Missing Person Police Search for Mercer County Man Who Escaped from Hart County Jail

Police are looking for a Mercer County man who escaped while serving time in a south-central Kentucky jail.

David Bruner escaped from custody in Hart County on Friday during work release and is accused of stealing a vehicle from the road department as part of his getaway.

The 47-year-old was serving time in the Hart County jail for receiving stolen property and fleeing and evading police out of Mercer and Boyle counties. They believe he stole a county truck found abandoned in Louisville over the weekend.

When chief deputy Scott Elder with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office was told of the escape, he wasn’t that surprised.

“He likes to steal; he’s a convicted burglar. Convicted of receiving stolen property multiple times,” Elder said. “He has fled from law enforcement.”

Surveillance video from 2004 shows Bruner throwing a rock through a Burgin convenience store window, then stealing the cash register.

He’d just been released from jail a couple months earlier for a similar crime.

Elder says Hart County contacted his office, so they could be on the lookout.

“Mr. Bruner is from here, his family is here. He’s been arrested here multiple times,” Elder said. “He could already be here and we not know it. So that’s why we want the public, if they know the whereabouts of Mr. Bruner, to call the Sheriff’s Office.”

David’s father, who lives in Mercer County, he hasn’t seen or heard from his son. He says if he did, he’d call police.
