A Louisville man and his dog were killed Friday night in a crash along the interstate in Scott County.

According to the Scott County Coroner, the two-vehicle wreck happened just before midnight on I-64 near mile marker 68. That is close to the Woodford County line.

The coroner said something caused a driver to cross the center line on the interstate, colliding head-on with the victim’s vehicle.

Pedophile Tracking Omaha, Nebraska Man Facing Life in Prison

An Omaha man who spent less than three years in prison for participating in the gang-rape of teenager in 2000 now faces life in prison for allegedly sexually assaulting two young girls within months of leaving prison in 2004.

Kelvin Smith, 35, was convicted this week by a Sarpy County jury of 11 sex-related crimes against the young girls, including first-degree sexual assault of a child and third-degree sexual assault of a child, The Omaha World-Herald reported (http://bit.ly/SISMR8 ).

He faces up to life in prison when he’s sentenced on Aug. 11.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

The girls were 9 and 10 years old when Smith began abusing them in 2004, months after he had been released from prison, prosecutors said.

Smith was charged with first-degree sexual assault and false imprisonment in a 2000 attack on a 19-year-old woman. Prosecutors say several men dragged her into an abandoned north Omaha house and took turns raping her. She managed to escape after stabbing Smith with a knife.

As part of a plea deal, Smith pleaded no contest to attempted sexual assault in that case.

The victim in that case told the World-Herald on Friday that she had been angry over Smith’s sentence in her case, which she felt was too lenient. But she said she’s happy he faces decades in prison for his latest convictions.

The Associated Press generally does not name victims of sexual assault.

“I was really happy,” she said, “but I was sorry it had to happen again.”

Drug Dog Sweep 58 Pounds of Meth Found Near Holbrook, AZ

It’s being called one of the state’s largest meth busts in recent memory, and some of the circumstances surrounding the find are a bit unusual.

After officers pulled over a truck Wednesday on I-40 near Holbrook, the Navajo County Sheriff Department’s drug dog located 58 pounds of crystal methamphetamine inside an air compressor on the vehicle. The meth has a street value of more than $2.6 million, according to the sheriff’s department.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

The driver of the vehicle, Erasmo Aguirre-Padilla, 32, was alone.

Chief Deputy Jim Molesa told 12 News the person who packaged up and hid the meth tried some things a bit different from the way many drug transporters try to hide drugs.

“The person divided 58 pounds of crystal meth into several bundles, wrapped the meth packages in cellophane, then dipped those packages into grease to try to hide the odor,” he explained. “They put the grease-covered bundles into dozens of Tupperware containers. Then, they took it one step further and put the Tupperware containers inside a heavy-duty metal air compressor.”

A sheriff’s department K-9 managed to smell the meth inside the compressor even though it was buried in multiple layers of protection.

Navajo County Sheriff K.C. Clark says the situation is not only troubling because Aguirre-Padilla was allegedly smuggling drugs but also because he was recently arrested by the Department of Homeland Security and was on release from its custody when he was caught.

“Some of these individuals like Aguirre-Padilla are criminals and are a danger to our communities,” Sheriff Clark said. “The damage that 58 pounds of this poison does to our families and communities is huge. How many other loads of this poison has he done while on a (federal) ‘catch and release’?”

Aguirre-Padilla was booked into the Navajo County jail pending several charges, including: transportation of a dangerous drug for sale; possession of a dangerous drug for sale; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Identity Theft Cleaning Crew at State Buildings in Phoenix Arrested

Nine janitorial workers suspected of using fictitious documents to get jobs and their manager were arrested in a raid of state office buildings in Phoenix.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says the raid that resulted in the arrests of the Upright Commercial Cleaning employees was carried out Thursday night at Arizona Department of Transportation offices at the state capitol complex.

The sheriff’s Criminal Employment Squad began investigating the cleaning company after ADOT employees reported possible fraud. One of the janitorial workers reportedly attempted to change his name on his ADOT building access card.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Arpaio said the nine workers are immigrants who aren’t in the country legally and the manager is a U.S. citizen suspected of knowing that employees were using fake documents.

The sheriff’s office said the manager will be charged with trafficking in identity theft, a class two felony. The employees were arrested on forgery charges.

They were all booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail.

According to the sheriff’s office, the owners of Upright Commercial Cleaning were cooperative during the investigation and likely had no knowledge of the alleged criminal activity.

A message left at the business by the Associated Press wasn’t immediately returned Friday.

The sheriff’s office said a search warrant served at the business Friday revealed further documentation of potential identity theft and forgery.

The investigation is ongoing.

The bust marks the 83rd business raid by Arpaio’s office since 2008. More than 780 people have been arrested on suspicion of forgery and identity theft.

Critics say the raids have done little to hold employers accountable.

Supporters say the raids have helped combat identity theft.

“Forgery and the use of fake identifications is a serious crime which creates serious security issues, especially when a government establishment is infiltrated by people with fraudulent identifications,” Arpaio said in a statement.

Missing Person Bracken County Woman’s Family Still Searches for Answers

Nearly a year after she was reported missing, the family of a Bracken County woman continues to search for answers.

Kimberly Abercrombie was reported missing last June.

“She’s really family. She married into the family and we feel that she’s family,” said Phyllis Abercrombie, Kimberly’s grandmother-in-law.

While her husband, Nick, was serving in Afghanistan, Kimberly and her young son were staying with Phyllis. Phyllis says they last saw Kimberly last May.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“My grandson called the house here and he wanted to know if we knew where she was at because he hadn’t heard from her and we just started checking around with friends that we knew and they hadn’t either,” said Phyllis.

The family admits Kimberly struggled with drugs and had a warrant out for her arrest. They fear the worst has happened because they say Kimberly wouldn’t have abandoned her young son.

“She always called Zane and talked to him or whoever had him and she wasn’t doing that. so that’s what had us worried,” said Phyllis.

Kentucky State Police began investigating the disappearance last June. Kimberly’s car was found along AA Highway last summer but the Abercrombies say they haven’t heard any new information in months.

With the passing of a year, they hope someone comes forward with information.

“There’s somebody that knows where she’s at if she is dead, and I just wish, anonymously, they would tell the police. We need closure,” said Phyllis.

Kimberly had several distinguishing tattoos including a large fairy on her back and “Zane” across her foot.

Anyone with information is asked to call state police Dry Ridge Post.
