Wrongful Death Oldham County Woman Killed Boyfriend

An Oldham County woman said she killed her live-in boyfriend with a hatchet early Saturday, according to county police.

Gail G. Kelley, 51, was in custody following the incident in the 9200 block of Margaret Ann Court, located near Pewee Valley, Oldham County police said.

The cause of death for Michael T. Evans, 44, is yet to be determined by the Kentucky medical examiner’s office, police said.

Kelley told police she struck Evans in the head with the hatchet, according to a police news release. A neighbor said the couple had been fighting the day before.

Police said they received a call about a possible homicide at 5:30 a.m. When police arrived, the release said, they had to force their way into the home, where they found Evans dead with an apparent head injury.

Kelley was taken into custody without incident and formal charges are pending, police said. Police Chief Greg Smith said police were investigating what led up to the incident.

Dana Evola, who has rented the house next door for two years, said the couple often fought. She said Kelley told her “she was getting beat up” and was a victim of domestic abuse. Evola said she often saw bruises on her, and several times called police at Kelley’s request.

She said she believed that Evans was employed at an auto plant, and that Kelley stayed home. They had no children together and weren’t married, Evola said, but Kelley often played with Evola’s children.

“They were arguing all day yesterday,” said Evola, who sat on her front porch, a dozen yards from a police forensics truck parked in her neighbor’s driveway.
