A Michigan doctor who pleaded guilty to health insurance fraud has paid $3 million in fines, restitution and back taxes, and received a 13-month prison sentence.
Chyawan Bansil, 61, of Farmington Hills, pleaded guilty to health insurance fraud and money laundering for defrauding Medicare, Medicaid and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan of more than $1 million for test he did not perform.

As part of his settlement, Bansil paid $2.25 million in damages, forfeited $500,000 in assets and paid almost $250,000 in back taxes.
At sentencing, U.S. District Judge Robert Holmes Bell noted that Bansil violated the trust of patients and “worsened the health care crisis” in this country.
The fraud happened from February 2007 through January 2012.
