Arson Investigation Boys in Jackson, Mich. Set Playground Fire

JACKSON, Mich. (AP) — Two Michigan boys — ages 8 and 9 — could be charged with arson for a fire that destroyed a slide structure at a Jackson playground.

Jackson County Prosecutor Hank Zavislak told MLive.com for a story (http://bit.ly/Sr7XuP ) Saturday that he will issue petitions for the charges and bring the boys under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court.
Officials want to find out why the boys set the fire and what can be done to prevent similar behavior from occurring again, Zavislak said. They could be enrolled in an intervention program.

“These are very young children. It’s a whole different approach,” he said.
The boys told police they set the Aug. 25 fire at Partnership Park.
Devastated by the fire at her favorite playground, 6-year-old Akaysha Dempsey-Owens raised more than $100 in one day this month with a lemonade stand.
Local businesses and residents have started cleanup of the playground. Crews on Friday dismantled and threw away scrap metal left at the park.
“I think it’s important for that area to put that park back up so the kids can have a place to play that is safe,” said Ken Williams.
Williams’ Concord Excavating is expected to remove poles and other materials next month from the playground’s foundation.
