A missing 12-year-old autistic girl from Leesburg was found dead in a pond Saturday morning, police said.
Beyonce Reddick went missing from her home about a block from Leesburg Regional Medical Center around 5:30 p.m. Friday, police said. Investigators don’t suspect foul play, Leesburg police Sgt. Scott Mack said.
The girl, who was known to wander and had the mental capacity of a younger child, had no verbal-communication skills, he said.
A family member spotted the girl while driving past the hospital Friday and contacted the girl’s mom asking whether she knew that her daughter had left home, Mack said. By the time the family member turned around to get Beyonce, she had disappeared, Mack said. The girl’s mother called police, who used a helicopter and police dog to look for the girl, Mack said.
The bloodhound helped police narrow the search to the area of the pond. The Lake County Sheriff’s Dive Team searched the pond and located the girl’s body at the bottom. Police notified the girl’s family, who identified the body as Beyonce’s. An investigation into the girl’s death is ongoing.
