Wrongful Death Police Looking For Tips in Double Murder

Police in Richmond are trying to generate more information about a 2014 unsolved murder.

On June 27, 2014, Horace Evans made a gruesome discovery inside of a home not far from Main Street. The door had been knocked in. Inside the home were the bodies of his brother, Avery Evans, and Karen Simpson. They had been murdered.

Neighbor Leonard Harrison has lived on that street for 45 years. He remembers that day, but he told LEX 18 he tries hard to forget it.

“I kind of try to put it out of my mind,” he said.

Police unveiled a billboard last year with the victims’ pictures, offering a $10,000 reward for information on the murders.

No strong tips ever came in.

Officers told LEX 18 that they plan on putting up a new billboard in the near future. At this point, they can’t say if the murders were random or targeted killings.

“We don’t know that’s what we need to find out. There are things people might know, we have to have information but we haven’t gotten a whole lot,” said Major Steve Gregg.

Private Detective: Stabbing Happens During Burglary

Police say that a man burglarized a home and then stabbed a neighbor during a struggle.

The break-in happened around noon on Thursday at 718 Holmes Street. According to Major Robert Warfel with the Frankfort Police Department, a neighbor called the homeowner who saw someone knock on the front door then go to the back of the home.

Chad Maupin, the next-door neighbor who was watching the criminal, told LEX 18 that his neighborly duties kicked in quickly.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

“My instinct was to turn around and go look and he kicked the back door open,” Maupin mentioned.

After Maupin called his neighbor to tell him what was he was seeing, the homeowner came home from work to find the man in his home going through his belongings. Once a physical altercation began, Chad Maupin says he went in to his neighbor’s home, joining in on the fight.

“When I had him down, he pulled out the knife and stuck me a couple of times in the hand and, told me if I don’t let him up he’s going to kill me. So I backed up and shielded myself and he went out the back door.”

Maupin says the criminal ran down the street after he released him. Although the fight left Maupin with only cuts on his hands and arms, he says he is grateful his neighbor wasn’t harmed during the break-in.

“We kind of look after each other, me and him do. He watches when I’m gone and I watch when he’s gone. It’s what neighbors are supposed to do,” Maupin added.

Major Warfel says witnesses described the burglar as a tall white male with a thin build, wearing a gray t-shirt and dark pants.

Private Detective: Accused Scammer Back in KY

A man wanted for allegedly scamming people out of money in more than half a dozen counties is back in a Kentucky jail after being extradited from Oklahoma.

For two years, Randal Long has been serving time in Oklahoma after he was arrested for stealing heavy duty equipment there.

“We had entered him as wanted, basically in 2014, and didn’t know where he was at till we received a call from Oklahoma police,” said Chief Deputy Allen Peel.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Long was wanted in Kentucky for a parole violation stemming from a string of scams in 2011. Long is suspected of targeting people in Jessamine, Casey, Russell, Pulaski, Garrard, Boyle, and Washington counties.

“He made a trail through central Kentucky of taking money from elderly, mostly elderly victims, and promising to do work and not returning to come back to do the work,” said Peel.

One of his victims, a Jessamine County Korean War veteran, spoke with LEX 18 in 2011 after losing nearly $1,500 in the scam.

“He called me for the last few years, really wanting justice,” said Peel.

The man never got the justice he wanted. He passed away in April.

“My victim was very adamant on seeing justice to be done. We still think the ends of justice needed to be done by transporting him back to Kentucky so he can face our charges, along with the other counties’ charges,” said Peel.

Wrongful Death Body Found in Burned Out Trailer

Deputies from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that a body was inside of a burned out trailer south of Burnside.

They found the crime scene inside of the camper trailer off US 27. The death is being investigated as a homicide.  According to Major Jeff Hancock, It appears that perpetrators attempted to conceal the crime by intentionally setting fire to the camper trailer.

“We do know that it’s a homicide. And, whoever did it tried to conceal what they had done by setting the place on fire,” Maj. Hancock stated. “I’m sure they did it in an attempt to cover up any kind of evidence or anything like that. But, it didn’t work.”

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Thomas Stevens, a nearby neighbor of the man who was killed, told LEX 18 News his friend deserves justice.

“He liked being around people. He came up here… probably every other night and ate supper with us. He didn’t deserve nobody to hurt him.”

While the family of the deceased man continues to learn about the crime, Stevens mentioned that he would be sending prayers their way during the investigation process.

“I don’t know how his family is going to handle it, but it’d be hard if I had lost mine,” Stevens added. “May God bless his family. You know, they’re going to need some help.”

At this time, the name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of the next of kin. Major Hancock told LEX 18 News that the man’s name could be released Thursday morning.
