Wrongful Death Juvenile Pleads Guilty in Duncan Park Shooting

A juvenile indicted in a shooting in Duncan Park pleaded guilty  in court Wednesday.

Daymion Sanders, pleaded guilty to second degree manslaughter in the 2014 shooting death of Antonio Franklin.

21-year-old Antonio Franklin Jr., better known as Tony among his friends, was shot in the head last April by a bullet that police say was meant for someone else.  Anita Franklin, Tony’s mother, says it’s a daily struggle to live with the loss of her son.

Sanders was sentenced to 7 years where he will serve 5.5 months in the Department of Juvenile Justice. After Sanders turns 18, he will be brought back to court and sentenced as an adult.

Three other suspects, Bryan Brown, Nasheim Tarieek Dixon and William Dixon, were also indicted back in November 2014.  Nashiem Dixon was involved in another incident in February where police say his friends were shooting into houses and was re-arrested for violating the conditions of his release.

So that Antonio’s death will not be in vain, Anita is dedicating her life to helping youth in Lexington, starting with the place where her own child was killed. On April 25, there will be a resource fair for parents in Duncan Park to let them know what opportunities are available for summer programs. Franklin hopes that more community involvement will lead to less youth violence.
