Wrongful Death Madison Co. Marine Found Dead in Newport Apartment

A Madison County native was found shot to death and hidden in his Newport apartment. Now police are looking for a person of interest considered armed and dangerous, who happens to be a convicted killer in California.

Anthony Martin, 38, was a veteran from Richmond. His brother said he was a loving son, sibling, nephew and father of two, who is deeply missed. For his neighbors in Newport, his death was a sad surprise.

“I don’t know who his family is but my heart goes out to them,” said Sylvia, Martin’s neighbor. People who lived in Martin’s apartment complex are mourning with his family, after Newport Police found him dead inside his apartment this week.

“It’s sad. I mean I feel for him and his family,” said Martin’s neighbor, Jamie Porter.

Martin was a marine, and his family in Richmond got worried when he didn’t show up for Thanksgiving. In fact just before the holiday is the last time neighbors remember seeing him.

“He had told the boys Happy Thanksgiving and he hopes they eat a lot of turkey,” said Porter.

Investigators said Martin’s family decided to search his apartment, however they found nothing. Then, this week police got a search warrant looked through the home again and eventually discovered Martin’s body. Police said he was hidden, and had been shot.

“Right here on the door step and it took three people to bring out a body bag,” said Maurice Horton, who lived near Martin.

Investigators said now they want to find Anthony Otis Simpson. Police said he is a convicted murderer, wanted in California for violating his parole, and is the last man who saw Martin alive.

Now for this veteran’s sake, his neighbors hope Simpson comes forward.

A missing Gloucester Township woman was found murdered Friday morning.

The body of 59-year old Susan D. Johnson was located by police in a wooded area near the 5000 block of Commonwealth Drive in Evesham Township, Burlington County.

Police have now charged 30-year-old Miguel Diaz in the murder. Diaz is a Mt. Laurel, New Jersey native.

Gloucester Township Police had gone to Johnson’s home Thursday for a well-being check after she was reported missing. Officers found signs of a struggle inside the residence.

Police were led to the location of the body by a woman who was originally a person of interest, but is now only considered a witness and has not been charged.

Police made it clear today, that Johnson’s murder was a result of her being a good samaritan as she brought the female witness and Diaz into her home a few months back.

Private Detective: Rape Charges Dropped Against Whitley Co. Man

Lawyers for a Whitley County Athletic Director facing rape charges in Baltimore, have released a statement announcing that the case has been dropped.

The News Journal in Corbin reported that Michael Campbell was arrested in January in Baltimore after a 23-year-old woman showed up at the hospital where she told detectives her mother’s fiance had sexually assaulted her.

Paul Croley, one of Campbell’s attorneys, released a statement saying that the situation was now terminated and that Campbell had maintained his innocence from the very beginning.

“It’s easy to make allegations against someone. These types of allegations can ruin people’s lives. Fortunately, our legal system requires the state to prove its case. In the media frenzy – sound bite driven era that we currently live, people forget that a criminal charge is nothing more than an unproven allegation. All too often, people rush to judge someone simply based upon what they see or hear in the news. Every person should have their day in court. For Michael Campbell, the nightmare is now officially over. He stood his ground and forced the State of Maryland to prove the charges had merit,” said Croley in his written statement.

Campbell thanked his family, friends, and attorneys who had stood by him during the ordeal.

“I am thankful the judicial system worked in my case and protected me from these untrue accusations,” said Campbell.

49-year-old Campbell was facing several sex offense charges, plus one count of second degree assault and one count of second degree rape.
