Private Detective Beta Bot Malware Blocks Users Anti-Virus Programs

The FBI is aware of a new type of malware known as Beta Bot. Cyber criminals use Beta Bot to target financial institutions, e-commerce sites, online payment platforms, and social networking sites to steal sensitive data such as log-in credentials and financial information. Beta Bot blocks computer users’ access to security websites and disables anti-virus programs, leaving computers vulnerable to compromise.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Beta Bot infection vectors include an illegitimate but official looking Microsoft Windows message box named “User Account Control” that requests a user’s permission to allow the “Windows Command Processor” to modify the user’s computer settings. If the user complies with the request, the hackers are able to exfiltrate data from the computer. Beta Bot is also spread via USB thumb drives or online via Skype, where it redirects the user to compromised websites.

*Windows Command Process message box

Although Beta Box masquerades as the “User Account Control” message box, it is also able to perform modifications to a user’s computer. If the above pop-up message or a similar prompt appears on your computer and you did not request it or are not making modifications to your system’s configuration, do not authorize “Windows Command Processor” to make any changes.

Remediation strategies for Beta Bot infection include running a full system scan with up-to-date anti-virus software on the infected computer. If Beta Bot blocks access to security sites, download the latest anti-virus updates or a whole new anti-virus program onto an uninfected computer, save it to a USB drive and load and run it on the infected computer. It is advisable to subsequently re-format the USB drive to remove any traces of the malware.

Insurance Fraud Greenville, MS Man Charged

A Washington County man has been charged Monday with multiple counts of insurance fraud, according to Attorney General Jim Hood.

Oliver Johnson, 31, of Greenville, has been arrested by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office following indictment on three counts of insurance fraud involving property claims.

The indictment alleges that between the dates of March 10, 2012, to February 26, 2013, Johnson “did knowingly and willfully make false, fictitious or fraudulent statements and/or submit false, fictitious or fraudulent documents to Progressive Insurance Company, Permanent General Assurance and GEICO Insurance Company.”

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Johnson is accused of signing up for insurance, never paying the initial premium, and then claiming to have damage to his vehicle which was covered under the policy. The case against Johnson alleges that the damage to his vehicle occurred prior to the effective date of the policy, therefore causing his claims to be fraudulent.

Johnson is alleged to have submitted false accident reports as well as fraudulent bank records. He was not paid on either of the claims.

If convicted, Johnson faces up to three years for each count in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. As with all cases, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

This case is being investigated by Trey Mardis and will be prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Stanley Alexander of the Mississippi Attorney General’s Public Integrity Division

Missing Person Warren, Michigan Man Still Missing

Family and friends of Eric Brescher of Warren, who was last seen July 27 when he was dropped off at his home in the 13000 block of Georgiana, are worried he may be dead and buried somewhere in Detroit.

They say Brescher, 36, who used to dabble in drugs, may have gone back to Detroit to buy crack cocaine when he was dropped off after a concert. Friends and family fear he may have been killed for his cellphone and cash, and dumped in a field with high weeds and debris or left in an abandoned home in Detroit.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“Eric was a troubled young man, but he was a good, honest person,” said his mother, Cindy Basar.

“We often check with the morgues, hospitals, friends and asked Detroit (police) for help,” said Warren Detective Lt. Heidi Metz. “We are still investigating Mr. Brescher’s disappearance and are asking the public for help in trying to find him.”

Eric’s sister was the last to hear from him on July 25 when they exchanged text messages. Family members are afraid someone knows where he is but is keeping the information from police.

“We’ve tried to call Eric but some guy answers his cellphone and hangs up,” his mother said. “We are worried. We are very worried.”

Friends James Garnett and James Harnett, both Warren residents, had nothing but praise for Brescher. They said he may have used drugs but never missed work and was an honest and sincere man.

Garnett said he and Harnett dropped off Brescher at 12:30 a.m. after a concert in downtown Detroit and expected to see him in the morning to go to work.

Garnett said Bresher just disappeared.

“He was my best friend,” Garnett said. “He was a wonderful person who lived life to the fullest.”

Eric, a graduate of Lincoln High School, is single and owns a maintenance company.

Harnett said he hopes someone comes forward with helpful information.

Harnett said he has been passing out pictures of Bresher south of Eight Mile where he was seen walking between Groesbeck and Schoenherr, east of Vince’s Bakery & Party Store.

“Some guy said it was him,” Harnett said. “He said he has known him for years.”

Crime Stoppers of Michigan is offering a reward up to $1,000 for information leading to finding Eric. Those with information can call 800-speakup and remain anonymous.

Private Detective NJ Man Lost $12k for Engagement Ring While Riding Motorcycle

A New Jersey commercial fisherman who saved nearly $12,000 in cash for an engagement ring lost it when it fluttered from his backpack while he was riding a motorcycle.

Matthew Camp, 32, said the sad tale could have a happy ending.

A highway cleanup crew on the Garden State Parkway has found $4,000 of the cash and now another person has stepped forward to say he found another $5,300 and wants to return it on Wednesday night.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Camp said he lost the money on Sept. 9 after cashing a $12,000 check earned during a good scallop run on his boat, the F.V. Nancy Elizabeth out of Cape May, New Jersey.

Camp stuffed the money into a backpack, which had a broken zipper, and planned to ask longtime girlfriend Tabitha Bohn to marry him. He rode his motorcycle to the dock and, while changing into work clothes, discovered the cash was missing, Bohn said.

“It was heartbreaking,” said Bohn, who with Camp has two children and is raising two others from previous relationships. “He was finally going to break down and buy me a ring.”

Camp raced back up the parkway, where the crew that found $4,000 offered a description of a new model silver truck whose occupant also picked up some cash.

The truck occupant, who wants to remain anonymous, recently contacted Camp after reading about the incident in the local newspaper. He agreed to turn over his found treasure to Camp later on Wednesday.

As for fishing? Camp was supposed to go out on Wednesday, but the boat’s captain delayed the trip to give Camp time to get the cash back.

Private Detective Lincoln County Man Arrested for Attempted Murder

An LEX 18 news crew was there Wednesday night when a Pulaski County man was arrested for allegedly trying to murder a couple in Lincoln County.

The victims said Mark Shellwalter shot at them while they drove in front of their Waynesburg home Sunday night. On Wednesday a judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

“Scared, scared something was going to happen to my kids,” said Christina Baker. Since Sunday she and her family have been worried about who might be lurking outside their home.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

“They call him ‘Whiskey’ but his name is Mark … He’s my moms ex,” said Baker. She claims that Mark Shellwalter has been stalking them, and this time he went too far as they drove home.

Baker and her boyfriend, Scott Seizemore, said Shellwalter hid in a fence outside their home, and fired a bullet into their truck. “About shot me right in the head, didn’t even know it was coming,” said Seizemore.

The bullet narrowly missed Baker and her boyfriend as it ricocheted off the windshield. They later found it in the truck, but as they sped off in panic they said they knew who the gunman was.

“I mean I know who he is, I couldn’t mistake him for anyone else,” said Baker.

“I didn’t see him at the time, I saw a gun flash beside my head. But, after I took off in the truck after him he came out on the four-wheeler and I got behind him,” said Seizemore.

He tried to catch Shellwalter and called the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department for help. “They found the gun, they found the four-wheeler, they got it all in possession but he still wasn’t locked up,” said Baker.

Deputies said they couldn’t arrest Shellwalter at that point because he was back in Pulaski County and out of their jurisdiction. However, after days of investigation they finally had enough evidence to pick him up on Wednesday.

LEX 18 crews were there as he was taken to jail. However, Shellwalter did not wish to comment on the situation.

Investigators said the four wheeler he was driving was also stolen. The Lincoln County Sheriff said this is a confusing case and they are still gathering evidence.

Missing Person Abducted Georgia Teen Found Safe

In an apparent random home invasion, robbers broke in, demanded money and jewelry and when they were told there was none, abducted a 14-year-old girl and killed the family dog, authorities in the Atlanta area said.

Missing: Ayvani Hope Perez/AP Photo

Perez was found safe on Wednesday, a day after her abduction.

Two men, described as wearing black clothing and armed with handguns, pried open a back door of the home in the Ellenwood area around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, demanding the items, Clayton County police Officer Phong Nguyen said. The home invasion was apparently random, Nguyen said told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“It didn’t appear that they knew each other,” he said of the suspects and victims. “They just moved in about a month ago.”

Ayvani’s mother had her daughter and her 15-year-old son hiding inside the home, but the intruders were able to find them, police said in a statement. The men abducted Ayvani with no explanation, police said.

The crime happened on a cul-de-sac in Ellenwood, a small community about 10 miles southeast of Atlanta, police said. The neighborhood is on the northern edge of Clayton County, just south of the DeKalb County line.

Tuesday evening, more than 150 people gathered in a circle and held hands in prayer at the candlelight vigil at Dutchtown High School in Hampton, the Atlanta newspaper reported. Many teens there – holding posters with Ayvani’s name and pictures of them with her – were her classmates at the school.
