Wrongful Death Man Gets Life in Prison for Pepper Grinder Murder

Drama in a Dearborn County courtroom today as a murder victim’s family has the last word before her killer receives his sentence. The sentencing of Steve Stephenson comes more than 14 months after police found 67-year-old grandmother Leigh Jennings beaten to death in her Aurora home.

Local 12’s Deborah Dixon tells us what Jennings’ family wanted Stephenson to know.

Steve Stephenson chose not to make a statement before sentencing. But Leigh Jennings’ friends and family had plenty to say. One of her sons shouted “I hope you rot in hell.” A friend of Leigh called him a monster. Jennings’ grand daughter told him he took away her son’s opportunity to learn from her grandmother like she did.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Victoria Siebe, Granddaughter: “A lot about philosophy, she had a huge impact on my philosophy, unfortunate my son will not get the same privilege.”

Jennings’ son, Ryan Siebe, read to Stephenson from a sympathy card.

Ryan Siebe, Son: “We can honestly say we know what you’re going through, we hope you have answers, we pray for our family with sympathy the children of Bill and Peggy Stephenson.”

Bill and Peggy are Steve Stephenson’s aunt and uncle. Their murders have not been solved.

“I wanted him to understand its not just my family and friends affected. He damaged his family.”

Neighbors who found Leigh’s decomposing body talked of the bloody image of their friend they now have to live with.

Tracey Doss: Found Leigh’s Body: “Her biggest thing was, we’re only human, but I think it took a non-human act to end such a beautiful life.”

Bryan Doss, Found Leigh’s Body: “I’m glad for Ryan and Brandon I’m the one who found her.”

Stephenson didn’t react to anything that was said or to the sentence… life in prison without parole.

“This is unusual, Stephenson said in the pre-sentence report that he wanted more security, so the prosecution agreed to a maximum-security prison.”

Aaron Negangard, Dearborn County Prosecutor: “23 hours lock down, one hour rec time walking around in circle. I don’t think he understands what he requested, but I hope he gets what he requested.”

Stephenson will likely end up in the Michigan City Maximum Security Penitentiary. One relative said today it gives her comfort to know he will take his last breath in his cell.

Stephenson’s attorneys say they’ll appeal the conviction.

Insurance Fraud Former VA Agent Gets Jail Time

A former Charlottesville, Va.-area insurance agent was sentenced to seven months in jail after pleading guilty to insurance fraud.

Graham Hutson Messer, 32, of Bremo Bluff, Va., was charged in a federal indictment last year with embezzling funds intended for insurance premiums.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Messer operated as an independent agent and offered insurance and insurance products for sale to clients in Virginia. He purported to sell insurance through several companies, including Farmers Insurance Group of Companies, Chartis Inc., Nautilus Insurance Group, Granite State Insurance Company and Main Street America Group, according to officials.

According to prosecutors, Messer would instruct his clients to send insurance premium payments directly to him. He then kept many of the funds and never sent them to insurers, leaving clients to believe they had insurance coverage.

In addition to time in prison, Messer must repay more than $60,000 to his victims and serve three years of supervision, seven months of which will be home detention.

“Mr. Messer diverted money from his clients that they had paid in order to obtain insurance,” United States Attorney Timothy J. Heaphy said. “His criminal conduct left his victims uninsured and placed the financial futures of many local families in jeopardy.

Arson Investigation Turns Wrongful Death When Burned Body Found in Louisville

Authorities are conducting a death investigation after a suspicious fire in the 100 block of South 33rd Street.

According to police, a call came in just after 2 a.m. when a passing motorist said they smelled heavy smoke in the area. Residents described smoke as pouring from the back of the home. “ When I walked to the back the whole house was collapsing and the I seen the fire department running through the house. They wrapped somebody in a sheet,” Edward Johnson said.

After firefighters extinguished the fire, they found the body of 70 year-old Houston McCorkle in the front of the house that was identified as the resident and was living alone.

Sasha Richmond, who just moved to the neighborhood recently, meet McCorkle just a few weeks ago when he introduced himself to her. She described his as a kind man. “He just came over and asked me and my sister what are names was and welcomed us to the neighborhood. I remember him saying he had a big collection of movies and invited us over to get some anytime. He was really nice.”

Police say the condition of the victim’s body indicated foul play and that has left resident uneasy. “ I thought it was an accident. No one deserves to die like that. It’s sad,” said Jessica Wadlington.
