A former California state assemblyman has pleaded guilty to making fake identity theft claims to avoid paying his debts.
City News Service reports 47-year-old Carl Washington entered his plea to bank fraud charges on Monday. He’s scheduled to be sentenced June 3.
At least three financial institutions lost nearly $200,000 as a result of the scheme prosecutors say Washington ran from February 2007 to August 2011.

Washington applied for credit cards and loans, racking up thousands of dollars in charges, and then falsely reported he’d been a victim of identity theft while working in Los Angeles County’s probation office.
The Democrat represented the 52nd district in South Los Angeles from 1996 to 2002.
He is on unpaid leave from his job as the probation department’s director for intergovernmental relations.
