Identity Theft Joplin Woman Arrested With Six Stolen Credit Cards

A Joplin woman who tried to cash a check made out to someone else was arrested in Springfield this week and found in possession of six stolen credit cards, according to court documents.

Bethani K. Patterson, 20, has been charged with trafficking in stolen identities, receiving stolen property, forgery and identity theft or attempt — all felonies — along with misdemeanor resisting arrest.

According to a probable cause statement, Patterson went to Quik Cash on West Kearney Street in Springfield on Tuesday and presented a $7,500 check made out to Janett Peterson, along with Peterson’s driver’s license.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Two things made the clerk suspicious, according to the statement. One, the picture on the driver’s license did not match up with Patterson. And two, a word on the amount line of the check had been scratched out and “thousand” had been written in. So the clerk called the authorities.

The statement says Patterson tried to flee from police when they arrived at Quik Cash, but she was eventually detained. She initially told police her name was Janett Peterson before admitting that she was Bethani Patterson, the statement says.

The statement says police searched the contents of Patterson’s purse and found six credit cards, a driver’s license, a Social Security card, AAA card and two Kohl’s charge cards, none of which had Patterson’s name on them.

Police traced most of the cards found in Patterson’s purse back to a car that had been stolen from a Joplin family a few days earlier, the statement says.

Patterson told police the check and cards had been given to her by a friend, the statement says. Patterson said she had been promised half or more of the amount obtained from cashing the check, the statement says.

Patterson said she was given the credit cards with instructions to see whether they were active, and the driver’s license was so she could have an ID to use when drinking, the statement says.

Police later discovered that the check Patterson tried to cash at Quik Cash was from the account of a dead man, the statement says.

Patterson said she did not know any of the people listed on any of the credit cards or identification cards, the statement says.

A bond recommendation document says Patterson was on probation for two different shoplifting convictions when she was arrested this week. She posted $7,500 bond.

Pedophile Tracking Mobile, AL Man Accused of Forcing Girl to Have Sex

A 33-year-old man remained jailed Friday after he was accused of forcing a 13-year-old girl to have sex with him, Mobile County District Court and Mobile County Metro Jail records show.

According to a complaint filed by prosecutors, authorities believe the abuse began in June 2009, when the child was 8 years old. The abuse ended on Dec. 24, six days before deputies booked 33-year-old Tavares LeJames Davis into jail, according to court records.

Davis faces charges of first-degree rape, second-degree rape, sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old and second-degree sexual abuse.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

The alleged abuse took place in Eight Mile, according to investigators.

Detectives were called to a local hospital on Dec. 24 after the girl came in suffering from injuries apparently sustained during the sexual assault, said Mobile County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lori Myles.

She added that Davis confessed to the abuse and that detectives are investigating to determine whether the attacks started before 2009.

Jail records show Davis has been arrested five other times since 2001, although he has no other sexual offenses on his record.

On Friday he was being held in jail for safekeeping on behalf of authorities in Mississippi and Baldwin County.

In Baldwin County, authorities signed a warrant for his arrest in November 2014 after he failed to appear in court while facing one count of driving with a suspended license.

The Mississippi charges were not immediately known.

Arson Investigation Suspicious Fire in Lincoln Co.

A Lincoln County home caught fire Friday afternoon and the fire chief there says he had reason to be suspicious.

Officials tell LEX 18 that there were two separate fires in the home, one by the water heater and another in the kitchen on the counter. The fire spread into the attic causing heat and smoke damage to the house. The owner says it is possibly a total loss.

Firefighters were suspicious because of the unlikelihood of two separate fires. Also the back door was open.

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

The owner says he was not home when the fire happened. He doesn’t believe someone intentionally set the fire.

He told LEX 18 he leaves his back door open all the time.

An arson investigator has been contacted.
