows” and identified himself as a “Windows Tech.”

The call came from a number with a 247 area code, which is an unassigned area code. The Caller told the man he needed better firewall protection and convinced the man to give him remote access to his computer. The Caller offered the man a firewall protection deal for about $200 to $250. The Caller sent the man a form with prices on it and the form said The Caller was “Jerry, Senior Tech Expert.”

That’s when the man decided he didn’t want the protection. The Caller got angry, started cursing at the man. Then The Caller told the man he couldn’t have control of his computer back and started deleting files. The man shut down the computer and cut off The Caller’s access.

Richmond Police say this is the second time they’ve heard about a scam like this in their area. Officers say you shouldn’t give someone access to your computer if you don’t know them, especially after getting unsolicited calls. Police say it’s rarely a good idea to respond to unsolicited contacts.

Private Detective: Johnson Co. Firefighters Search for Owners of Photographs

It is often overlooked that natural disasters are just as traumatic for first responders as it is for those they serve.

Firefighters like Larry Hackworth, can’t just shake off what happened one week ago in his backyard. The memories of the deadly storm striking Johnson County remain fresh in his mind.

“We had no idea except to say it was severe that we were expecting heavy rain and hail,” said Hackworth.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

These firefighters say non-traditional equipment, like boats and ATVs were vital in helping with the rescue. The last time these first responders saw anything close to this was the West Liberty tornado of 2012.

Now that the body of the last missing person has been recovered from the debris, firefighters with the Rockhouse Volunteer Fire Department are trying to find the owners of family photographs found during their search.

Every face is a victim of this devastating flood in someway. Now the hero responders are hoping to give back part of someone’s life that was taken away by the water.

If you recognize anyone in these pictures, you are asked to call 606-297-2525.

Private Detective: Pulaski County Business Owner Sets Up Sting to Catch Burglar

A Pulaski County business owner is a hero for setting up and capturing a man wanted for a string of burglaries.

It all started Friday afternoon, when Chris Burton closed up shop by C&B Tire with no plans of coming back for the evening. It was his brother, he says, he stopped by around six and noticed something wrong.

“The light was on and there was wrenches scattered from the door to my toolbox over there,” Burton says. “The way it was set up we knew he was going to come back. So we started plotting and figuring out and we put everything back where it was, left the doors unlocked, the lights on, left everything where it was at,” Burton says.

Burton had two friends standing watch, and they’re the ones who caught Richard Warren red-handed.

After police arrived, they found evidence in his truck linking him to a burglary the night before at a nearby pharmacy.

The tire shop owner says had they not come back that night, Warren might have gotten away with 30-40 thousand dollars worth of truck parts and tools.

Insurance Fraud NC Couple Burned Housed Down For Insurance Check

Investigators with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department say they believe a Triad couple burned down their home to get an insurance check.

On Friday, authorities arrested Shana Leonard Gordon of Advance and Neal Stone Gordon Jr. of Mocksville on the charges of second degree arson, insurance fraud, and felony conspiracy.

The fire happened back on November 24, 2014. Emergency crews responded to the home in the area of Craver Rd. and Enterprise Rd. in the Arcadia community of Lexington. Investigators say the Gordons were the property owners of this home, but when crews went to put out the fire, neither the couple nor anyone else was living there.

Fraud Investigation Louisville Man Sentenced for Defrauding Two Churches and Several Businesses

A Louisville man who admitted to defrauding two churches and several businesses was sentenced Thursday  to 24 months in prison and ordered to pay restitution to the victims in the amount of $114,018.

Information in an FBI press release states that 59-year-old Timothy Ray Hatler was charged in a federal indictment with three counts of mail fraud and one count of wire fraud and pleaded guilty to the charges in November of  2014.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

According to the plea agreement, Hatler falsely represented to the public, through websites and Internet postings, that he manufactured and sold light-emitting diode (LED) signs.

Hatler designed a scheme by doing business under various names including SignTech Manufacturing, SkyTech Signs, and Digital View Marketing. Hatler would inform individuals interested in purchasing LED signs that if they provided him with payment by mail or wire, he would provide signs made to their specifications. Hatler opened two bank accounts for the scheme and used a mailbox drop service in Atlanta to forward mail to two Louisville addresses and an address in Scottsville, Kentucky.

On a few occasions, Hatler ordered LED signs from other companies such as Olive LED and Soulphase, shipped the products to his customers, then requested that those customers serve as references for potential future customers. Most customers did not receive the signs they ordered and Hatler admitted to using the money for his personal use and benefit.

Private Detective: Couple Arrested After Children Found Locked in Room

A Powell County couple is now in jail on charges they locked two children in a small room..

According to the Powell Co. Sheriff’s Office, they were performing a drug round up with troopers and Probation and Parole officers Tuesday. They arrived at 62 Tori Ann Court looking for Darrell Meadows. There was a camper trailer on the property, which they were allowed to enter because Meadows is on parole.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

That’s when, officers say, they discovered the padlocked door. Through the crack they could see two kids, an 8-year-old and a 12-year-old. The children were lying down and not moving. Deputies started banging on the door to try and get them to respond but the kids didn’t. They kicked in the door and found that their mother had left a note in the room that said something along the lines of, “when you wake up text me and I’ll let you out.”

The room didn’t have an A/C or water and was extremely hot, but they say the young boy and girl are fine. They say they also found meth precursors and drug paraphernalia.

Darrell Meadows and the children’s mother, Sarah Mullins, were found hiding in the woods near the home. They been charged with Wanton Endangerment and Endangering the Welfare of a Minor.

The two children are in the care of Child Protective Services.
