WEST VALLEY CITY — Investigators were attempting Friday to identify a body found in a canal and figure out how he died.
Just before 7 a.m., a group of juveniles being walked to school by an adult spotted what appeared to be a body in the canal near 5800 South and 4100 West. Police were contacted, and a dive team was dispatched, said West Valley City Police Sgt. Mike Powell.
The dive team found the body of a male adult, partially submerged in the water and caught on debris, Powell said.

The victim was in his late 30s to early 40s, about 6-feet tall, 200-230 pounds and had dark hair that was longer than average, Powell said. The man was wearing a white, long-sleeve button-up shirt, blue jeans and black shoes.
As of noon Friday, investigators had not been able to identify the man.
Powell said the autopsy would be key in determining a cause of death. He estimated the man had been dead for 24 hours or less when his body was found.
