Insurance Fraud Scammers Faked Single Car Crashes Using Deer Body Parts

Anyone who’s seen the aftermath of a car-on-deer collision knows the scene is far from a pretty one. But officials in Pennsylvania say a group of 41 scammers took the time to stage similar gory tableaus to fake single-car accidents and defraud insurance companies out of $5 million total.

Using a variety of deer parts, geese, dogs, blood, fur, concrete, overturned cartons of fruit and other props, prosecutors say the owner of an auto-body shop (and alleged mob associate) and his group staged elaborate scenes in order to defraud auto insurance companies, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

A grand jury called the scheme the business of “fictitious deer accidents,” wherein the shop owner told workers to pull weeds from the river and create “Hollywood photos” of fake accidents.

He allegedly preferred making it look like single-vehicle accidents because those would more likely be dubbed “no-fault” situations by insurance companies, making it likely that they’d pay the claims without raising the owners’ premiums.

Witnesses for the grand jury said he’d say, “I live my life to cheat insurance companies.”

He and 40 other people have been charged with fraud after 16-month investigation by a Philadelphia grand jury.

Private Detective KSP Investigating Jackson County Bank Robbery

The search continues for a woman who police say robbed a Jackson County Bank Thursday afternoon.

Police say around 3:30pm Thursday, a woman captured on surveillance walked into the Sand Gap branch of the Jackson County Bank, demanded money, then took off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“The initial investigation it appears she was wearing a pink shirt and a light colored ball cap,” said Trooper Robert Purdy with Kentucky State Police.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Police say the woman then got into the passenger seat of a car waiting across the street. The four door gold or silver colored passenger car was last seen traveling toward US 421 in Sand Gap.

This is just the latest in what locals call a crime spree over the last few months.

“It’s very frustrating. You look at every person that comes through your store that you don’t know and every person that you do know wondering if they’re connected or who they know,” said Linda Isaacs, who owns the Whistle Stop Gas and Grocery across the street from the bank.

She says this is the third time the bank’s been hit in the last month.

“The ATM had been broken into and also they tried to cut into the bank,” said Isaacs.

She says thieves even broke into the town fire station before hitting her store two months ago.

“That’s a pretty horrifying experience in itself. When you walk up or come into your parking lot in the morning and find out it’s been broken into and everything that you’ve worked for for the last 5 years pretty much like no body cared and threw it to the dust,” said Isaacs.

With the increase in crime, Sand Gap has also created a community council to watch over their town. The council met Thursday evening after the bank robbery.

Call Kentucky State Police if you have any information about this bank robbery.

Insurance Fraud Baldwin, NY Man Sentenced in Car Torch Scheme

A Baldwin man was sentenced to prison Tuesday in an insurance fraud scheme stemming from the 2012 torching of a luxury car in Queens, prosecutors said.

Nassau District Judge Martin Massell sentenced Henry Flores, 28, to 11/2 to 3 years after he pleaded guilty in March to felony fourth-degree insurance fraud, according to the Nassau County district attorney’s office.

The FDNY was called to the scene of a burning 2009 Range Rover on Sept. 12, 2012, which fire marshals determined was arson, prosecutors said in a news release.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Five days later, the owner, a Queens resident, “filed a fraudulent police report” with Nassau police and a fraudulent claim with his insurance company, claiming “his vehicle had been stolen from in front of a friend’s house in North Bellmore” on Sept. 16, prosecutors said. “As part of the insurance claim, the owner sought to be paid at least $38,000 — the total loss value of the vehicle.”

A subsequent investigation determined “the owner had given the vehicle to Flores and paid him $2,000 to damage and dispose of the vehicle so that the owner could file a bogus insurance claim,” the office of District Attorney Kathleen Rice said. “As part of that investigation, the FDNY obtained an audio recording of Flores admitting that he had given the vehicle to a third person for the purpose of having it torched in Queens.”

Shortly after Flores’ arrest in October 2012, “the owner died of natural causes in a Brooklyn hospital,” prosecutors said. “The third person involved in the scheme was not identified.”

Drug Dog Sweep Woman Arrested in Brunswick, GA

A woman who pulled off the road to see why a Brunswick police officer had stopped her friend was arrested herself after a drug-sniffing dog alerted on her car, police said.

A Brunswick police officer stopped a Jeep about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday on the F.J. Torras Causeway after its driver failed to stop for a stoplight while turning onto the causeway from the mainland, Brunswick Police Capt. Kevin Jones said.

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

As the officer talked with the driver, he noticed a strong odor of marijuana from the Jeep and called for a dog trained to sense the presence of drugs, Jones said.

After the dog, K-9 Brax II, alerted on the Jeep, officers searched it and found .10 grams of cocaine, a half-pound of marijuana and 205.1 grams of suspected marijuana powder, Jones said.

The driver of the Jeep, Odet Douglass, 25, of St. Simons Island, was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and running a traffic light, Jones said.

While officers were conducting the investigation of the Jeep, a woman in another vehicle pulled over and asked why police had stopped Douglass, who she said was her friend, Jones said.

The woman was instructed to leave the scene, but she remained and Brax II alerted on her vehicle, Jones said.

Officers searched it and found 19.6 grams of marijuana and an open container of alcohol, Jones said.

The driver of the second vehicle, Katherine Lang, 25, of Brunswick, was charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of an open container, police said.

Douglass posted $18,208 in bail Tuesday and was released, Glynn County Sheriff’s Office records show.

Lang was also released.

The suspected marijuana powder was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for identification.

Glynn-Brunswick Narcotics Enforcement Team investigators said that if the substance tests positive as marijuana powder, it will be the first time any has been seized in Glynn County.
