Insurance Fraud Warrants Issued For 26 Accused in $500K

Twenty-six people have been charged in a $500,000 insurance fraud ring centered in Columbus, Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens announced Wednesday during a news conference.

Devonta Waddy, 24, of Lumpkin, Ga., was identified as the leader of the insurance fraud ring and remained on the loose as of Wednesday night. The group collectively faces 326 charges, including insurance fraud, racketeering, theft by deception, identify fraud and exploitation of the elderly.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

“This fraud ring staged phony accidents and filed fraudulent claims collecting thousands of dollars,” Hudgens said. “I said my office was going to be tough on insurance fraud, and hopefully these arrests will send a strong message that I am serious about cracking down on insurance fraud.”

The scheme was conducted from 2013 to 2016.

The following agencies assisted in the 16-month investigation: the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, the Stewart County Sheriff’s Office, the Lumpkin Police Department, the Richland Police Department and the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Insurance companies victimized by the scam included GEICO, State Farm, Nationwide, SafeAuto, Allstate, Progressive, USAA, Georgia Farm Bureau Mutual, Safeway, Everest National, Direct Auto and The General Insurance.

The Muscogee County District Attorney’s Office will be prosecuting the cases.

Hudgens said suspects would purchase liability insurance on a vehicle then intentionally strike another vehicle and accept responsibility for it, he added.

They allegedly reported the wrecks to their insurance company but not law enforcement. They filed more than $500,000 worth of false claims, but only received $155,925 in payouts from 12 insurance companies, Hudgens said.

“We’ve had the same vehicles involved in seven or eight claims showing different owners when they all belong to one individual,” said Sherry Mowell, the chief investigator of the Georgia Insurance Commissioner’s fraud unit.

Hudgens said companies aren’t the only ones affected by insurance scam.

In 2016, it costs every insurance policy holder about $400 to $700 to pay fraudulent claims processed through their company.

“The only way insurance companies get money is from us, individually,” he said. “Every time they have to payout a fraudulent claim, it costs everyone.”

Wrongful Death Woman Charged in Deadly DUI Said Someone Else Was Driving

The woman charged in a DUI crash in Lexington that killed a Louisville police officer and UK employee first told officers that an unknown person was driving her car, according to court documents obtained by LEX 18.

Police say that Suzanne Whitlow had a blood-alcohol content of three times the legal limit when officers say she crashed her car on South Upper Street, hitting and killing UK employee Timothy Moore and Louisville Detective Jason Schweitzer. Both men were on the sidewalk when hit by the car.

The crash happened back in October.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

A grand jury indicted Whitlow in February on manslaughter, DUI, and persistent felony offender charges.

Whitlow’s attorney wants the blood test results thrown out. Whitlow’s blood was drawn at the hospital under a judge’s court order.

Court documents say that her attorney filed a motion back in April in which he argues ‘the blood test results that were obtained were done so without the consent of the defendant and in violation of her rights.”

In the prosecutors’ response earlier this month, they say the blood drawn ‘was lawfully obtained as a search warrant and court order are synonymous.’

Additional court records spell out why police got the court order to take her blood. An officer states he ‘immediately observed a strong odor of alcoholic beverages’ and that ‘Whitlow exhibited very slurred speech and her ability to communicate was choppy’. The officer also stated ‘she explained an unknown person was driving her vehicle.’

But then she said she may have been driving.

In her arrest citation, Whitlow told officers she had consumed Vodka drinks the night of the crash.

According to court records, police found a beer can on the driver’s floorboard and a pack of beer behind the driver’s seat.

The hearing on the evidence is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m.

Fraud Investigation New Twist on Phone Scam Using “Microsoft Windows” Name

Central Kentucky residents are receiving phone calls from scammers claiming to be with “Microsoft” giving a dire warning; renew your Microsoft license key or your computer will go dark.

The Better Business Bureau heard from a Lexington senior local who fell for the scam. The woman followed instructions from the caller allowing him access to her Windows laptop. He told her to go to a nearby retailer to buy iTunes cards in the amount of $300 to cover a “3 year license fee.” She did so, and read the numbers off the back of the cards to the caller.  When the con artist asked for additional money, she suspected a scam and hung up.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

BBB also heard from a Bourbon County resident who received the call but did not fall for it.  The scam can also occur via a “pop up” warning while a user is online. Allowing a scammer access to a computer can allow them to place viruses on the machine and steal personal and financial information.

Cyber experts say these scammers are counting on the fact that PC users don’t realize that most software license keys on an individual’s computer won’t expire. Certain software, like Microsoft Office suite might expire, but the operating system on a computer should not.

Microsoft warns of these scams on their website, stating “Microsoft will never proactively reach out to you to provide unsolicited PC or technical support. Any communication we have with you must be initiated by you.”

To add to the confusion, the scammers that claim to be from “Microsoft” tell victims on the phone that they can remove the viruses from your computer, but will do so for a fee.

BBB urges the public to hang up on these calls and ignore voice messages. Never pay unknown callers through untraceable methods like iTunes or other reloadable cards. Victims needing to hire a local computer service company to check their machines can contact BBB at www.bbb.org/lexington or (859) 259-1008 for names of BBB Accredited computer service businesses they can trust.

Missing Person Body of Missing 12 Year Old Girl Found in Pensacola

The body of a missing 12-year-old girl was found in the waters near Pensacola on Monday afternoon.

Naomi Jones was last seen at her home at Aspen Village Apartments at around noon on Wednesday. Her body was found at 4 p.m. on Monday near Ashland Avenue and Detroit Street.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The same day Jones went missing, a family member contacted the sheriff’s department and missing person’s report was filed. Sheriff David Morgan said multiple authorities have assisted in the search for the child.  A team of volunteers canvassed the area where Jones was last seen.

Morgan said there are multiple suspects in this case, but didn’t give an exact amount. The investigation is still ongoing as investigators question persons of interest to figure out what happened to Jones following her disappearance.

“It’s a moment like this on life that I am reminded that life is completely and totally unfair,” Morgan said during a press conference. “You can do everything right, and things still turn out wrong.”
