DeWitt, NY — The owner of a Syracuse gym is facing identity theft and forgery charges after an investigation by DeWitt police.

The victim, who is not being identified, was contacted by a collection agency that said a credit card account, which she was not aware she had, was in default, police said. The victim discovered the account was opened earlier in 2012 by using her identifying information, police said.

Justin M. Edmond, 32, of Syracuse, was charged today with forgery and identity theft, both felonies, police said.

Edmond owns Just In Shape Fitness, 215 Walton St., police said. Edmond asked the victim to work for him and she gave him all her personal identifying information when she filled out the job application, police said.

Shortly after she gave Edmond the completed application, the unauthorized credit card account was opened in the woman’s name, police said.

Edmond was arraigned in DeWitt Town Court and ordered held without bail at the Onondaga County Justice Center.

Investigators are trying to determine whether there were any more victims. Anyone with information can call Investigator Thomas Regan at 449-3640.
