Wrongful Death Tenn. Man Arrested in KY After Running Over Woman

Deputies with the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office arrested James Paul Cook, 55, of McLemoresville, Tenn., Thursday night following the death of a Puryear, Tenn., woman in the Wildcat Beach area of the county.

Major Clayton Hendricks said Cook faces charges of murder, operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and leaving the scene of an accident.

Hendricks said Cook was located inside a blue van near the beach at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday. He said the van matched the description of a vehicle that was reported to have struck Desiree Moore, 37, near a driveway at 1029 Wildcat Drive about an hour earlier. Moore was taken to Murray-Calloway County Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Following an investigation, Hendricks said police allege Moore and Cook were in the van together when an argument developed between them, resulting in Moore leaving the vehicle and being ran over by the van at least two times.

“We received a call of a lady being hit by a vehicle and, once on the scene, we found the victim laying partially in the roadway and partially in the driveway. That’s when we were told that a blue van might be the vehicle involved and we began a search,” Hendricks said.

“Deputy Corey Keene then made a search of the area and discovered a blue van with the man we later found to be Cook inside.”

Moore was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. at MCCH by Coroner Rick Harris. Her body will be taken to Louisville today for an autopsy at the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office.

Harris said an exact cause will be determined at that time.

Hendricks said Deputy Gene Johnson and Sgt. Charles Tidwell were also involved in the case. Cook was lodged in the Calloway County Jail in Murray.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Calloway County Commonwealth Attorney’s and the Calloway County Coroner’s Office.
