Wrongful Death Danville Triple Murder Investigation Continues

Seven days have passed since someone shot and killed three people in a Danville business. While police continue to search for clues, family members continue to hold out hope the killer will be found.

“It’s just figuring out where to go from here,” said Tony Hockensmith, whose brother, Michael, and sister-in-law, Angie, were shot and killed along with business client Daniel Smith in the Hockensmiths’ Danville shop.

“At this point it’s healing. The family’s got to heal. We’ve got to make sure to give good quality of life to the children,” said Tony who says since the murder the community has shown and outpouring of love and support.

“Our gratitude to them is unsurpassed. There’s no amount of gratitude we could give to these people,” he said.

But as time continues to pass, Tony and his family want to make sure the case doesn’t go cold and Michael and Angie’s killer is brought to justice.

“In the end, he’ll pay. I just hope he doesn’t have the opportunity to harm anyone else,” said Tony.

Danville Police Chief Tony Gray tells LEX 18 they continue to follow up on tips but have no new information to release. The suspect is thought to be a heavyset white man, 40 to 50 years old, last seen wearing a green jacket and possibly a fake beard. Police still want to hear from people who might have seen the man driving a gray or silver minivan. He may have been at the store the day before.

Tony says he’s confident police will find the person responsible for his brother’s murder.

“They’re after this guy. They’re working hard and they want him as much as we do,” he said.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has offered a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever shot the three.

Wrongful Death Man Goes to Trial for 1984 CT Kiling

A Connecticut man charged with killing his wife in 1984 went on trial Thursday, three years after her skeletal remains were found under a barn floor on their former property in Newtown.

John Heath, 70, of Bridgewater, is being tried in Danbury Superior Court. He said he’s innocent and doesn’t know what happened to his wife, Elizabeth, when she vanished in 1984, shortly after he filed for divorce. The couple’s daughter was 4 at the time.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Jordan Wright, of Redding, the current owner of Heath’s former property in Newtown, testified Thursday that he and his father found skeletal remains in 2010 after tearing up the barn floor, The News-Times reported (http://bit.ly/1fJAcA6 ). Officials later determined the remains were those of Elizabeth Heath.

Wright said he tore up the floor because it was rotted. He found a dry well underneath.

“And in that we found a garbage bag and a human femur,” he said.

The medical examiner’s office determined that Elizabeth Heath died from blows to the head.

Jurors were shown several dozen images of the skeletal remains. A state police detective testified they were wrapped in bedding and garbage bags and other items found in the well.

Elizabeth Heath’s sister-in-law told police that Elizabeth feared her husband was going to kill her and said that if anything happened to her, “you know that John did it,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Former Newtown police Detective Robert Tbardzik testified that John Heath filed a missing person report about his wife in 1984 and said she disappeared with only the clothes she was wearing and $600.

A year later, Heath married a woman who babysat for his daughter, authorities said.

He was arrested after the remains were found.

Identity Theft College Students At High Risk

College campuses are full of students ready to soak up new information. But that high concentration of young people with good credit scores also makes college campuses targets for thieves trying to steal information.

“As a matter of fact, you’re more likely to get your identity stolen than your car stolen and according got the F.T.C., college students tend to be the most vulnerable,” said Anthony DaBreo, the Vice President and Manager of  the Indianapolis Branch of Erie Insurance. He said every three seconds someone’s identity is stolen.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

College students are vulnerable because they get flooded with credit card offers in the mail or online, and sometimes have a hard time distinguishing fake ones from reputable ones.

Many students shop online or use their phones and laptops in public places which makes them susceptible to “shoulder surfers,” people who snap a picture of someone’s informatoin while it’s up on a computer screen.

“With a little bit of information, they can have their accounts wiped out, new accounts set up in their names, credit cards can be set up in their names, they can even actually have fraudulent tax filings done with that information,” said DaBreo.

At The University of Indianapolis, incoming freshman are warned about the dangers of illegal downloads and told about safe online practices. Information Systems courses also offer lessons about privacy issues and identity theft risks. Some students said they take precautions.

“Most of the time when I buy something online I will shred the receipts and I don’t carry any of my personal information with me, like my social security card or anything like that,” said UIndy student Heather Peters.

DeBreo said it’s also smart to shred credit card offers mailed to you so they don’t end up in the wrong hands.  Putting a password lock on electronic devices and getting a lock box to store personal documents can add another layer of protection. He said be wary of posting information on social media like pets names or the name of the street you grew up on because those are often used as passwords or security question answers.

For parents, purchasing identity theft insurance might be a good move, said DaBreo, because many college students are still linked to their parents banking, checking or credit card accounts. Most insurance companies offer some form of identity theft protection policy.

Private Detective ‘Bad Hair Bandit’ and Wife Sentenced

A Williamsburg, Ky., couple was sentenced Thursday for robbing numerous banks in eastern Kentucky and Tennessee.

U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove sentenced 32 year-old Jason Fox, aka “The Bad Hair Bandit,” to 20 years, for seven separate counts of bank robbery and armed bank robbery. His wife, Tasha Fox, 28, was sentenced to 10 years, for aiding and abetting in several of those robberies. Both defendants will also be on supervised release for five years, after their prison terms are completed. Judge Van Tatenhove also ordered Jason Fox to pay $80,028.30 in restitution; Tasha Fox is jointly and severally responsible for $57,956.88 of that restitution amount.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

In a guilty plea earlier this year, Jason Fox admitted that, in 2011, he robbed a total of seven banks located in Barbourville, Ky., Corbin, Ky., Pine Knot, Ky., Williamsburg, Ky., Jellico, Tenn., and LaFollette, Tenn. In five of those robberies, he possessed a semi-automatic handgun; Fox sometimes brandished or pointed the gun at bank tellers as he demanded money.

The banks Fox robbed include: Commercial Bank, in Barbourville, on June 17, 2011; Bank of McCreary County, in Pine Knot, on July 5, 2011; Forcht Bank, in Barbourville, on August 19, 2011; Hometown Bank, in Corbin, on October 25, 2011; the Wal-Mart branch of the L&N Federal Credit Union, in Williamsburg, on December 1, 2011; First Volunteer Bank, in Jellico, Tenn., on June 9, 2011; and the Y-12 Federal Credit Union, in LaFollette, Tenn., on October 28, 2011. In four of these bank robberies, Tasha Fox drove the “getaway” car for her husband. She also pleaded guilty earlier this year.

Under federal law, both defendants will have to serve at least 85 percent of their respective prison sentence.

Missing Person Madison County Man Missing After House Fire

Firefighters in northern Madison County say they fear the man who lives in a cabin that burned early Thursday morning might be inside.

The man, whose ex-wife has identified as Walt Liebengood, is still missing, because firefighters say they have not yet been able to search the ruins of the home because it is still too hot.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Neighbors spotted the cabin on Whitlock Road, near the Kentucky River, in flames around 12:45 a.m. The fire was so intense, it spread to a nearby car, damaging it.

Neighbors say both of Liebengood’s vehicles are on the property, leading them to believe he was home at the time of the fire.
