Fraud Investigation BBB Warns to Avoid Scam Artists Who Take Advantage of Disasters

Better Business Bureau® serving Central & Eastern Kentucky is urging home and business owners who suffered property damage from recent severe storms and torrential rains to research what companies they hire to help rebuild and mitigate damage.

“Disastrous events like the flooding and wind events that hit our service area can act as a magnet for out-of-town contractors to come offering their services,” said Jack Frank, President & CEO of BBB serving Central & Eastern Kentucky. “Some of those businesses may be legitimate and reputable. But con artists can be in the mix.  We want to remind residents that the BBB stands ready to help them determine what businesses they can trust.”
Frank urges the public to check with the BBB on any contractor they are considering using at www.bbb.org/lexington, or calling (859) 259-1008 or 1-800-866-6668. “Even if your insurance company will pay the cost, you want to make sure that the business that does the work is reputable, competent, and able to address warranty issues if they arise long after the out-of-towners have left,” he said.
BBB also has free listings by industry of BBB Accredited Businesseswho meet the BBB’s ethical standards and have committed to BBB dispute resolution processes.  Consumers may access these lists on the BBB website or call to request lists be mailed or faxed.
Tips for Hiring a Company to Repair Storm Damage:
·        Get the company’s complete name, address and phone number. Be skeptical of any vague answers, or no offers of contracts or anything in writing. Beware of high pressure…reputable companies will let you check them out first.
·        Check out businesses with the Better Business Bureau by logging on to www.bbb.org/lexington. Get a list of BBB Accredited Businesses in the category you need on the website or by calling 1-800-866-6668. If a business says they are BBB Accredited, verify it with the BBB first.
·        Verify that the company has liability and worker’s comp insurance, as well as licensing if required. If a contractor cannot provide proof of it, reconsider.
·        If paying costs yourself, get several estimates.  Remember, businesses can charge whatever price they like. Get a written contract for work to be done. This helps protect the consumer and the business.
·        If it’s an out-of-town or out-of-state company, ask how any warranty issues or problems will be addressed long after work is done and the company is gone.
·        NEVER pay the entire amount of the job up front.

Missing Person Two Year Old Idaho Falls, ID Boy Still Missing

Nearly 200 people gathered Monday night to light candles and pray for an Idaho Falls toddler who’s been missing nearly four days.

Deorr Kunz Jr. disappeared while camping with his family in Leadore Friday. After extensive search and rescue operations, there’s been no sign of the two-year-old.

Family and friends organized a prayer vigil at Freeman Park, EastIdahoNews.com reported. During the service, Deorr’s parents said they have faith he’s still alive.

“We will find him one way or another,” said a tearful Deorr Kunz Sr., Deorr’s father. “We will find him no matter what it takes.”

A pastor prayed with the family and asked God to comfort the family.

Deonn’s mother, Jessica Mitchell, asked those in attendance to share pictures of Deorr on social media and on posters.

“He could be very, very close,” Mitchell said. “He could be very far away. We don’t know but we are covering all bases at this point.”

Deorr’s parents said while they were camping they left for a few minutes to explore. They assumed Deorr was with his grandfather, but his grandpa thought his parents were taking care of the child.

“There’s not much to be said other than one small mistake as a parent – leaving him with an adult that turns his head for a minute,” Kunz said. “Please cherish and love each other because it could be changed in just a split second.”

“He’s mommy’s boy and daddy’s little mini-me,” Kunz Sr. said. “I will find him if it’s the last thing I do.”

A possible lead

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has ruled out a lead they received Monday night concerning a missing Idaho Falls toddler.

According to Sgt. Jeff Edwards, a woman at the Ammon Walmart called the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office around 3:45 p.m. She told detectives she spotted a boy she believed could have been Deorr Kunz Jr. with a man. The two-year-old disappeared while camping with his family in Leadore, Idaho on Friday.

Edwards said detectives have reviewed Walmart surveillance video and investigated the tip. Tuesday afternoon they determined the lead was unfounded and the child was not Deorr.

Meanwhile Deorr’s family is asking the public to share a poster featuring photos of their son in hopes he will be found soon.

The Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office says extensive search and rescue operations have been suspended but investigators are still looking for the boy.

In an interview with EastIdahoNews.com, Deorr’s parents, Deorr Kunz Sr. and Jessica Mitchell, said they believe their son is still alive.

Missing Person Search Continues For Phelps County, MO Boy

The search for a missing Phelps County boy with autism is still ongoing.

Police say 13-year-old Johnathan Shay has been missing since Thursday.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, fire departments and the Eureka Search and Rescue team are still in St. James searching for Shay.

The command center that was set up in St. James was moved back to Rolla at the Sheriff’s Department on Monday.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Shay’s family says a shoe and footprints were found, but they did not belong to the boy.

According to Sergeant George Arnold of the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, the National Center for Exploited Children from Washington D.C. has now offered their services in the search.

Arnold says they will help by placing posters in a regional and national basis, and help get his picture out there in hopes that someone will recognize Shay.

Arnold says the National Center for Exploited Children will also assist by offering counseling for family members.

The Phelps County Sheriff’s Department and JoHnathan’s family said this is not the first time he has run off, and they say they know from experience that he will be hard to find.

Shay’s family says the boy has excellent survival skills, but they say not having his medication could affect his decision-making.

Sheriff Richard Lisenbe says that foul play is not suspected.

The search is still ongoing. Tuesday’s search will include Dry Fork Creek, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol Marine Division will assist.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department at 573-308-1213.
