Wrongful Death Man Accused Of Killing Brother Pleads Not Guilty

A driver accused of hitting and killing his own brother in Lexington over the weekend pleaded not guilty in court Monday.

William Watkins is facing reckless homicide and DUI charges in connection with the death of his brother, Bryan Watkins.

Police say around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night, a black truck was driving down Woodview Drive when it hit 42-year-old Bryan Watkins. Court documents say the suspect claimed “the victim jumped in front of his vehicle” and he hit him. Officers described William as drunk and “belligerent”.

Family members of both men say the two brothers were very close and loved each other, but they got into a fight right before the accident happened.

LEX 18 has learned that the victim in this case, Bryan, is the same legally blind man cleared of charges last year in a deadly stabbing after a fight on Mark Avenue in Lexington.

A grand jury chose not to indict Bryan in the death of 22-year-old Steven Campbell, citing evidence of self defense. While Campbell’s family was never OK with that decision, Bryan’s family says he was not a violent man.

His sister-in-law says she wants Bryan to be remembered as a funny guy who loved his family and was trying to better his life through religion.

William Watkins didn’t want to speak from behind bars in the Fayette County Detention Center. He was appointed a public defender and is expected back in court on Nov. 5. His bond is set at $25,550.
