Missing Person NH Teen Sent Letter to Mother

A New Hampshire teenager who disappeared nearly two months ago mailed her mother a letter several weeks after she was last seen, law enforcement officials said Friday.

The FBI and New Hampshire attorney general’s office said 15-year-old Abigail Hernandez wrote her mother on Oct. 22. The letter was postmarked Oct. 23, two weeks after she was last seen on Oct. 9, but the family didn’t get the letter until Nov. 6.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young said the delay may have been caused by the letter going to a post office box and not the Hernandez house.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Police said they did not disclose the letter until they could verify it was authentic. They are not releasing the letter or any of the contents and won’t say where it was mailed from.

Law enforcement officials said the letter, which they called unprecedented in similar investigations, has given them hope although they still have “grave concerns” for her safety.

Abigail was last seen after leaving Kennett High School in North Conway. Police have said she walked her normal route toward home and sent several text messages to a friend between 2:30 and 3 p.m.

At first, police said she made it home but they later said that was untrue. Police also at first said she made a call about 6:30 that night but later said that, too, was untrue.

The last signal her phone sent was at 3:07 p.m. from the west side of Cranmore Mountain Resort, 2.5 miles from her home.

“Though she could have left willingly, someone now could be coercing her,” said Kieran Ramsey, the FBI special agent in charge who is leading the investigation. “Someone now may be manipulating her.”

Asked if Abigail had run away before, Young said: “This is not a characteristic that we have seen before from her.”

Police asked people to be on the lookout for the dark-haired girl. They said neighbors should report if a young lady recently moved into the area.

Young said because Abigail has no financial means, police believe she’s getting help “either from a friend or, as we fear, a foe.”

“We implore Abby that if she hears this, if she’s able to see this, contact us,” she said. “We will do everything we can to reunite her with her mother. If it’s a good citizen, a good Samaritan who has her who thinks you’re helping her, I can assure you, you’re not.”

Since she vanished, police have consistently said they have no evidence to suggest anything suspicious and are treating this as a missing person’s case.

A $20,000 reward and activation of the FBI’s tip line, 1-800-CALL-FBI, have yielded a few leads but no solid information. Her family has made pleas for her safe return and the community has rallied around them, holding vigils, helping search, printing posters and sponsoring billboards seeking information.

Missing Person DNA Match Identifies Teen Missing Since 1993

On Thursday, a DNA match revealed the identity of a teen’s body that was found by hikers in 1994.

Kori Joanne Lamaster, aka Kori Joann Bowman who was 17-years-old when she went missing from Pacifica, Calif. in 1993 has been identified as the body that was found in Pogonip Park by hikers on Jan. 29, 1994.

When she was found, there was no missing persons report and the Santa Cruz police did not know who the teen was. They did know that she had a heart tattooed on her left hand and she had been bludgeoned to death with probably a steel pipe that crushed her skull. Also, police believed she had been trying to runaway from someone before she died.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The case remained an open homicide case for almost twenty years. Over the years Kori was nicknamed Pogonip Jane and the police tried to identify her. In 2010, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported on the case in hopes to find out who she was.

A petite white girl in her late teens, Pogonip Jane had cut her brown hair to a 3-inch chop and painted her fingernails pink. She had a tiny heart tattooed between her left thumb and index finger.

Jane probably had braces as a kid and had a few cavities, which a dentist filled with porcelain, a forensic anthropologist determined.

In the last six months of her life, she traveled the Central Coast between Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz, according to isotopic hair analysis done at the University of Texas.

It wasn’t until DNA submitted in 2008 led to the match of a family member of Kori’s in October 2013 by the California Department of Justice laboratory, that she was identified.

Added to the delay of Kori’s identity may also have been the lack of a missing person report filed by the family. For unknown reasons they did not inform the police she had been missing until 2007.

Wayne White, a Tennessee resident and his son Greg, who has passed, have been persons of interest in this case, Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark told CBS news. They were seen traveling with Kori around the time of her death.

The police want to find who murdered Kori and are asking the public to come forward if they remember seeing Kori around Santa Cruz in 1993.

Private Detective Former Maysville Police Officer Indicted for Theft

The former executive director of the Buffalo Trace/Gateway Narcotics Task Force was indicted today for stealing public funds.

According to the indictment returned today by a federal grand jury in Lexington, in the two-and-a-half-year period that 52 year-old Timothy George Fegan of Germantown, Kentucky, served as the task force’s director, he wrongfully appropriated thousands of dollars in cash that was in the care, custody, and control of the task force. The indictment alleges that Fegan took cash proceeds that task force agents seized during drug investigations and money that the task force kept on hand to perform controlled drug buys.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

The Buffalo Trace/Gateway Narcotics Task Force was organized by several county and city governments and was responsible for the investigation of drug crimes in various northern and eastern Kentucky counties. The task force was funded by federal and state grants and funds contributed by the county and city governments that formed it. The task force’s base of operations was in Maysville, Kentucky, and Fegan served there as the task force’s executive director from April 2010 until November 2012.

Kerry B. Harvey, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Perrye Turner, Special Agent in Charge, FBI, jointly announced the indictment.

The investigation preceding the indictment was conducted by the FBI and the Kentucky State Police. The indictment was presented to the grand jury by Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew T. Boone.

A date for Fegan to appear in court has not yet been scheduled. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 for each charge. However, any sentence following a conviction would be imposed by the Court after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statutes.

Any indictment is an accusation only. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Private Detective Louisville Felon Sentenced for Armed Robbery

David J. Hale, United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky, announced the sentencing today of a Louisville man to 25 years in prison, followed by a period of three years’ supervised release, for the armed robbery of a Louisville convenience store and discharging a firearm during the course of the robbery. The federal prosecution stems from Project Recoil, the ongoing partnership of multiple law enforcement agencies, developed by U.S. Attorney Hale, Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Wine, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell, LMPD Chief Steve Conrad, ATF Special Agent in Charge Stuart Lowrey, FBI Special Agent in Charge Perrye Turner, and U.S. Marshal James Clark to maximize penalties for the most violent repeat offenders and to reduce violent crime in our community.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Since the announcement of Project Recoil in July 2013 the U.S. Attorney’s Office has brought federal charges against 10 defendants connected to the armed robberies of 27 metro Louisville businesses. Numerous additional defendants have been charged in Jefferson Circuit Court.

“Convicted felons who commit violent gun crimes in Jefferson County will face a collaborative and determined law enforcement effort. I’m proud of the efforts of the dedicated police officers, federal agents and state and county prosecutors and federal prosecutors working together on Project Recoil. Our community benefits from this effective collaboration,” stated U.S. Attorney Hale.

“The partnership of local, state, and federal law enforcement through Project Recoil has not only led to 10 defendants being indicted in federal court but to numerous gun and violent crimes being discussed by multiple agencies on a weekly basis. These open lines of communication have led to over a thousand guns being seized in the last year and over one hundred cases involving defendants with serious records and pending gun charges to be discussed, indicted, and swiftly prosecuted in state court,” stated Thomas Wine, Commonwealth’s Attorney.

“This conviction sends a very strong message that federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies are working together to make Louisville a safer community. Anyone contemplating a gun-related crime should realize the possible consequences,” stated Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad.

“This conviction and sentence should send a very clear message—violent gun crimes and the illegal possession, use, or trafficking of firearms will not be tolerated. Together, we are aggressively investigating and prosecuting these armed predators to make our community safer,” said ATF Special Agent in Charge Stuart Lowrey.

“Project Recoil is an excellent example of law enforcement’s commitment to cooperation and collaboration, the most effective weapon against crime,” said Perrye K. Turner, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Kentucky.

Dorris Trice, III, age 32, was sentenced on Thursday by Senior U.S. District Judge Charles R. Simpson, III after pleading guilty to a three-count federal indictment. Trice was previously convicted of state charges in Jefferson Circuit Court, including second-degree burglary on October 26, 2000; second-degree escape on June 10, 2002; and third degree burglary on October 20, 2010. In U.S. District Court, Trice admitted that on March 3, 2013, he possessed and fired a Charter Arms Undercover.38 Special during the robbery of the Park Food Mart, located at North 19th Street in Louisville. The federal robbery charge was brought pursuant to the Hobbs Act, which criminalizes robberies that affect interstate commerce.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Randy Ream and Amanda E. Gregory and was investigated by the Louisville Metro Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Wrongful Death Wolfe County Man Sentenced in Death of Cousin

A Wolfe County man was sentenced to 40 years in prison accused in the death of his cousin.

Lloyd Bryant pled guilty to murder and other charges in the violent stabbing death of 44-year-old Robert Bryant, who made the mistake of letting his unemployed cousin live with him.

Three months in, police say Lloyd and his then girlfriend, Rebecca Wright, turned on Bryant, stabbing him at least 15 times and slitting his throat before stealing his vehicle. A crime now three years later, loved ones still don’t understand.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“You killed my dad who was your family, and I hope it drives you nuts everyday,” said Andrea Bryant, the victim’s daughter. “Instead of the 40 years, I’d rather have him have the remorse.”

Lloyd Bryant will testify against his ex Rebecca Wright in her murder trial next year.
