Wrongful Death Man Accused in Laurel County Stabbing Turns Self In

A man who police say stabbed another man to death in Laurel County Thursday night has turned himself in.

Hubert Lewis,25, turned himself in Friday and told police he stabbed the victim twice in the neck during a fight.

60-year-old Clinton “Ray” Howard was found dead in his home Thursday night. Lewis was gone from the scene when police arrived, but his girlfriend Tiffany Jackson was there and, police say, she has been cooperating with the investigation.

Police say the fight started with an argument between the three.

Several of the victim’s family live near Howard on Campbell Road, but say they didn’t hear or see anything the night of the crime. They say they are still coping with the loss and can’t understand why anyone would hurt such a kind man.

Wrongful Death Man Accused in 2012 Enters Open Guilty Plea

A man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend’s father and trying to break into the family’s home confessed to a Lexington judge Friday.

20-year-old Edgar Vieyra stood before the judge in a courtroom, and after a long pause…

“Yes, Your Honor,” he responded.

Vieyra entered an open plea of guilty to the murder of Lexington business man, Livrado Romero, and all other charges against him, meaning he is allowing the court to decide his sentence.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Vieyra’s lead lawyer, Tom Griffith, thinks the judge will be fair.

“I’ve always been impressed with [the judge’s] fairness. And we decided that putting it in her hands would lead to a just result for everyone involved,” he said.

If convicted, the penalty could range from a minimum of 20 years in prison up to, and including, the death penalty.

The Romero family says Vieyra was the estranged boyfriend of Romero’s daughter.

Last summer, police say in the early morning hours, Vieyra tried to break into Romero’s home, who tried to stop Vieyra from entering when he was shot by the young man. Romero’s son says his mother was also shot, but recovered in the hospital.

The Romero family sat by as Vieyra made his plea Friday, guilty to murder, assault in the first and second degree, burglary in the first degree, and a violation of a Kentucky domestic violence order.

“He was very nervous,” Griffith said. “He had a lot of questions, and I don’t blame him. It’s about as serious as it gets.”

Fraud Investigation Phone and Computer Scam

The Lexington Police Financial Crimes Unit detectives are warning citizens about a telephone scam, which they have received complaints about during the past two weeks.

The scam, which is trending nationwide, involves a suspect(s) pretending to represent a computer manufacturer or anti-virus software company. The scammer will request that the potential victim visit a website from their personal computer and then download and install a file into the computer’s registry. The downloaded file is the key to the scam. It is embedded with a “Trojan virus”, which enters the system and steals private information and passwords stored on the computer. All of this is done in the “background” so the victim has no idea the virus is working. This virus is especially harmful for people who utilize mobile banking, as the scam artist may begin transferring money from bank accounts without the account holder’s knowledge.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Detectives recommend you never give someone access to your computer remotely, or download unknown or suspicious software.

If you have been targeted by this scam, or are contacted by the scammer in the future, please call the Lexington Division of Police at 859-258-3700. We also encourage victims to call your financial institutions to ensure no fraudulent activity has occurred on your accounts.

Private Detective Arapahoe High School Shooting in Colorado

Two students were injured in a shooting at a Colorado high school and a third student, the suspected gunman, has died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Police said one of the wounded students was in serious condition, the other was being treated for minor injuries.

“The suspect has been found inside the school and has deceased by what appears to be self inflicted gunshot wound,” said Grayson Robinson, Arapahoe County Sheriff.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

The gunman entered Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colo., looking to target a specific teacher, who escaped the school, Robinson said. When another student confronted him, the student was shot.

“The teacher began to understand that he was being looked at and exited the school. One student confronted the armed student and was shot,” Robinson said.

A school custodian told ABC News affiliate KMGH-TV that he saw the gunman confront the teacher, who he says was a librarian. The teacher was able to get away and the custodian said he drove the librarian away in his truck.

Police said they know the identity of the gunman, but are completing interviews with his family before releasing his name.

The school was quickly placed on lockdown, students said, as teacher were ordered to lock classroom doors and dim the lights.

“I was in math and it happened three classrooms away,” said student Berny Acosta from a nearby church where evacuated students assembled.

“There was a first shot and it happened from a classroom, and then I heard three or four more. There was a shot and then a pause and then four continuous shots. We went immediately into lockdown…. Turned all the lights off, got as far from the windows and doors as we could,” Acosta told ABC News.

“I saw blood on the ground of the study center when evacuated. That’s where there was a lot of blood on the ground. That’s where the ambulance carried people out from,” he said.

Student Kevin Dement said the kids were staying calm in the classroom, “but as soon as we were evacuated we just ran.”

The school is part of the Littleton, Colo., school district and is just a few miles from Columbine High School, the scene of one of the country’s worst school massacres, in which 15 people, including two teenage gunmen, were killed.

In a scene that was eerily reminiscent of the Columbine tragedy, hundreds of students could be seen fleeing the school and then approaching police with their hands up to be searched.

Bomb-detection units and SWAT teams were on the scene.

Students described a swift response by police, with dozens entering the school, minutes after the first shots were fired.

Identity Theft 1 in 14 Americans Fell Victim

The government says 1 in 14 Americans fell prey to identity theft last year, and it’s a crime that takes a heavy emotional toll on many of its victims.

A national household survey of 70,000 people shows identity theft resulted in nearly $25 billion in losses last year.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

For many victims, the size of the loss was eclipsed by concerns that someone had stolen their identity and that it might take weeks or months to repair the damage.

Among victims who spent six months or more resolving financial and credit problems stemming from identity theft, 47 percent experienced severe emotional distress.

Fraud Investigation 2 LAPD Officers Arrested

Two veteran Los Angeles Police Department officers were arrested today after an investigation by the department’s Workers’ Compensation Fraud Unit.

Investigators working with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office determined that the officers had provided false testimony during depositions related to their industrial injury claims.

One of the police officers who was arrested was Jonathan Hall, a 19-year- old veteran last assigned to the Emergency Services Division. He surrendered Wednesday in response to an arrest warrant listing four felony counts of workers compensation fraud, insurance fraud, grand theft and attempted perjury, police said.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Bail for the 45-year-old officer was set at $80,000. He is assigned to home pending the outcome of the criminal and administrative investigators.

Also arrested was Ralph Mendoza, a 13-year veteran, last assigned to the Hollenbeck Division patrol. He surrendered on an arrest warrant listing two felony counts of workers’ compensation fraud and grand theft.

Mendoza, 44, who lives in San Bernardino County, was held on $40,000 bail. He has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of an investigation.

“Public trust is at the very core of the police profession, and when that trust is violated we must employ every measure to restore it,” said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck.

“I am troubled whenever our officers are accused of violating that trust. As the chief, it is my duty to ensure that we fully investigate these cases of alleged misconduct and to take appropriate action when the misconduct is found to be true.”

Anyone with information related to this or any other case was asked to call the LAPD’s Special Operations Division at (213) 473-5672.
