Pedophile Tracking Former Independence, MO Youth Minister Sentenced to 30 Years

A former Independence youth minister who, according to federal authorities, produced child pornography and had a long history of preying upon young victims was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison.

Dennis W. Myers, 53, had pleaded guilty in August to transporting a minor across state lines for illegal sexual activity and to receiving child pornography over the Internet. Myers admitted having sex with a teenage girl whom he had driven from Arkansas to the Kansas City area.

During the sentencing hearing Friday, federal prosecutors said Myers was a sexual predator who received and produced child pornography. He also repeatedly sexually exploited and molested young girls over a 25-year period, the prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, Myers served as youth pastor in the late 1980s at a Methodist church in Independence before he resigned and moved to Springdale, Ark.

After arriving there, one of his Independence victims wrote a letter to his new congregation and said Myers had fondled her. However, Myers intercepted the mail and then wrote the victim, trying to persuade her not to tell them what happened because it would create a scandal at the church, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Katharine Fincham.

Myers left that church in 1994 and started a disc jockey business and trained a 15-year-old girl to assist him. About that time, Myers began having sex with the girl, federal authorities said.

In 1997, Springdale police arrested Myers for allegedly giving alcohol to a minor, fondling her and photographing her in the nude. He pleaded guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Myers was sentenced to two days in jail and given two years of probation.

Myers later moved to Blue Springs. After two teen girls complained that Myers gave them alcohol and had sexual contact, police searched his home and seized a computer. Investigators found a video of child pornography that had been downloaded from the Internet.

On Friday, Myers apologized for his actions, said he looked forward to receiving treatment and said he would accept any punishment imposed by Chief U.S. District Judge Greg Kays.

Myers said that his porn addiction “grew like a cancer” and he “chose the path of least resistance.”

In announcing his sentence, Kays said that as a youth minister, Myers repeatedly betrayed the trust of parents who had placed their children in his pastoral care, “where we think they should be the safest and not subjected to terrible, sick acts.”

Myers also faces statutory sodomy and attempted enticement of a child charges in Jackson County.

Wrongful Death Wife of Decapitated Georgia Man Found Dead in Lake

By any standard, the killings are grisly.

With the discovery of the body of an 87-year-old Georgia woman whose disappearance came to light after her husband’s decapitated body was found in their waterfront home, authorities not only want to know who did it, but also why.

Shirley Dermond’s body was found in Lake Oconee, south of Athens, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills told reporters Friday.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“We now, unfortunately, know that Shirley Dermond was murdered,” Sills said.

Sills declined to discuss the condition of the body other than to say, “the head was not removed or anything like that.”

Authorities were alerted Friday by two fishermen who spotted what they believed to be a body in the lake, some five or six miles from the couple’s home.

The discovery adds an element to the investigation — the possibility that a boat was a mode of transportation in the killing, Sills said.

“This jumps us about two jumps up on the checkerboard, shall we say,” he said.

Dermond’s family is in shock with the news of the discovery of her body, said the Rev. David Key of Lake Oconee Community Church.

“We haven’t even had a funeral for Russell because their kids wanted to wait. Now that we know about Shirley, we will start planning the funeral services for both.”

From the beginning, investigators treated Dermond’s disappearance as an abduction. Her purse, cell phone and car were all at the couple’s million-dollar waterfront home on Lake Oconee where her husband’s headless body was found.

Investigators believe she was taken from her home after her husband, 88-year-old Russell Dermond, was decapitated sometime between May 2 and May 4.

Investigators continue to search for his head, and they plan to look in the same area of the lake where Dermond’s body was found, Sill said.

“Obviously, the head of Mr. Dermond will be quite difficult to locate.”

Russell Dermond’s body was discovered in the couple’s garage after friends, who hadn’t heard from the couple in days, went to their home.

The FBI put up more than 100 billboards in its search for the missing woman, and it offered a reward of up to $20,000 for information to her location or the arrest of the person responsible for her disappearance.

“The mindset of the individual that did this was a homicidal individual that doesn’t deserve to breathe the air on this Earth,” Sills said.

In the days after Dermond’s disappearance, authorities searched Lake Oconee in the vicinity of the couple’s home — turning up only a lawn chair and a Christmas tree — and sent cadaver dogs into the nearby woods, to no avail. Authorities have also spoken to neighbors, family and friends.

So far, the investigation has turned up little to shed light on the crimes. Investigators aren’t aware of any enemies the couple had made, or any reason someone would target them, Sills said.

Private Investigator, 36 Arrested in Drug Round Up

A total of 36 people were arrested Friday on charges of unlawful distribution and facilitation to manufacture methamphetamine.

Kentucky State Police worked with the Scott County and Harrison County Sheriff’s departments on the drug round up.

“Methamphetamine is still very prominent in our area, as is heroin, as are many other hard drugs. It is such a scourge on our schools and on our children; they are the most vulnerable, they’re the ones that we want to make sure this is not accessible to,” said trooper Kendra Wilson.

Four others were indicted by the Scott County grand jury for engaging in an organized crime syndicate.

KSP say they do drug round ups as often as possible, trying to keep hard drugs off the streets.

Pedophile Tracking New Hampshire Woman Sentenced to 15 Years

A 21-year-old New Hampshire woman has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to the sexual exploitation of a child.

The investigation started last year when Manchester police received information from the United States Air Force that Erin Upham was communicating with a member of the armed services stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Police said they had information the communication was of a sexual nature and involved a child. A search warrant of her laptop and cellphones showed images of her and the child engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

The airman who had been stationed in Japan, 22-year-old Eric Morrison, was sentenced last week to 17.5 years in prison. Court documents indicate Morrison directed Upham to sexually abuse the child during at least one video chat session.

Identity Theft Instagram Scam Could Lead to Identity Theft

A fake page has been created in the name of Solomon Jackson, Jr. on Instagram saying it will give a $1,000 scholarship to the first 100k followers of the page.

Jackson is a 2009 $259 million lottery winner, but as innocent as the instructions to receive the so called scholarship sounds, it could result in people becoming victims of identity theft.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

“It was just a page and you were supposed to give a little bit of information and you were supposed to get something in return,” said Juliana Harris with the SC Department of Consumer Affairs.

Harris says her department was notified by the South Carolina Education Lottery that the scholarships were a scam. The page is asking for emails.

“Email sounds like an harmless piece of information to give to someone and we do it a lot of times to sign up for sweepstakes, but it is important to note that if you do give someone your email address and they happen to have other pieces of information that you didn’t know they had, a lot of times they can hack into other accounts that you have,” added Harris.

She says if scammers have installed a virus on a computer to detect the keystrokes, they can potentially have your email address and the password for the email address.

“Scammers know what’s out there and they know what is trending. So they’re going to go towards what’s most lucrative to them,” said Harris.

Some Instagram users have caught on to the scam, and have posted warnings for their followers.

However for those who may fall victim to the scam, they’re encouraged to alert the Federal Trade Commission as well as create a stronger password to any accounts at risk, and look through financial statements to ensure nothing unfamiliar has been purchased.

“A lot of times when someone steals your credit card number, they might use it for just a one dollar purpose, because they’re just checking to see if the number still works,” concluded Harris.
