Wrongful Death Man Charged in Homeless Man Beating Death

A man charged with brutally killing a fellow homeless man earlier this month in Lexington made a court appearance in the case Friday.

The family of victim Tommy Crawford listened as disturbing new details about what allegedly happened in the incident were revealed in a Fayette County courtroom.

Early in the morning on a day in early June, Crawford was allegedly killed at the hands of Jimmy Alexander. “I just don’t understand it,” said Crawford’s mother, Dessie Lykins. “Why would somebody want to hurt somebody like that? He had a broken arm and his ribs were broke. I’m sure he didn’t fight back.”

In testimony Friday, detectives told the courtroom about how the beating of Crawford was brutally carried out with a 2×4. Detectives say the two got into it at a homeless camp off of Newtown Pike while both were allegedly drunk.

What could’ve been a serious squabble changed when police say Alexander killed Crawford to make sure he wasn’t charged with assault. “That doesn’t make any sense because he was going to get charged anyway,” said Lykins. “So, he didn’t have to kill my child.”

Police say Alexander has confessed to the crime in the past. In court Friday, he also plead guilty to alcohol intoxication.
