Private Detective Braken County Man Indicted on Abusing Disabled Sister

A Bracken County caregiver has been indicted on charges he beat and starved his mentally handicapped sister for several years.

Anthony Cottey is accused of abusing, neglecting, and stealing from his sister, Paula Cottey during a period from April 2010 until October 2012, while he lived with her at her home on Perkins Ridge Road.

“Her mother passed away and it was her mother’s wish that this brother be her guardian,” said Chief Deputy Bob Scott with the Bracken County Sheriff’s Department. “It was determined that her brother at times had been rough with her. Hit her or kicked her.”

According to an indictment handed down against Cottey late last week, the man had allegedly been violent, abusing his sister and “depriving her of food and (necessary) services,” like medical and dental care. He’s also accused of using her money to buy himself “a motorcycle valued in excess of $3,000.”

“There was a specific amount of money that was taken from her savings account and 2 or 3 days later that same amount of money was used to buy him a motorcycle,” said Chief Deputy Scott.

Cottey spent about a week in the Mason County Detention Center earlier this month, before bonding out on $5,000 cash. He was apparently living in a home just down the road from his sister. LEX 18 knocked on the home’s front door but no one answered.

Sheriff’s deputies said Anthony Cottey has been ordered to have no contact with his sister. Paula Cottey is said to be doing fine now.
