Insurance Fraud Jacksonville, FL Man Gets 15 Years

A 46-year-old man receives 15 years in prison for a Jacksonville insurance fraud scheme. David Lopez is convicted on charges of schemes to defraud over $50,000, false insurance claims over $100,000, and knowingly participating in an intentional motor vehicle crash.

The investigation revealed that Lopez was the behind-the-scenes owner of Indian Rehabilitation Center, Inc., which was a licensed massage therapy clinic located in Jacksonville. It operated from March 2012 until October 2012 when the State Attorney’s Office and Florida’s Division of Insurance Fraud shutdown the clinic.

The clinic billed insurance companies in excess of $228,000.

According to a State Attorney’s press release, Lopez and four others staged an accident and later Lopez filed a Personal Injury Protection claim through IRCI. The clinic received $35,000 for treatment provided to Lopez and the other vehicle occupants.

Lopez was also found to have arranged for a straw owner of the clinic to be directed on how to fraudulently operate the clinic, which insurance companies to target and controlled IRCI’s bank accounts.

Investigators found Lopez hiding at a remote fish farm outside of Tampa, Florida, six months after the clinic was shutdown.
