Wrongful Death Grandmother Charged with Baby’s Murder After Crash in Laurel County

Deputies in Laurel County charged a woman with murder after her granddaughter was killed in a crash Monday night.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s office said deputies arrested 46-year-old Melissa Worstell of London on December 1st just before midnight.

Worstell was arrested on Esquire Lane outside of London after deputies were sent to a single vehicle crash on Parker Road. When deputies arrived on scene, they determined that a 2005 Ford Mustang was traveling westbound on Parker Road when it ran off the shoulder, hit a culvert, overturned, and came to rest against a utility pole.

Investigators said Worstell tried to swallow part of a cigarette pack that had several pills inside. Deputies said Worstell told them she had taken neurotin and methadone earlier.

Investigators also said Worstell’s six month old granddaughter was killed because she had not been properly restrained.

Worstell was charged with murder, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, tampering with physical evidence, wanton endangerment, and other charges.

Worstell was taken to the Laurel County Detention Center.
