Fraud Investigation BBB Warns of ‘One-Ring’ Phone Scam

The Better Business Bureau is warning people of a new scam sweeping the country, including Kentucky.

It involves scammers calling a cell phone once, then hanging up. When the user calls that number back, they are connected to a paid international adult entertainment service or chat line.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Charges then appear on the user’s cell phone bill.

The BBB suggests not answering calls from unknown area codes and not calling them back.

Facebook can now read your text messages on Android phones

According to a Reddit user who posted a screenshot from his Android phone Monday of Facebook’s latest app update, the popular social media platform is now reading users’ text messages.

Reddit user Tony.Calileo.com noticed the change in the “App permissions” after downloading Facebook’s latest mobile update. The Redditor snapped a screenshot from his Android device, highlighting the line saying “New: Read your text messages (SMS or MMS),” which gives Facebook the ability to read both text and picture messages.

http://liarcatchers.com/cyber_investigations.html

The update began its gradual rollout to mobile devices at the end of last year, and has since been accompanied by complaints from users that the update is unnecessarily invasive.

Facebook claims the feature is used to help sync users’ phone numbers to their Facebook accounts, allowing the app to automatically scan your message inbox for the confirmation code Facebook sends in a text for verification.

“We realize some of these permissions sound scary, so we’d like to provide more info about how we use them,” Facebook wrote on its official app permissions page.

“It’s already too much that the app was already apparently collecting people’s phone numbers without their permission. I’m sorry, but no, Facebook, you don’t get to read my texts,” another user complained on Facebook’s support page.

If you’ve updated to the latest version of the app, Facebook also has access to call logs, contacts, messages, and the ability to see other apps downloaded to your phone.

One of Facebook’s engineers said the Android platform does not currently allow for the app to just look for a specific message or type of message, which is why Facebook needs access to the entire message inbox.

Users are not able to pick and choose what permissions they allow and don’t – they must either discontinue using the app, refuse the update for as long as possible (which may affect its usability and functionality in the future), or accept Facebook’s access stipulations.

To check the current permissions on an Android device, open Settings, Application Manager, and then Facebook.

“Facebook gathers this information from pretty much everything you feed them – that’s nothing new,” Tony.Calileo.com wrote. “But now they’re able to read your text messages. At this point, it’s either stick with the old version, get rid of Facebook on Android, or accept that they’ve got access to every one of your text messages, call log, your personal contact card, the names of whatever other apps you’re using…”

Missing Person $10K Reward for Lafayette, CO Man

Family and friends of a Lafayette man missing for more than a week are offering a $10,000 reward for anyone with information about his whereabouts.

Nathaniel Tallman, 25, was last seen at about 6 p.m. Jan. 21 behind the wheel of his black 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Rally near the intersection of Empire Road and U.S. 287 in Lafayette, according to friends.

He was on his way to Longmont, but he has not been seen or heard from since.

Tallman’s father said he has not heard from his son, which is highly unusual.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Kevin Tallman said Nathaniel works with him in the family’s greeting card and gift distribution business. He said he got a call or a text from his son Jan. 21 but has not heard from him since, and he contacted Lafayette police Jan. 23.

“We’re just waiting, hoping for some good news,” Kevin Tallman said Wednesday.

Lafayette police entered Tallman into the department’s computer system as a missing person and advised other state law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for him and his car, which has temporary license plates.

Kevin Tallman said an aerial search also was conducted Tuesday.

“Lafayette police and the Sheriff’s Office have been unbelievable and doing the best they can,” Tallman said. “We really appreciate their efforts.”

He said family and friends have raised $10,000 for a reward for any information about his son’s whereabouts, and they will continue to raise money for the reward.

“We hope that with a reward, more people will keep their eyes open,” Tallman said. “We have a lot of people searching.”

Nathaniel Tallman is described as white with brown hair and hazel eyes, standing about 5-foot-10-inches tall. He was last seen wearing black sweatpants with a white stripe down the side and a white North Face jacket.

Kevin Tallman said many people may also remember Nathaniel from his time playing baseball for Monarch High School.

Friends and family told police they do not believe he intentionally ran away or took his own life. Kevin Tallman said his son was not into camping or hiking.

“We’re scared and pretty devastated, but we’re trying to be strong because we know he’d want us to be,” he said. “He is the nicest person, he has the biggest heart.”

Anyone with information about Nathaniel Tallman is urged to contact Lafayette police at 303-665-5571. Information also may be provided to his friend Zalyn Lee by emailing TheDGAFLifer@gmail.com or by calling the Nate Tallman Reward Tip Line at 303-667-1639.
