Insurance Fraud IL Doctor Plans to Plead Guilty

An Illinois doctor plans to plead guilty to billing insurance companies for a surgical procedure that he claimed to have performed at two medical centers in Lake County but never did, according to court records.

Subir Maitra also will agree to have his case moved to federal court in Chicago, where he is charged in another case, records show.

Maitra was charged in June with six counts of health care fraud. Federal prosecutors alleged that he bused Illinois patients with good health insurance to Hind Hospital in Hobart and Lakeside Surgery in East Chicago to perform a cystometrogram, a surgery that inserts a catheter through the urethra into the bladder.

But Maitra never actually performed the surgery but billed the patients’ insurance companies for it, according to the government.

A plea agreement for Maitra has not been filed, but U.S. District Judge Rudy Lozano canceled his trial, which was set to start Monday in federal court in Hammond.

The Illinois case charges Maitra with three counts of paying a non-licensed physician in connection with his work at Sacred Heart Hospital in Chicago.
