Identity Theft Man Posed As Mail Carrier to Steal Identities

The discovery of a cloned Colorado license plate led El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies to a man they say used a postal worker’s uniform to steal mail.

Jesse D. Williams was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of unlawful possession with intent, two counts of identity theft and first-degree criminal trespass.

The Sheriff’s Office says Williams created a fictitious license plate by filing an old one down and using stencils to copy a valid plate number onto the metal. The fake plate, copied from a 2014 black Dodge Challenger, was put on a stolen 2014 gray Dodge Challenger.

The car was reported stolen from an Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Englewood.

Deputies got a tip about the stolen vehicle and found it in the parking lot of the Village Inn on Garden of the Gods Road. Williams allegedly gave a false name and date of birth and showed a fake ID when he was arrested, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The stolen car contained evidence of making the fake license plates as well as a postal worker’s uniform and evidence he had been involved with identity theft cases in the Quail Lake Loop area, the Sheriff’s Office said. The Crime Reduction Unit alleges he posed as a postal employee to steal mail and people’s identities.

Williams is being held without bond. The unit is working with the U.S. Postal Service, the Colorado Springs Police Department and Denver law enforcement to find possible additional victims.
