A federal judge in Rhode Island on Monday sentenced a New Jersey sex offender to life in prison.
Donald Jones III was convicted in May of charges of interstate travel to engage in illicit sexual acts, aggravated sexual assault, enticement of a minor, and distribution of child pornography.
Jones was arrested in April 2011 as he arrived in Rhode Island on a bus. Police said Jones thought he was coming to the state to have sex with an 8-year-old girl.

Jones had been communicating with a man he thought was the girl’s father, but the man was actually an undercover agent.
Before sentencing, Jones told Judge William Smith, “I’ve been trying to carry myself with respect and integrity. What I’m accused of doing, I didn’t do.”
But Jones’s conversations with undercover agents were recorded.
Jones asked to stay at the Wyatt Detention Facility while he appeals, but the judge said that would be up to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Jones had already been convicted three times for having sex with minors.
