A second Eastern Kentucky deputy jailer has been convicted in the death of a beaten inmate.

William Howell, 60, was convicted after four days of trial last week.

Investigators say Howell and Wayne Hickman, who were both guards at the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard, beat Larry Trent then failed to get him medical aid.

Trent later died from his injuries.

Howell is set to be sentenced in August..

Fishermen saw the body of a Corbin man floating near a dam on Laurel Lake.

The body of James Robert Wagers, 24, was found in the water at 7:30 Monday morning close to Kampgrounds of America on East City Dam Road.

Wagers’ body had been there several days, but no missing person report has been filed.

There was no visible trauma. Wagers’ body has been sent to Frankfort for an autopsy.

Police arrested nearly two dozen people in an underage sex sting in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

Officers pretended to be teenagers online to lure the predators from all over metro Atlanta to meet and pay for sex, authorities said.

The joint “Operation Spring Cleaning” between the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Gwinnett County Police Department led to 23 arrests over five days last week and into the weekend. The operation had been in the works for months.

The 23 suspects are from all over metro Atlanta. Court records show that the men range in age from 19 to 48 and hold a variety of mostly blue-collar jobs including a janitor, warehouse workers, a mechanic, an electrician, an IT specialist, a software consultant and a construction worker. Several were unemployed.

Records show that one man is a member of the U.S. Air Force.

Authorities said the men face felony charges and said there could be additional charges coming.

People in a Scott County community are trying to make sense of a bizarre situation that left one woman fighting for her life, and her boyfriend in jail facing serious charges.

According to an arrest citation, 27-year-old Damou Bradley is charged with murder and assault.

“Just hard to grasp something like that happening right across the street from where you live, where you’re supposed to feel safe,” said neighbor Tina Cornwell.

Investigators say he called 911 a little before 11:30 Saturday night and said he had stabbed his girlfriend in the neck three times. When officers arrived at the home on Copper Kettle Path, they found the victim in a second floor bathroom with lacerations to her neck.

“Apparently there was no love there if you’re going to strangle and then stab someone,” said neighbor Charles Cornwell.

The story gets even more bizarre when Bradley allegedly told investigators he “put his faith in God”…arrest papers indicate he said he was told by God to kill his girlfriend. While in the shower he strangled her until she was unconscious, when she came to and he realized she was still alive..that is when he supposedly stabbed her.

“Stephen King-esque..I’m not saying that God didn’t talk to him but, I just don’t think that that’s the way God intended on bringing people up to him,” said Charles Cornwell.

The Cornwells live right across from where it all happened. They say they had never seen Bradley before,  and while they’re praying for the victim and her family, they’re left wondering if this all may have been prevented had Bradley sought psychiatric help

“God, I just pray for her and her family.  It’s just unbelievable. I just don’t know what’s wrong with people today,” said Tina Cornwell.

The identity or condition of the victim have not been released.

Lexington Police are searching for a man who may be connected to a string purse thefts and robberies.

Police say the suspect struck on Saturday at the Hamburg Pavilion.

Reportedly the man grabbed a woman’s purse, then when she tried to get it back the suspect ran over the woman’s leg and drove off.

Police have issued a Golden Alert for Gladys Yancey, 69.

Yancey left her home on Pigskin Road around 5 p.m. Saturday and was last seen in the Bell Farm area around 6:30 p.m.

She was driving a red/silver smart car with license plate # 608 WSX.

Yancey is suffering from dementia and needs medical attention. As a result of her medical conditions, she may respond to other last names: King, Cox, or Cooper.

Anyone sighting or with knowledge of the whereabouts of Yancey, is asked to call 911, McCreary County Emergency Management (606) 376-3770, or the Kentucky State Police (606) 878-6622.

UPDATE: Yancey has been found safe in Fentress County, TN and family is on the way to bring her home.

Shoppers witnessed quite the scene when a woman was arrested after crashing into a store.

It happened shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday at the Goodwill on Mapleleaf Drive.

Police said she crashed her SUV into a column on the side of the building. It caused minor damage.

She had a dog in the car with her that animal control had to pick up.

Police said she was intoxicated at the time of the crash. They arrested her for DUI.

A Raleigh day care worker is facing multiple child sex charges after having sex with a 12-year-old girl, according to court documents.

Bruce Edward Rogers, 20, of the 3100 block of Rocky Brook Crossing faces three felony child sex charges – statutory rape of a child by adult and two counts of indecent liberties with a child – after allegedly having sex with a 12-year-old girl between Jan. 1 and April 5, court documents show.

Raleigh police confirmed to CBS North Carolina that Rogers was employed at the Building Blocks Child Development Center on Swain Street at the time the incidents occurred.

Building Blocks is attached to Mount Sinai Holy Church of America on Swain Street in downtown Raleigh. Roger’s father is the pastor at the church and his mother runs Building Blocks, a neighbor confirmed to CBS North Carolina.

The Department of Health and Human Services said the day care was able to operate without a normal license because it was religiously affiliated. It is called on official terms a notice of compliance.

But on April 10, the North Carolina Division of Child Development and Early Education closed the day care when they issued a summary suspension. The Division said Building Blocks was not a safe and healthy environment for children.

The suspension was issued because Building Blocks allowed an employee with a criminal history around the children.

“Facility management also failed to obtain a criminal record check for the employee prior to employment, a repeated violation of child care requirements,” DHHS said in a statement to CBS North Carolina.

Police said the offenses occurred at the day care.

Rogers is currently being held in the Wake County Detention Center under a $550,000 secured bond.

The Darlington City Police Department says the 73-year-old man reported missing Thursday night is now safe.

According to Lt. Maureen Valazak, 73-year-old James Hunter went missing from Walmart in Darlington around 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Lt. Valazak confirms Friday morning that Hunter was located in the area shortly after being reported missing.

There was a particular concern for Hunter as he suffers from Dementia and Alzheimer’s. Police also say he is blind in his right eye.

Hunter is now home safe, according to his wife, who spoke with News13 on the phone Friday morning.
