Consumer investigator Jim Strickland has discovered a scam designed to pirate the insurance on expensive smartphones.
He took his evidence to investigators at the Insurance Commissioner’s Office.
“It’s not the first time I’ve heard about it hitting Georgia. However, it may be the first time we have some strong leads,” said investigations chief Sherry Mowell.

State agents will attempt to track down the people targeting cellphones such as the one owned by Debbie Buckland of Gwinnett County. Someone knew enough about her account to file a claim on her cellphone insurance. Insurance company Asurion sent a new phone for just the cost of a deductible. An imposter was at her house to meet FedEx.
“Just the fact that he’s been to my home really creeps me out,” said Buckland. State agents were eager to hear more about Buckland’s case. Twenty-four hours earlier Asurion tipped the insurance fraud unit to evidence of a widespread scheme in Georgia.
“Concerning a ring of individuals who have been perpetrating fraud receiving cellphones, said Mowell. Last year, California fraud agents arrested five suspects accused of pirating Asurion for 1,900 phones worth nearly $1 million.
