On July 9, 2014, Eugene Earl Gentry, age 63, pleaded guilty to four counts of a federal indictment including two counts of bank robbery through force, violence, and intimidation, one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of carjacking. Gentry admitted in court to robbing the United Citizens Bank, located at 1582 Campbellsville Road, in Columbia, Kentucky, of approximately $90,000 on October 15, 2012. On the same day, in Adair County, Kentucky, Gentry stole a 1998 Ford Ranger Pickup from United Citizens Bank manager and in doing so brandished a semi-automatic handgun which carries an additional charge of carjacking. One year later, on October 29, 2013, Gentry attempted to rob the Citizens Bank, located at 209 Campbellsville Bypass, located in Campbellsville, Kentucky. Gentry fled from the bank and was pursued by Campbellsville Police until his car crashed in to a parked 18-wheel style truck trailer loaded with logs. The loaded Hi-Point C9, 9mm semi-automatic pistol, found on Gentry at the crash scene was traced and came back as being sold to him in 2004.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Randy Ream and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with assistance from the Campbellsville Police Department, Columbia Police Department and the Adair County, Kentucky, Sheriff’s Department.

Insurance Fraud Brea, CA Man Charged With 10 Felonies

A 64-year-old Brea man made his first appearance in court Monday for allegedly orchestrating a $1.4 million insurance scam.

Eric Lee was charged Thursday and arrested at his home Friday. His arraignment today was rescheduled until Oct. 24.

Lee is accused of signing up about a dozen customers from October 2009 to November 2010 for life insurance policies they could not afford and “fudging the paperwork” so they would qualify, according to Senior Deputy District Attorney Marc Labreche.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Lee, who received up-front commissions, walked away with the money, making about $1.4 million before the policies lapsed because the beneficiaries could not make the payments, Labreche said.

Prosecutors call it an “advance commission scheme,” Labreche said.

Lee worked for FMC Financial Group, an agency for Mass Mutual, prosecutors said.

In many cases, insurance agents can sign up customers without proving income, Mass Mutual prohibited such policies, “so he needed a lie to get around that,” Labreche said.

Lee aroused suspicion when a large volume of the policies lapsed, Labreche said.

Lee could face up to 28 years and eight months in prison if he is convicted.

Lee is charged with 10 felony counts each of grand theft and insurance fraud with sentencing-enhancing allegations of loss of more than $100,000, aggravated white collar crime in excess of $500,000 and property damage exceeding $1.3 million.

Pedophile Tracking Former SD Pastor Accused

A former pastor at a South Dakota church is accused of having sex with a teenage girl while working there.

A federal grand jury in Lincoln County on Monday indicted Tony Haglund, who was a pastor in Canton, on three sex crime counts, including sexual contact with a child under 16 and sexual contact by a psychotherapist. He was arrested later that day in Florida’s Sumter County, where he works as a real estate agent, the Argus Leader reported.

A woman who answered Haglund’s cellphone Wednesday told The Associated Press that he had no comment.

Authorities allege that Haglund had sexual contact with the girl between January 2011 and December 2013, while he was a pastor at Canton Lutheran Church. She was 15 years old when the alleged abuse started.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America South Dakota Synod asked Haglund to resign when the allegations arose, Bishop David Zellmer told the newspaper, and Haglund resigned on Sept. 15, 2013.

“The South Dakota Synod and the ELCA do not tolerate inappropriate sexual behavior of any kind by members of the clergy,” Zellmer said in a statement. “ELCA congregations seek to be safe and welcoming places for all who attend and worship.”

Zellmer declined to tell the AP whether the synod alerted authorities to the allegations but said, “we have cooperated with law enforcement since the beginning and will continue to do so.”

Haglund could face 40 years in prison if convicted. Lincoln County Sheriff Dennis Johnson told the newspaper that Haglund could be brought back to South Dakota in 10 days if he waives extradition from Florida.

Tim Thies, the current pastor at Canton Lutheran Church, declined to comment to the newspaper.

Pedophile Tracking Sanger, TX Man Gets 30 Years

A 42-year-old Sanger man pled guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child and was sentenced to 30 years in prison in a case that concluded Tuesday in district court in Weatherford.

James Burt Opitz had been accused of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl on numerous occasions in 2012 and 2013 in northern Parker County.

“The allegations came out after the victim’s brother found pictures that she had taken of her own genitals on her Nintendo DS,” said Assistant District Attorney Jeff Swain, who prosecuted the case. “When her mother took her to a counselor to find out why she had taken the pictures, the victim explained what Opitz had been doing to her. It was a very credible outcry which the sheriff’s office investigators followed up on and corroborated.”

Opitz will not be eligible for parole until he has completed half of his sentence, Swain said.

“Of course, just because he’s eligible doesn’t mean that they will or should grant him parole,” he added.

Private Detective: Man Arrested for Shoplifting Four TV’s From Walmart

A Madison County man is under arrest after Richmond Police said he stole four TV’s from the same Walmart in a matter of weeks. However Investigators said social media helped them crack the case.

Shoppers at the Walmart in Richmond were shocked to hear a man could walk out the door with so much merchandise. Richmond Police said that is exactly what 30-year-old Ricky Cunliffe did over the last three weeks.

“I think he thought he was getting away with it but he wasn’t,” said Major Steve Gregg, with Richmond Police.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Police said Cunliffe went to the same store on September 17th, 26th, 30th and October 1st and did the same thing each time. “Go straight to the TV’s, go straight to an isle take the spider wrap off. And as fast as he could, go straight out the door,” said Gregg.

Investigators said Cunliffe would flash a receipt and sometimes bring his young son to throw off employees. After that, officers said Cunliffe would sell the TV’s to pawn shops.

Because of the rash of thefts, Walmart asked Richmond Police to step in. “How did we catch him? Facebook,” said Gregg. Police posted his picture on Facebook and asked the public for help. Within about five minutes, they had their answer.

“We got about 60 phone calls that everybody knew who he was,” said Gregg. Investigators had Cunliffe’s name, and the tv’s he allegedly stole. Then on Monday he turned himself into police.

“I think he will probably learn his lesson,” said Gregg. Cunliffe is under arrest in the Madison County Detention Center, charged with four counts of theft by unlawful taking, and three counts of theft by deception.
